In Rodney Ascher’s new film Room 237, we hear from people who have developed far-reaching theories and believe they have decoded the hidden symbols and messages buried in the late director’s film. Stanley Kubrick is one of the all time great filmmakers. 2001: Space Odyssey and the subject of analysis here, The Shining, are regarded as works of art. In Room 237, viewer interpretations are taken to such extremes that in reference to any other filmmaker besides Kubrick, some of the theories passed in this film would be deemed preposterous without hesitation.
However, because the focus is on such an esteemed auteur, you’ll find yourself nodding in concurrence as if the veil covering your eyes were suddenly pulled. Room 237 is an example of art being seen from the eye of the beholder.
Interpretation is an open book and the introduction of Room 237 displays those many chapters in the form of the proposed theories of explanation. Rodney Ashcer directs in the shadows, offering a stream of ideas without much interaction with the different speakers. Ashcer regards everything as fact and...

The Stanley Film Festival, which will host its debut fest at the iconic and legendary Stanley Hotel in Colorado from May 2-5, has announced its official feature film line-up, with the Eli Roth-starring earthquake thriller Aftershock taking center stage as the fest’s closing night film.
Roth will be on hand to accept the Inaugural Visionary Award and take part in a Q&A after the film.

Here's the kind of theory that the five interviewees in Rodney Ascher's Room 237 have come up with about Stanley Kubrick's The Shining: One believes that it's an allegory about the genocide of Native Americans. Another that it's instead about the Holocaust. Or that it's Kubrick's coded confession that he faked the moon landing. A number of appealing cinematic treats open this weekend. Derek Cianfrance's crime saga "The Place Beyond the Pines," starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes, is receiving solid critical praise, while Rodney Ascher's documentary "Room 237," examining the wonkiest wonks' theories about Kubrick's "The Shining," is being roundly lauded (Toh! has a love-hate relationship with the film). The documentary "Room 237" is not only a fascinating look at Stanley Kubrick's 1980 masterpiece "The Shining," but an examination of how we see and interpret movies and the often bizarre levels to which we obsess about them. The theories discussed in the film come from five people -- Bill Blakemore, Jay Weidner, Geoffrey Cocks, Juli Kearns, John Fell Ryan -- heavy thinkers and ordinary movie fans who try to prove that the movie is really about the massacre of Native Americans, the Holocaust, or a faked moon landing. Room 237 is a potent, one-of-a-kind exploration into obsession and fanaticism that calls into question the underlying value of art and those who seek to unearth it. Whether or not you’re a fan of Kubrick and his films is moot. Rodney Ascher’s documentary serves up mind-boggling theory after another, absorbing the viewer into a bubble of references and theories surrounding Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining. Broken into nine sections, Room 237 is chalk-full of altered images, stock footage, and snippets from the rest of Kubrick’s oeuvre. Its structure and cohesiveness very much plays like a thrown together college assignment on the auteur, but with enough ideas to keep us entertained, and even enthralled throughout its duration.
The film follows a group of contributors (never actually seen in the film), each of whom believe they have a firm grasp on what Kubrick was really doing.

At this year’s Sundance film festival there was one film that stuck out as anomaly of a new kind of documentary that re-examines the very essence of film critique. Rodney Ascher’s Room 237 is a study of Stanley Kubrick’s much beloved horror film The Shining, dissected by a series of obsessive fans of the film who have seemingly uncovered a laundry list of potential revelatory theories that put the film in a new light. Room 237 is playing in the Directors Fortnight here in Cannes, and I was fortunate enough to sit down one-on-one with the film’s director Rodney Ascher and producer Tim Kirk as they discuss new theories they’ve heard since premiering the film, other fascinating stories about other Kubrick films and how the film has slightly changed since premiering at Sundance.

If you’re the sort of person who loves conspiracy theories, hidden meanings, codes, ciphers, clues, and other mysteries that bear unraveling, then Room 237 is right up your alley. Director Rodney Ascher has put together a fascinating movie that will most likely change the way you watch Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining forever, or will at least make you search out some of the things that are discussed in this documentary. On Tuesday night, the top brass from CNN tossed Erin quite a lovely pre-debut gala at Robert restaurant on Columbus Circle that was so packed with important peeps that it was almost frightening. My favorite moment: talking to Daily News publisher Mort Zuckerman and journalist Judith Miller, when all of a sudden a man arrived bringing Zuckerman a glass of liquid refreshment from the bar. It was none other than Jp Morgan chief Jamie Dimon, who’d volunteered to snake through the packed room and return with beverages. How incredibly helpful!
