Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

Created by Dahvi Waller, Mrs. America premiered on FX on Hulu (now separate entities once again) in 2020. The limited series wove together stories of different types of women, with different types of power, working together in support of the Equal Rights Amendment — and against it. So it’s not surprising that people were wary of watching it in 2020, a year in which, thanks to the Trump administration and Covid-19 pandemic, the many fissures in our society only deepened. Watching the show feels like being witness to the kind of historical progressive failure we felt like we were already living through in 2020, and it was understandably too hard to bear for some viewers.

One of the scenes that Uzo Aduba felt was particularly powerful in “Mrs. America,” which was cut for time, involved Rep. Shirley Chisholm going to the hospital to visit Gov. George Wallace (Alabama) after an assassination attempt. For Aduba the scene was incredible for a number of reasons. “It was very powerful thinking about Shirley saying in that moment, things that he had to stay there and hear. Here is an opportunity for her to speak on her truth,” explained Aduba in our recent webchat (watch the video above). But there was one specific line that Tanya Barfield had written for Shirley that Aduba found absolutely incredible. “She would say in that scene that she didn’t know there was anything wrong being black until she came back to America. My mom used to say that. It’s literally as if she sat and interviewed my mother.”

Writing an episode of “Mrs. America” like “Shirley,” didn’t just feel historic for Tanya Barfield because of the subject matter being depicted. Barfield felt a great amount of pride in the episode centering on a Black woman and also being written and directed by Black women. “It was like a trifecta of Black women involved in this. We have Uzo Aduba, who’s sublime; Ama, who brought such vision and sensitivity and me writing it. I think we all felt like this is the experience of a lifetime,” says Barfield in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Barfield also gives credit to showrunner Dahvi Waller for letting her write the episode. “It’s the proudest and most humbling moment of my career.”

The cast and creators of the FX on Hulu limited series “Mrs. America” sought to bring the ’70s feminist movement and the fight surrounding the Equal Rights Amendment to the screen through exploring the personal motivations of its key players.
Now with 10 Emmy nominations, the show has struck a chord by revealing little-known truths about the women on both sides of the argument, including Phyllis Schlafly, Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, Jill Ruckelshaus, Brenda Feigen, Bella Abzug and Betty Friedan.
After a screening of the series’ third episode, “Shirley,” Variety‘s Kate Aurthur discussed the importance of portraying these figures with accuracy and empathy with executive producer Cate Blanchett, who played Schlafly; creator, showrunner and executive producer Dahvi Waller; producer Tanya Barfield, who wrote the episode; Margo Martindale, who played Abzug; Uzo Aduba, who played Chisholm and Tracey Ullman, who played Friedan. When Margo Martindale started preparing to play former Rep. Bella Abzug on “Mrs. America,” she easily found herself admiring certain qualities of who Abzug was. “She was extremely smart and extremely fast-thinking. I’m a very reflective thinker. She thinks on the word and she knows what she’s saying. Me, I could say the wrong thing,” explains Martindale in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Abzug was a figure that Martindale was familiar with from when she first moved to New York City but getting to play her gave her opened up an entirely new perspective to the congresswoman. She also feels that a lot of people might mistake the qualities she highlights in Abzug’s character for her own. “She was almost the opposite of me, even though people think of me that way. I’m so not.”

While splitting up the episodes of “Mrs. America” among three film editors might seem like something that could create confusion, Robert Komatsu says that the arrangement was actually very beneficial for all involved. “It was great because you have two partners that you can collaborate with. We would screen episodes for each other and comment on each other’s work,” says Komatsu in our recent webchat (watch the video above). One specific example he gave was how he and Emily Greene worked back and forth with each other in order to create the large titles that would display during an episode. “We both tried it in our rooms and she said, ‘I made it pretty big.’ Then we went into my room and mine took up the whole frame and she liked it.”

One of the best examples of how Hollywood is moving toward being a place for more inclusive storytelling might be this year’s limited series Emmy race. All five of the nominees in that category tell stories about female characters; most specifically concentrating on depictions of women who have traditionally been marginalized both on and off screen.
“Unbelievable” showrunner Susannah Grant sums it up by saying that “it’s great to see stories of people who have historically been voiceless getting such a big platform.”

“Run,” a Lionsgate horror thriller starring Sarah Paulson that was supposed to be released in movie theaters on May 8 in time for Mother’s Day, will now be shown on streaming site Hulu instead. No start date right now, but the scary movie will also be released in select theaters overseas.
The title was pulled from the studio’s release schedule in mid-March in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, when many film release dates were pushed back or switched to becoming a VOD offering or premiering on a streaming site. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there was no lack of suitors for the chiller directed by Aneesh Chaganty. That might be partly because the all-too-relatable sheltering-in-place theme of the movie is about teen girl (newcomer Kiera Allen) who has been raised in total isolation while relying on a wheelchair. The stars and team of Mrs. America said their time spent on the newly Emmy-nominated Hulu/FX show encouraged them to redefine what it means to be a feminist and activist.
“I used to think change was this march forward and that it was linear and we kept moving ahead. But learning about the anti-feminists and the stop the Era movement, I just realized how cyclical change is,” series creator Dahvi Waller said at PaleyFest Los Angeles on Friday.
Waller, Mrs. America stars Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba and Sarah Paulson, spoke with ABC’s Martha Raddatz about the long-enduring legacy of 1960s feminists and the behind-the-scenes work that helped the actresses nail down their characters. Also joining Friday’s panel were Margo Martindale, Ari Gaynor, John Slattery and executive producers Stacy Sher, Ryan Fleck and Coco Francini.

“‘Ratched’ is done and in the can and comes out in September,” Sarah Paulson reveals to Gold Derby about her highly anticipated Netflix series in which she takes on the villainous role of Nurse Mildred Ratched. The show is based on Ken Kesey‘s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” a novel that also served as the basis for the five-time Oscar-wining 1975 film in which Louise Fletcher portrayed the iconic nurse. “Mrs. America” tells a true story of feminist history from both sides of the political divide. Dahvi Waller says she felt like she was rolling a massive boulder up a hill when she started her research for the FX on Hulu limited series “Mrs. America.”
She had to figure out how she was going to tell the politically, racially and socially complex story of the Equal Rights Amendment and the women who fought both for and against it — over almost a decade.
And Waller was far from the only writer who had to contend with this problem, as a large chunk of the season’s biggest limited series and TV movies, including Showtime’s “The Loudest Voice,” Netflix’s “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Versatile and timeless, composer Kris Bowers is one the most efficient and effective musical storytellers working in television. In recent years, Bowers quickly amassed a multifaceted body of work that’s distinct for how it effortlessly weaves a variety of different musical styles with complex characters and themes. For top TV creators revisiting the past because of the ongoing resonance of those stories, Bowers bridges the time gap with music that captures a specific time and place by melding sounds of the past and present. Drawing from both, he honors each. It’s the key difference between simply matching a recognizable sound and evoking a genuine feeling. His music for “Mrs. America,” the FX on Hulu show that documents the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, doesn’t feel constricted by needing to mimic 1978. Instead of copying the pop sounds of the time, his score is made up of a number of gentler,...

Alice is the lone central character that is not based on an iconic woman in American history, so there wasn’t source material to which Paulson could turn to get a deeper understanding of the woman described as a homemaker and loyal friend of Phyllis Schlafly (Cate Blanchett), fighting against ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment. But, she was an essential part of the story because she was the only character who could change her stance on the movement over the course of the series.
That’s where the relationship between Paulson and showrunner Dahvi Waller became so crucial.
As Paulson recalls it, Waller told her she couldn’t make a promise that Alice was going to be as prominent...

OTTThe show, created by Dahvi Waller and streaming on Hotstar, follows two factions of women during the 1970s women’s liberation movement. Nikhita VenugopalFacebookAbout halfway through the nine-episode miniseries Mrs. America, there’s a callout to the late Nora Ephron. The journalist-turned-film director had written about the women’s liberation movement for Esquire in the 1970s, and naturally, I began searching for her famous essay, which follows the Democratic Convention and the storied figures connected to the National Women’s Political Caucus. There’s activist Gloria Steinam and former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, having their pictures taken at every turn, and Betty Friedan, who authored the seminal book The Feminine Mystique, her eyes “darting back and forth trying to catch someone’s attention, anyone’s attention. No use.” As Friedan says in the show, “Nora doesn’t need convincing to write something bitchy.” But it’s also a testament to show...

Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven,” the disco-fied 1976 reinvention of the composer’s most famous symphony, seems like an unusual choice for the theme of “Mrs. America,” FX’s Cate Blanchett-starring series on the history of the 1970s women’s movement as seen from the perspective of its fervent opponent, arch-conservative Phyllis Schlafly. The song dates from late in the show’s chronology, its glitzy groove seems at odds with many of the characters, and most of all, it’s an instrumental.
But for the show’s music supervisor, Mary Ramos — who has worked on dozens of films and television shows, most prominently on several Quentin Tarantino films, including last year’s Oscar-winning “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” as well as Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere” — it’s a perfect choice.

Amma Asante’s task in directing two episodes of the FX limited series, “Mrs. America,” was a monumental one. Directing the third episode, “Shirley,” was a challenge in having to recreate the 1972 Democratic National Convention but the following episode, where Phyllis Schlafly and Betty Friedan debate each other, was just as challenging. “It was so important to convey the dynamic between Betty and Phyllis but also Betty, Phyllis and the audience of students that were there at the time and their reaction to each of the women,” she tells us in our recent webchat (watch the video above). Both Asante and showrunner, Dahvi Waller, discussed how to frame it and decided to use sports as a frame of reference. “Dahvi and I talked and this idea of it being like a tennis match and who was going to win each round and at what point the whole balance kind of changes and things turn around.

Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” was released in 1976 and it’s the perfect disco anthem for FX on Hulu’s “Mrs. America.”
“It’s smart, classical and not too serious,” says Carol Wong, executive producer at yU+co, the design company behind the show’s main title sequence.
“Mrs. America,” which comes from creator and showrunner Dahvi Waller, depicts the movement to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s — and the women who fought for and against that amendment, from Phyllis Schlafly to Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan. While that is certainly serious subject matter, the way the song builds to a great crescendo is reminiscent of the actions these women are taking in the nine-episode limited series.
Drawn to the “fun, energetic vibe” of “A Fifth of Beethoven,” Wong initially plan to use it and the main titles in general to showcase all of the women depicted in the series.

Rose Byrne is quarantining in New York City with her husband Bobby Cannavale and their two kids. “Listen, I feel lucky,” Byrne says on Friday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “We’re safe and we’re okay, but it’s scary. We have two little kids. We’ve just been inside, but I have friends who are working in the healthcare system.”
But then in true Byrne comedic fashion, she doesn’t miss a beat when asked how she’s staying sane at home. “Just alcohol, drugs [and] porn,” she cracked.
Byrne is currently starring as Gloria Steinem opposite Cate Blanchett as conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly in “Mrs. America,” Dahvi Waller’s FX on Hulu series about the fight to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s and 1980s. “I was like, ‘I cannot screw this up,’” Byrne said. “I just worked as hard as I could,...
