Epic fantasy has been a popular genre in the movies for nearly a century. Classics like "The Wizard of Oz," "Jason and the Argonauts," and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" attracted hordes of moviegoers; they also won awards and drew rave reviews from critics. But not every fantasy film gets two thumbs up. For every "The Lord of the Rings," there's a "Hobbit"; for every "Labyrinth," an "Eragon."
And yet, some of these films might make you sit up and cheer anyway. It's not just the swords and sorcery that make them fun; it's the diverse and complex characters, the bizarre and creative creatures, and the wild and innovative settings. Many fantasy films were lambasted by reviewers when they were released, but if you sit down to watch them today, you'll have a fantastic time.
Don't believe me? These 14 epic fantasy movies were panned by professional commentators, but they're still a blast to watch.

Director Matthew Vaughn ("Kick-Ass") continues developing a sex/violence update of "Flash Gordon", based on the 1930's newspaper comic strip space hero by Alex Raymond, that inspired the creation of "Star Wars" by George Lucas:

If you are a movie geek, just knowing that a movie is produced by Dino De Laurentiis is a sign that the movie is usually worth your attention. Flash Gordon though is also a film that doesn’t just need that association, it instead stands on its own; and while it may not be Star Wars, it definitely has a place in the hearts of science fiction fans.
Finding himself kidnapped by Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol), Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) and friend Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) find themselves travelling to the planed Mongo. Flash Gordon still stands alone in the pantheon of comic book movies 40 years on. Colorful, vibrant, kinky, and often absurd, Mike Hodges’ gaudy tale of an all-American boy defeating a powerful villain from space and saving the Earth in the process had until recently felt far removed from the predominantly safe and CG-heavy comic book fare of the last few decades, despite its familiar themes and due in large part to its distinct refusal to take itself seriously. But the film we know and love is a world away from how it began.
Back in the 1970s, wealthy businessman and film producer Dino De Laurentiis held on to the Flash Gordon rights after George Lucas’ attempts to extricate them. A much-less-minted Lucas was forced to make his own space adventure movie instead, a little project called Star Wars. Its success indisputable, De Laurentiis was more determined than ever to make...

With echoes of The Wizard of Oz and Carry On movies, Mike Hodges’ vintage intergalactic fable delivers mayhem, madness and eye-frazzling colour
‘This place is a lunatic asylum!” says the square-jawed, peroxide-blond hero of Mike Hodges’ bizarre LSD pantomime Flash Gordon, adapted by Lorenzo Semple Jr and Michael Allin from the 1930s comic-strip serial – now rereleased on streaming platforms for its 40th anniversary. It now looks even madder and more expressionist than ever, with an operatic theme from Queen, bizarre 2D studio sets for alien planets and the kind of eyeball-frazzling colour scheme that generally only existed on old TVs of the era before you had to thump them.
Sam J Jones plays the Earthling American football star Flash Gordon who finds himself caught up in an intergalactic war when the evil Ming the Merciless launches an attack on Planet Earth. Swept along for this titanic battle is comely Dale Arden...

“Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi has signed onto “Flash Gordon,” as an animated feature film project from Disney-Fox. It is not known yet whether he will write, direct, or both. Deadline first broke the news.
Waititi is currently in post-production on his sure-to-be-controversial Adolf Hitler satire “Jojo Rabbit,” adapted from the novel by Christine Leunens. The story follows a Hitler youth who discovers his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic, prompting him to address his nationalistic ideals through his friendship with an imaginary Hitler, played by Waititi. Starring Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson, the Fox Searchlight dark comedy hits theaters on October 18.
Last fall, Deadline reported that Fox had hired “Overlord” director Julius Avery to write and direct a “Flash Gordon” movie, after having previously negotiated in 2015 with “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn. That was before the Disney-Fox merger, however, and the project now...

Deadline says that Waititi is signing on to write and direct the film, but at this point his reps are saying that “it’s too early to gauge exactly what his role would be.” But, this is a project that he is helping develop and I would love it if he actually came on board to write and direct it!

That is right, the 80’s are heading to Scotland for Comic Con Scotland and into the heart of its capital city Edinburgh for Monopoly Events convention For The Love of 80s, and they are bringing some of the biggest if not the biggest talents of Film, TV and even some sports faces you will be able to lose your nostalgic mind to.
Here is the best part. Myself (Kevin – the talent) and my co-host Chris (the Scottish one) are making our way up to do some coverage of this awesome event. I mean, when we saw some of the names that were going to be only 40 minutes away from our sleepy little hermit town, it seemed rude of us not to attend this event. So if you are heading there keep an eye out for us, as we would love to chat to people who are fans of all things the 80’s had to offer.

20th Century Fox is moving forward with their Flash Gordon movie and they hired Overlord director Julius Avery to helm it! Obviously the studio likes what he did with Overlord, which has yet to be released in theaters, but it looks bat-shit crazy!

Flash Gordon was created in 1934 by iconic artist Alex Raymond, and the story follows Dale Arden and the mad scientist Hans Zasrkov, as they end up on the planet Mongo fighting a tyrannical ruler named Ming the Merciless.

"Science Fiction Double Feature" from The Rocky Horror Picture Show references lots of movies. We unpack it all...
I have watched, well, not exactly watched, but experienced The Rocky Horror Picture Show over 100 times. I’ve only watched it about 30 times. I saw it in the movies and on HBO about five times before I couldn’t take it anymore and troweled makeup on, ripped up some fishnet stockings and took to a stage myself. Figured I was a natch, had the same hair as Tim Curry and did his voice in a passable mimic, not that I'd need it.
I performed in a Friday night cast 72 times from when I was 15 to when I was 17. I started as Dr. Frank N. Furter and when I was replaced by a woman in lingerie, as opposed to a guy in drag, I played Janet for a while. The...
Columbia might be rocketing a redo-update of "Flash Gordon", entering talks to acquire the film rights for a big-screen adaptation that has Breck Eisner attached to direct and Neal Moritz set to produce. Eisner also will exec produce.
"Flash" originally was a science fiction newspaper comic strip drawn by Alex Raymond in the 1930s and was created to compete with another sci-fi strip, "Buck Rogers". "Flash" was first adapted to the screen via Buster Crabbe serials and was made into a lavish 1980 film starring Sam Jones but remembered more for its Queen score. More recently, it was a Sci Fi Channel miniseries that was seen as a critical and ratings failure.
Storywise, Flash was an athlete who travels to the planet Mongo with his lady love, Dale Arden, and the mad scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. There, they discover a world ruled by Ming the Merciless and meet such strange inhabitants as the Hawkmen and the Sharkmen.
No writers are on board to adapt.
