Where to Watch “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal”: HBO Max (the show originally aired on Adult Swim)
There’s nothing on TV that will rattle your insides quite like the victory roars in “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal.” They come from a prehistoric man, Spear (voiced by Aaron Laplante), his unexpected dinosaur companion, Fang, or any of the handful of vicious predators that the two encounter on their travels across a pre-civilization Earth.
The Emmy-winning animated series doesn’t need much more of a premise than that. As Spear and Fang fend off their attackers, they also gradually shed their animus toward each other. In 20-minute episodes, the pair alternate between working together and saving each other from an increasingly complex hoard of creatures also doing what they need to survive. “Primal” is the perfect word for it, an ongoing battle of strength and wits...

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

Piece by piece, we’re gradually beginning to form a clear picture of Toonami’s new Samurai Jack series, thanks in large part to the string of behind-the-scenes videos coming out of Adult Swim.
That latest of which features a discussion with Genndy Tartakovsky – series creator, director and really the brains behind the iconic, visually astute series – along with the show’s principal writing team. Embedded below, Samurai Jack‘s key contributors touch base on the timeline, and why they consider the imminent revival to be darker in tone to what has come before.
First up, scribe Darrick Bachman warned fans that they’re about to see a whole new side of the nimble Jack, replete with beard and world-weary attitude.
“I think we’re going to see [Jack] in a new light because we’e going to see him from a different standpoint,” writer said. “In the original series he...

The 42nd Annual Annie Awards were handed out on a busy Saturday night in the awards world and "How To Train Your Dragon 2" was the big winner. The DreamWorks Animation blockbuster (it's true) took home six Annies including Best Animated Feature and Directing (Dean DeBlois). While the entire Academy votes on the Best Animated Feature category, this endorsement from the animation community can't hurt in a very competitive year. Other big winners included "The Simpsons," Amazon's "Tumble Leaf" and Oscar frontrunner "Feast" for the Best Animated Short Subject honor. "The Boxtrolls'" Sir Ben Kingsley took home the award for Voice Acting in an Animated Feature Production and Phil Lord and Christoper Miller won for Writing in an Animated Feature for "The Lego Movie." A complete list of this year's honorees is as follows: Best Animated Feature "How to Train Your Dragon 2," DreamWorks Animation Directing in an Animated Feature Production Dean DeBlois,...
