The return of a master of the genre, they said. Maybe the erotic thriller isn’t dead after all, they said. Never mind that the release of the Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas thriller Deep Water — director Adrian Lyne’s first movie since Unfaithful 20 years ago — was repeatedly delayed. This wasn’t necessarily a bad omen, the reality of pandemic-era moviegoing being what it is. Even the fact of the movie’s same-day release in theaters and on Hulu feels appropriate. Erotic thrillers in their heyday were, after all,...

The erotic thriller genre is back with “Deep Water,” which is now streaming on Hulu. The 20th Century Studios film was originally set for a theatrical release, but after multiple delays it was shifted to a streaming-only release.
Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, the film follows a married couple who have fallen out of love. The wife, Melinda, flaunts her extramarital liaisons in front of her husband, but when more than one of her lovers turns up missing, the question becomes whether her husband is just jealous or if he’s a straight-up murderer.
“Deep Water” marks the first directorial effort from “Fatal Attraction” helmer Adrian Lyne since 2002’s “Unfaithful,” and boasts a screenplay co-written by “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson and Zach Helm.

The tale of Deep Water’s production and release could have easily overshadowed the film itself. Marking the return of Adrian Lyne to the director’s chair after a 20-year absence since 2002’s Unfaithful, the erotic thriller was the catalyst for offscreen romance between stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. The tabloid fodder of their relationship exploded to the next level in their well-documented break-up, and the film’s constant delays from Covid and Disney’s treatment of its 20th Century Studios titles ultimately led to the film being awkwardly released now, about a year since the duo broke up. While surrounding factors behind Deep Water have long been meme material ready for the piranhas to pounce on once it hit release, the reality is that Lyne—a defining filmmaker in halcyon days of the erotic thriller in the ‘80s and early ‘90s—has crafted a welcome return to a genre long needing resurgence.

Patricia Highsmith’s “Deep Water” is a 1957 novel about a smart man in a soured marriage who grows so mad with jealousy over the affairs that his wife keeps flaunting in front of his face — and so resentful toward the reliable boorishness of her lovers — that he starts murdering her boy-toys with the same brazenness that she took them into her bed. In 1972, the ads for the late Peter Bogdanovich’s hilarious throwback “What’s Up, Doc?” promised, “It’s a screwball comedy. Remember those?” If Disney weren’t consigning “Deep Water” to its Hulu streaming service — the fate for most upcoming titles from the 20th Century and Searchlight shingles — they might well have posters that tease, “It’s an erotic thriller. Remember them?”
And who better to save Hollywood cinema from chaste franchises, stolid superheroes, and a general lack of horniness than director Adrian Lyne, returned from a two-decade hiatus to bring heavy breathing back to mainstream movies.
“Deep Water,” a Patricia Highsmith adaptation starring couple-at-the-time Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, doesn’t invoke the beads of sweat that the genre’s best can manage, but it’s a pleasurably trashy reminder of the flashy fun that Lyne and his many imitators once regularly brought to the screen.

Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas Navigate Sex, Infidelity and Murder in New ‘Deep Water’ Trailer (Video)
The official trailer for the new psychological thriller “Deep Water” has arrived, in which Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas play a married couple with some serious troubles.
The 20th Century Studios film is based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith and hails from “Indecent Proposal,” “Fatal Attraction” and “9 1/2 Weeks” director Adrian Lyne. Affleck plays Vic, a husband who is becoming increasingly perturbed by his wife’s open philandering, while de Armas plays Vic’s flirtatious and cunning wife Melinda. Things take a bloody turn at a party when a body turns up in the pool.
The film boasts a screenplay by Zach Helm (“Stranger Than Fiction”) and “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson.
“Deep Water” was a bit in limbo after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, as the film was shot back in 2019 and its seriously R-rated nature is not exactly befitting a streaming service like Disney+.

Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas are in negotiations to star in the erotic thriller “Deep Water” with Adrian Lyne directing and New Regency fully financing.
If the deals are signed, production would start in November with a release through New Regency’s deal with Fox. Zach Helm and Sam Levinson wrote the script, which is based on a 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. The story follows a small-town couple in a loveless marriage in which the wife is allowed to take lovers as long as she does not desert the family. However, complications arise when the husband takes credit for the unsolved murder of one of the former lovers.
New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Garrett Basch and Steven Zaillian are producing with Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady and Ben Forkner. Lyne set up the project at Fox 2000 in 2013 and New Regency bought control of it last year.

English filmmaker Adrian Lyne is in talks to return to directing for his first film since 2002’s Academy Award-nominated “Unfaithful.” According to Deadline, the master of the psychosexual nail-biter is looking at a November production start date for “Deep Water,” set to star Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas.
Oscar-nominated for Best Director for 1987’s erotic shocker “Fatal Attraction,” Lyne will be back in his wheelhouse for “Deep Water,” a sexy thriller adapted by Zach Helm (“Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium”) and Sam Levinson (HBO’s “Euphoria”) from a novel by psychological suspense connoisseur Patricia Highsmith.
The story centers on married couple Vic and Melinda, whose open marriage is tested by an unsolved murder that resurfaces from Melinda’s past. In Highsmith tradition, the novel concerns itself more deeply with plunging beneath the illusory veneer of picture-perfect, midcentury American life. John Malkovich has acted in 98 films and is about to make his London directorial debut with Zach Helm’s Good Canary, a play about success, secrets and addiction. He has directed the play in Mexico and in France, where it won Molière awards for direction and design.
What drew you to Good Canary and why return to it?

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-Harry Potter career has seen him outwitting a coterie of magicians and infiltrating a group of white supremacists, but he’ll be performing a different kind of sleight of hand in his latest project. Deadline reports that Radcliffe has just joined Zachary Quinto in the cast of We Do No Forget, a fictionalized account of the real-life feud between the Anonymous hacktivist organization and one of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartels. Stranger Than Fiction scribe Zach Helm, who’s writing the upcoming Jumanji sequel, will direct from his own script, with Antoine Fuqua producing via his Fuqua Films production company.
First Look Media snapped up Helm’s project, which is inspired by the short-lived conflict between Anonymous and Los Zetas, which is purportedly the largest, most brutal, and most technologically-advanced cartel in Mexico. Back in 2011, the hacktivist group reportedly stumbled upon 25,000 Mexican ...

While she has the documentary The 13th arriving this fall, Selma director Ava DuVernay‘s next narrative feature will be Disney’s big-budget remake of A Wrinkle in Time. THR reports that, following Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are now in talks to star in the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s book. The film follows a young girl whose father has gone missing while he was away working on a project curiously known as the tesseract. She’s added by Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Winfrey). Production kicks off in November.

Daniel Radcliffe has built a fascinating career beyond the Harry Potter films, appearing in horror movies like The Woman in Black and things more completely off the wall like this year's Swiss Army Man, but let's get real — for a segment of the population, he'll never fully escape the legacy of playing The Boy Who Lived. Now Radcliffe will team up with another actor primarily known for one mainstream role: Zachary Quinto, who of course most people recognize as Mr. Spock in the Kelvin-verse Star Trek films. Deadline says that the two of them will star in a new movie called We Do Not Forget, and this one has a very interesting premise.
Written and directed by Stranger Than Fiction writer Zach Helm, the film will be a fictionalized version of a real conflict between the "hacktivist" group Anonymous and a Mexican drug cartel called Los Zetas. Deadline recounts some...

Sometimes funny, often poignant, narration can be hugely effective when deployed successfully. Ryan picks a few great examples...
“God help you if you use voice-over in your work my friends! God help you. That’s flaccid, sloppy writing. Any idiot can use narration to explain the thoughts of a character.”
So says screenwriting coach Robert McKee in Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman’s 2002 film, Adaptation. Well, not the real screenwriting coach Robert Mckee, but the one played in superbly aggressive style by actor Brian Cox, who stomps about on stage at a writing seminar like an angry bull. Brilliantly, McKee’s condemnation of voice-overs interrupts the interior thoughts, as narrated by Nicolas Cage’s fictionalised version of Charlie Kaufman - a terminally anxious screenwriter with an Everest-sized case of writer’s block.
It’s an example of the quirky, hall-of-mirrors kind of humour that courses through Adaptation,...

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...
Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.
Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Sony Pictures’ slate for 2016 and 2017, which includes a remake of the Robin Williams family film, has prompted cries of ‘too soon’ and ‘travesty’
Twitter users have reacted with fury to the prospect of a remake of the hit 1995 movie Jumanji, which starred Robin Williams as a man released from a magical board game in which he had been trapped for 26 years.
Industry stories of a Jumanji reboot had been quietly circulating for some time, but Sony Pictures’ slate announcement on 5 August confirmed it was going into production – and even named its release date: Christmas Day 2016. No director or actors have yet been named, but it is likely that Zach Helm will be one of the credited writers, after an announcement was made in 2012 that the Stranger Than Fiction writer had been hired to work on a script.

There's no director or star attached yet, but a new take on Jumanji will be in cinemas for Christmas next year...
We first heard rumblings of a potential remake of Jumanji back in 2012, but it's one of those projects that appeared to have quietly fallen off the radar. Back in 2012, Zack Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) was hired to pen a screenplay, and when we spoke to producer Matt Tolmach in 2014, he indicated the project was still active, but had nothing new to say on it.
His exact words to us? "I hired a very, very good writer called Zach Helm, who wrote Stranger Than Fiction and other things. And we're working on the script. I'm really excited about it".
Well, something must have clicked. As part of its new raft of release date announcements, Sony has confirmed a slot for the remake of Jumanji, and it's coming really rather soon.

The producers of the new Spider-Man movies chat to us about their plans for the Spider-Man universe. Plus: Ghost Rider, Hulk and Statham...
At the press junket for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, held in London last week, we started by chatting to the thoroughly lovely and amazingly calm director of the film, Marc Webb (you can read that interview here). In fact, so calm and warm was Webb, that it seemed a logical place to start when talking to the two men behind the scenes guiding the Spider-Man movie universe - producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
I've just come to you from interviewing Marc Webb, and I don't think I've ever interviewed a more relaxed film director! Does he ever get angry?
Matt: He's dangerous, dangerous!
He seems the calmest, quietest person. Just reassure me that he has a rage moment in there somewhere?...

On Sunday's episode of "Breaking Bad," the show decided to make fun of "Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium" movie, which stars Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman. And now, the director of the movie commented on the insult. Spoilers Ahead: In the episode, Walter White is taken into a secluded home in the woods. There is no internet or cable TV. The only entertainment he manages to find is two copies of "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," which White isn't pleased with. TMZ caught up with Zach Helm, the director of the movie, to get his thoughts on the episode. He said: "Having myself endured the ignominy of watching the train-wreck that is 'Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium' multiple times every day for over a year, I can attest to it being the perfect Hell for a character of such moral ambiguity as Walter White." Helm went on to say that having...

At one point, screenwriter and director Zach Helm was sort of a big deal. With two projects landing big names—"Stranger Than Fiction" starring Will Ferrell and "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" with Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman marking his feature debut—things seeemed to be going pretty well. With a little profile in Vanity Fair, he seemed poised for the next level. And then both those movies came out to rather lackluster response. But leave it to one of pop culture's biggest hits of the moment to spur the memory of one pop culture's forgotten projects. On last week's episode of "Breaking Bad," in one of the few light moments (spoilers ahead, duh), Walter White is shuttled off into hiding by Saul's fixer into a remote cabin in New Hampshire. With no phone, internet or cable, Walt is told he does have a TV with DVD player...and among his...

Besides setting up what will definitely be a climatic series finale, last week's Breaking Bad also unleashed a sick burn on the film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. So how did the film's director-writer Zach Helm respond? With complete agreement. "Having myself endured the ignominy of watching the Technicolor train-wreck that is Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium multiple times every day for over a year, I can attest to it being the perfect Kafka-esque Hell for a character of such moral ambiguity as Walter White," he told TMZ. Adding that Walter's two copies of it "is exactly two more copies than are allowed in my house." Poor Mr. Magorium, not even his creator finds him wonderful.

But then, in true Highsmith style, people start turning up dead.According to Deadline, talks are under way with a big name to star, but that might impact when Water gets flowing, as scheduling could become an issue. Eleven years ago Adrian Lyne directed Diane Lane to a Best Actress Oscar nomination in Unfaithful. Since then he's directed nothing. Now the director of Flashdance, Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal is ready to get back behind the camera with Deep Water at Fox. Written by Zach Helm (Stranger Than Fiction, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium), the film is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's thriller telling the story of Vic and Melinda, an attractive young married couple whose mind games with each other take a twisted turn when people around them start turning up dead. Previous Highsmith adaptations include Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train and Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley, which starred Matt Damon, Jude Law and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Deadline delivers the news and with it the unsurprising news a "big star" is already in discussions, though whether or not it's for the role of Vic or Melinda is unclear.

Over ten years since his last film "Unfaithful," filmmaker Adrian Lyne ("Flashdance," "Fatal Attraction") has closed a deal to direct a film adaptation of the classic Patricia Highsmith 1957 novel "Deep Water" at Film Rites and Film 360.
The story follows Vic and Melinda, an attractive young married couple whose mind games with each other take a twisted turn when people around them start turning up dead. A major star is already said to be in talks for the project which Zach Helm is scripting.
Highsmith penned the likes of "Strangers On A Train" and "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and is suddenly in vogue again with new films based on her works "The Blunderer" and "The Price of Salt" in development, and the already completed "Two Faces of January" opening later this year.

After stepping away from Hollywood for more than a decade, director Adrian Lyne is finally ready to make his big comeback.
