The Monday, April 22 live episode of “American Idol” Season 22 proved to be the end of the road for two fan-fave singers: Jayna Elise and Roman Collins. They were the only artists in the Top 12 that failed to earn enough votes from viewers to make it into next week’s all-important Top 10. Host Ryan Seacrest delivered the unfortunate news in front of judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. The guest mentor for “Billboard #1 Hits” night was Meghan Trainor.
Throughout the competition, Jayna sang tunes like “The Climb” (Auditions round), “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” (Showstopper round), “Confident” (Top 24 round), “My All”, “All I Wanted”, “I Have Nothing” (Top 14 round) and “Diamonds” (Top 12 round). The 22-year-old performer from Washington, D.C. actually began her journey last year on “Idol,” but was eliminated prior to the Season 21 live shows. The good news is that she made it much further this time around.

The Top 14 were revealed in a live two-hour broadcast of “American Idol” Monday night. Host Ryan Seacrest called the Top 20 to the stage, one-by-one, telling them if America had voted them through or they’d have to be saved by judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Each contestant sang regardless of the results, and in our recent poll viewers named Abi Carter the best of the night. Watch her stirring rendition of “My Mind” by Yebba above.
By the end of the evening Ajii, Odell Benton Jr., Jennifer Jeffries, Kennedy Reid, Mackenzie Sol and Quintavious were eliminated from the competition. The judges saved Jordan Anthony, Roman Collins, Jayna Elise and Nya, allowing them to move forward in the competition. They round out the Top 14 who will sing for America’s votes on “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Night” on Sunday, April 21. Kiss frontman Gene Simmons will mentor the finalists.

American Idol fans have been less than impressed with some of the decisions the judges have made so far in Season 22. Choosing Kayko over Abby Blake to move into the Top 24 had fans heated. Then, when the judges decided to axe American Idol hopeful Ziggy Krassenberg, viewers were up in arms once again. Now, they think the judges were too critical of another fan favorite. Here’s what they are saying.
Julia Gagnon Landed A Platinum Ticket
Like many of the other contestants on American Idol, Julia Gagnon auditioned in Nashville. She sang “Ain’t No Way” by Aretha Franklin. After some consideration, the judges decided to give her a coveted Platinum Ticket, which allowed her to bypass Idol Arena.
She performed alongside the other two Platinum Ticket winners, Abi Carter and Odell Bunton Jr. during the Idol Arena episode. They sang a stunning rendition of “California Dreamin'” by the Mamas and the Papas.

American Idol kicked off its Top 24 week on Sunday night (April 7), but some viewers think Katy Perry is playing favorites. The episode took place at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii, where the remaining Season 22 hopefuls performed on the beachfront stage, hoping to impress the judges and move on to the live shows. However, some fans criticized Perry for seemingly showing bias towards Abi Carter, the 21-year-old recent college graduate from Indio, California. The judges previously awarded Carter a Platinum Ticket after her soulful rendition of Billie Eilish‘s “What Was I Made For?”; the ticket allowed her to skip the first round of Hollywood Week. On Sunday’s episode, Carter wowed the judges again with an energetic performance of Hillsong United’s “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail),” receiving an immense reaction from the crowd. “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say it, but you’re my favorite,...

“American Idol” judge Katy Perry isn’t worried about showing favoritism on what is potentially her last season on the ABC reality TV singing competition. During Sunday night’s episode, the “Firework” singer let it be known that she hopes Abi Carter goes all the way on Season 22. The 21-year-old Platinum Ticket winner sang “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillside United for her Top 24 performance, earning a standing ovation from the judges.
“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say it, but you’re my favorite,” Katy said while shrugging her shoulders. “I just think you are so gifted. When you first came to us you sang a Billie Eilish song and it was just like, oh my gosh, you can do a Hillside song? This is our third time hearing you sing. The second time you could barely make a note out. So, really this is...

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for American Idol.] The 56 selected from”Hollywood Week” hoped to keep their American Idol dreams alive during the “Showstopper” round and first Monday show of the season. This field included platinum holders Julia Gagnon, Odell Bunton Jr., and Abi Carter. Each had to work the room and audience to impress the judges. Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie had their work cut out for them as they made their “Final Judgment” who made up the Top 24. So much in fact, the panel needed to host a sing-off twice in the decision room. In the end, the two dozen who survived next head to Disney’s Aulani Resor Resort in Hawaii where they’ll take the stage for America’s vote. They will be mentored by Tori Kelly and Jelly Roll. [Warning: The below contains spoilers for American Idol.] Tensions and stakes ran high as the grueling “Hollywood Week” got underway on American Idol Sunday. This time around finalists had to enter the “Idol Arena,” or as judge Lionel Richie calls it, the gladiator’s pit. The intimate setup had the 143 hopefuls sitting surrounding the stage where they could fully see, hear, and experience their competition. Judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel called each singer on the spot not knowing the order. They’d have one round and one shot to impress the judges. Host Ryan Seacrest pushed throughout the evening that this would be the biggest cut in Idol history with only 56 ultimately going through to the “Showstopper” round. If this wasn’t enough, the hopefuls also had witnessed Platinum Ticket holders Julia Gagnon, Odell Bunton Jr., and Abi Carter perform and show why they got to skip to the first round. Talk about a mind you know what.

The grueling gauntlet that is American Idol‘s “Hollywood Week” is imminent: A strenuous, ruthless vocal boot camp that immediately follows the euphoria of getting a golden ticket and making it out of auditions.
That’s what’s in store for most contestants, but not all. Three somewhat lucky — but mostly supremely talented — singers were given coveted platinum tickets, giving them a pass through the first round of “Hollywood Week.” But so they’re keeping those vocal cords nice and warm, American Idol enlisted platinum ticket recipients Abi Carter, Julia Gagnon,...

In 2022 “American Idol” introduced fans to the Platinum Ticket, an upgraded form of the golden ticket that allows the season’s most promising contestants to skip the first round of Hollywood Week after giving a stellar audition. It may sound like judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie favor those contestants, but how big of an advantage is the Platinum Ticket?
In Season 20 the recipients were HunterGirl, Kenedi Anderson and Jay. In this case the judges forecast one finalist in HunterGirl, who went on to become the runner-up to Noah Thompson. After her Top 24 performance of “Human,” Kenedi withdrew from the competition for personal reasons. Later that season Jay finished in the Top 7, but was eliminated after well-received performances of “I Have Nothing” and “A Song for Mama.”
