It looks like a major new asset of the PlayStation 5 hardware has just been inadvertently let out of the bag.
In a preview article for upcoming racing game sequel Wrc 9, Game Reactor references that the title will have built-in functionality with a so-called ‘Activities’ feature on PS5. A fascinating revelation, no doubt, but what good is a name without a description of is function? Thankfully, Gematsu managed to capture a screenshot of the associated paragraph in which Activities were mentioned not long before Game Reactor pulled the article from public viewing.
The excerpt reads as follows:
Also as a free update for those who get Wrc 9 on either PS4 or Xbox One, the game will upgrade to the next-gen versions on PS5 or Xbox Series X, and we’re looking forward to seeing how performance, graphics, or feature such as PS5’s Activities feature reveal the future of rally racing.

Sony has been largely silent since they first announced they were hard at work on the PlayStation 5. Sure, we’ve seen the new DualSense controller, Mark Cerny publicly gave developers some insight into the technical side of things, and we got a completely unsurprising logo reveal a while back. Still, gamers are dying to hear what Sony’s plans are for the new hardware and what games they can expect to get their hands on when it launches this holiday season.
It’s unknown when the company will finally come clean on all that, but according to one prominent YouTuber, we can expect one hell of a launch lineup. Fighting game enthusiast and commentator Maxamillian Dood claims that the holiday releases will be “pretty f*cking big” and will include some exciting sequels, reboots, and remasters that should appeal to a wide variety of players.

Originally scheduled for last Thursday, Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal was postponed due to ongoing protests following the death of George Floyd. However, a Twitch ad that went live today has revealed that the new date for the reveal stream will be Thursday, June 11th at 1pmPT/4pmET. Sony is expected to publicly announce the updated information later today or tomorrow.
The reveal stream will be the most substantial information drop we’ll have seen about the PS5 yet, as Sony has remained fairly tight-lipped about their upcoming console. So far, we’ve only gotten a glimpse at the new DualSense controller and heard some stuff from Mark Cerny about the benefits the new system will offer developers, so eager fans have been impatiently waiting for Sony to finally make a move.

Sony somewhat elaborated on the PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility support by saying that you can expect to play most of your favorite PS4 titles on the upcoming console.
“Lastly, we’re excited to confirm that the backwards compatibility features are working well,” Sony says. “We recently took a look at the top 100 PS4 titles as ranked by play time, and we’re expecting almost all of them to be playable at launch on PS5. With more than 4000 games published on PS4, we will continue the testing process and expand backwards compatibility coverage over time.”
During the recent PS5 technical specs reveal video, PlayStation’s chief architect Mark Cerny also noted that the PS5 will enhance the performance of supported PS4 games. Sony has revealed some of the very first details regarding the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 gaming and entertainment system. This sounds like it’s going to be pretty freakin’ cool and may end up being the ultimate gaming console.
Two of the biggest things that were revealed are that it will include a solid state drive and also have backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4! These things are a pretty big deal for gamers! The Ssd will give the system the power to match the increased and improved graphics and storage needs for the next-gen games.
The Ssd drive will also dramatically speed up the loading and rendering time for the games. According to Wired, PlayStation 5 lead system architect Mark Cerny teased that the Ssd drive built into Sony’s next-gen console “is something a little more specialized” than what is currently available for PCs:

Don't expect it to launch this year, but the PS5 is starting to sound very impressive indeed...
Sony has revealed loads of new information about its next-generation console in a hugely informative interview with Wired. In short: the successor to the PS4 is sounding very impressive already.
The article is very technical, but it packs a lot of very interesting details for hardcore gamers and casual players alike. For starters: the console will have a disc drive, and it will be backwards compatible with the PS4 and the Psvr headset. Whether it will be compatible with anything older than that remains to be seen.
The PS5, or whatever it ends up being called, will have some major upgrades compared to the PS4: for one thing, it will have an Ssd drive, which could reduce loading times dramatically.

Sony calls the PlayStation 3 its "Icarus moment" and reveals how it affected the company.
Sie Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden was coy during a recent Dice 2019 presentation when he said that the shortcomings of the PS3 were a real wakeup call for Sony and the PlayStation team.
"PlayStation 2 was an industry triumph, it remains one of the best-selling consoles of all time," Layden said during a Dice 2019 speech. "But coming off the heels of that, was PlayStation 3: a stark moment of hubris in the nearly 25 years of PlayStation history. As we sometimes call it, PS3 was our Icarus moment."
The hubris that Layden refers to when discussing the PS3 touches on a few things. The biggest, as Layden points out, was the console's "price point" which was a stunning $599 for the console's premium 60 Gb unit. Many fans couldn't believe the PS3 was so expensive at launch,...

Everything you need to know about the PlayStation 5, including latest news, specs, and the rumored release window.
Sony is preparing to unveil its next-generation console. The PlayStation 5, as it it's officially called, will be Sony's latest foray into gaming after dominating the current generation of consoles with the PS4.
The real question is how the new console will perform against its immediate competitor, Xbox Series X, Microsoft's own next-gen machine, which boasts powerful specs and a few interesting features. And let's not forget Google Stadia, which could be a big step into a future where players no longer need consoles at all.
But that future seems to still be a while off. Until then, we still get to obsess over the upcoming console war. Here's everything we know about the PlayStation 5:

One of the most surprising games of E3 2016, Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, will not be on stage this year when Sony presents their wares. Read Kojima's tweet below and see if you can decipher it. Plus, find out when you can see the man, himself, live and in person at E3!
When we began on the long, winding road to E3 2017, one of the games we were most excited to get an update on was Hideo Kojima's first game since Konami, Death Stranding. Alas, we aren't so lucky this year as Kojima has tweeted out that his team has decided to forego E3 2017 in favor of spending that time developing. That didn't mean Kojima, himself, wouldn't still be in attendance, though.
Apologies to our fans, Death Stranding will not be @ E3 as we are fully focused on development. Pls see me with @geoffkeighley on 6/14! pic.twitter.com/w...

You may recall back in January when Hideo Kojima, having just parted ways with Konami after close to 30 years, embarked on a world tour of Sony’s first-party studios with Mark Cerny, sampling development tools and other resources from Sony Santa Monica to Media Molecule, and everywhere in between.
The purpose of that trip was, of course, to locate a game engine on which to build Death Stranding, the first title to come out of the Kojima Productions that once again dazzled the industry with a new, and frankly bonkers trailer at The Game Awards late last week. In it, we seen both Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen feature, and Kojima has now confirmed that the latter will indeed take point as the game’s antagonist.

Lead System Architect Mark Cerny dissects Sony’s thought process behind PS4 Pro in typically cool, calm fashion in this new video released by PlayStation Blog.
Pulled from yesterday’s PlayStation Meeting, the decorated developer touches on a variety of different questions and queries, including Pro’s technical innards, the adoption rate of 4K compatible TVs and, in particular, television sets that support Hdr (High Dynamic Range).
Placing a big emphasis on graphical fidelity and improved visuals across the board, Cerny noted that “the new console is primarily targeted at higher fidelity graphics and smoother framerates. These are great areas to focus on because they don’t alter the fundamental gameplay. The creator’s vision is just represented in a richer fashion. Developer and publishers have also been quick to adopt the new platform.”

As far as game developers go, Naughty Dog are undoubtedly up there with the best of them. First formed as Jam Software by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984, the company created two games for the Apple II and two for the Apple Iigs, Amiga and Dos, changing their name to Naughty Dog before the release of the latter of these, a title named Keef The Thief.

Sony has revealed via the official Gdc website that it will give a presentation on “innovation at PlayStation and the future of gaming” at the upcoming Game Developer’s Conference.
Though “future of gaming” is a pretty vague label, there’s reason to believe the presentation will be quite compelling — mainly, because of swirling rumors about an upcoming virtual reality headset from Sony. Though the company does already sell movie-watching headgear, the rumored Oculus Rift competitor would, as expected, be designed specifically for gaming. Whether it’s something that would work with the PS4 is unclear, and even if it is revealed, there’s no guarantee it’s not a separate product entirely.
Even so, PS4 lead architect Mark Cerny did toot virtual reality’s horn just recently, so hopefully that means the rumored product (if real) will come to Sony’s current-gen console. He said the following when asked...

Ah 2013. The year when this generation finally began to come to a close, and everyone is just starting to nestle comfortably around their Xbox One, PS4, or Wii U. It’s also been the year of some genuinely excellent gaming experiences – GTA V, The Last of Us and Tomb Raider are all examples of an excellent gaming year – but, like every other year, there’s also been a fair share of stinkers released into the wild as well.
Those who purchased these piles of cow dung masquerading as something better than they were due to clever marketing and shiny box art are the true sufferers. Perhaps you played them through to the end, hoping that the experience would somehow get better. How naive you were – these games were never going to get better, and often ended up betraying our trust as gamers.

With the critical embargo for PlayStation 4’s launch lineup effectively ending yesterday, early reviews for Sony’s three first-party titles appeared online, and the company have responded to the decidedly mixed reaction. Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has expressed his disappointment with the initial impressions.
Here’s what Yoshida had to say about the scoring spectrum:
“With this launch there are lots of games coming out, so the media must be very busy going through the games quickly, and especially since the online functionality wasn’t ready until in the last couple days. So we have to look at how much time they spend on what aspect of the games and how that may be contributing to some of the lower scores.

With the imminent release of the next-gen consoles, it’s almost guaranteed that the Internet will be saturated with nine kinds of unboxing videos. However, in a new video published by Wired, Sony’s engineering director Yasuhiro Ootori unboxes the company’s PlayStation 4 quite literally. The footage, which you can check out in the video below, is a piece by piece demonstration of the console’s internal components.
While Sony has outlined the console’s specifications in the past, this is our first tangible look at what’s under the PlayStation 4’s jet black exterior. In the video, Ootori pays attention to various components including the slimline x86 Amd processor and the hardware’s internal power supply. What’s more, he also underlines the PS4’s stepless cooling fan —a feature that will allow the system to match its output in accordance with the console’s temperature.

In 2009 the first trailer for The Last Guardian was revealed to the word at E3. When the trailer finished, every single gamer worldwide immediately hailed Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian as possibly the greatest game trilogy ever made. (I’ll assume that you are reading this due to an interest in the subject matter, so I won’t badger on about what the game is. A boy, a cat/dog/bird thing called Trico and a castle. It’s like Ico meets Shadow of the Colossus. Sounds marvellous. Let’s move on.)
However, as of autumn 2013 The Last Guardian hasn’t been released yet. Still. Despite an expected 2011 release. So what is going on? Why is one of the most anticipated games of all time running late? Very late. (Too late?)

Though Mark Cerny, lead architect behind the PlayStation 4, announced the feature back in February, Sony reiterated to Kotaku yesterday that gamers will be able to use their real names as an online ID when the console launches next month. The personal touch, which will allow players to be identified by their full name as opposed to a seven-year old pseudonym, is a key element in Sony’s plan to create a user-friendly online experience.
It’s worth keeping in mind that this feature is entirely optional, with players having the choice between anonymity and real name identification from the get-go. Although many gamers would have preferred the option to change their Psn usernames, the real-name option seems to be a way for Sony to circumvent the long-gestating demand.
In tandem with the confirmation, the company also addressed the cross-party chat feature on PlayStation 4, stating that the connection will support up...

Amidst the delays of such former PlayStation 4 launch titles like Driveclub and Watch Dogs, there are numerous games that will still apparently make the system’s launch. Among them is Sony Japan Studio’s Knack, a family-friendly action game headed by veteran developer Mark Cerny. The PlayStation Blog recently updated with some interesting new details regarding both Knack‘s story and gameplay, and what’s listed sounds intriguing.
The goal stated regarding Knack‘s development is to harken “back to the golden days of Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter,” two series that Cerny was involved with previously. The story will revolve around the titular character, who has been developed as a secret weapon to help mankind against a goblin invasion. Knack will set out with various companions to find the goblin hideout, as well as figure out how the goblins recently discovered advanced weapons technology. A human antagonist named...

Arguably the most pivotal point in Microsoft’s Xbox 360 finding more success worldwide was its more developer friendly internal system architecture. Games were developed similarly to the outline of structuring a PC game. Meanwhile, Sony was in a bubble with their head in the clouds preaching on about the power of the Cell. Don’t get me wrong, Sony’s first party games (The Last of Us, Beyond, Uncharted 3) are the definitive graphic kings of the seventh console generation. That does not change the fact that third party corporations often developing simultaneously on multiple consoles didn’t have the necessary time to crack the internal rubix cube that was the PS3.
Over time the situation was remedied but quite a lot of prolific development studios weren’t happy and ultimately did not see the point in the systems complexity. During the past two years or so other studios caught up...

Picture this: You're playing your favorite game. You're low on lives, low on ammo and know there's a boss battle coming up. Your PlayStation 4 controller can sense your fear -- or at least that was the plan.
In an interview with Stuff magazine, Sony's lead system architect Mark Cerny said the company "looked at pretty much any idea we could think of" when updating its DualShock controller for its new game console. One of these ideas was apparently measuring a player's stress based on how much their hands were sweating.
"Would it help to measure the galvanic response of the skin?," Cerny said to Stuff. "We tried out a tremendous number of things—and then we went to the game teams to ask them what they thought they could use from the controller."
The DualShock wouldn't have been the first controller to take note of a gamer's vitals as they play.

Day 2 of the gaming industry conference kicked off with a keynote speech from industry hero (introduced as “the David Beckham of the gaming industry”) and PS4 lead architect, Mark Cerny, who talked autobiographically about the journey he and the PS4 have been on.
In a career that started at Atari in 1982 and saw him work at Sega and then heavily with Sony PlayStation since it’s inception, on games like Crash Bandicoot for PS1 and Ratchet & Clank for PS2. Having embraced third party collaborations and the indie game scene, Cerny pitched to Sony president Shuhei Yoshida that he should be lead architect on the upcoming PS4, Yoshida accepted.
Cerny’s hour-long address did an excellent job of convincing that the PS4 is in good hands. Although his talk was light on specific details, further sessions by others at Sony were more specific. Here’s a bunch of things we learned about the PS4 from today,...

This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) marked an exciting moment for the videogame industry. New consoles. New blockbuster titles. Long-awaited sequels. What follows is a list of the 15 most exciting games I saw this year. I got hands-on time with most of them, but it’s important to remember that playing videogames at E3 is not the same as actually playing the videogames. At E3, you’re staring at the most expensive TV screens corporate money can buy, while various company reps urge you on and assure you that you’re much better at the game than all of...

Sony seems to have won the console war at E3 with the PlayStation 4, and now the company is looking to prove it has a strong lineup of games to back the system up. With the promise of 30 PS4 exclusive titles on the way, 20 of which will be released within year one, Sony featured an array of its new games in its E3 booth.
Zap2it had a chance to check out four during a behind-the-scenes press demo of the games. "Killzone: Shadow Fall" is one of the most hyped new titles on the console, and features a less linear storyline than previous iterations of the franchise. In the demo playable at E3, players are given the option of three alternate objectives to achieve in whichever order to complete a mission.
The touch pad on the PS4 controller acts similar to the D-pad and allows gamers to access different items by swiping the central touch control.

You hear one phrase every five minutes at E3 this year: “open world.” The sandbox-style of gameplay sets the player down in a large digital environment and lets them explore; essentially, the whole game is one gigantic level, usually with a linear narrative strewn with dozens/hundreds of mini-games and unique interactions. The genre has a long history: Popularized by Grand Theft Auto, perfected by The Elder Scrolls, deconstructed by Shadow of the Colossus, vulgarized by Saint’s Row. But at E3 2013, it’s almost surprising to find a game that doesn’t trumpet a gigantic in-game universe. No less...

The first game announced for the recently-revealed PlayStation 4 was “Knack,” a platforming game developed by Japan Studios, Sony’s internal development team. The game is being directed by Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PlayStation 4.
The official trailer shows off the game’s narrative elements as well as Knack’s ability to grow and shrink at will, turn invisible, and smash goblins with impunity. Knack’s ability to accrete junk parts and grow larger -- and then shed them to shrink back down -- reminds of Traveler’s Tales’ “Lego” series, but I’m also sure that “Knack” was specifically designed to show off the PS4’s ability to render so many discrete items at once.

During Sony’s PlayStation 4 event last night Mark Cerny announced that his team is currently developing Knack, an all-new action/platformer game headed for the next generation console.
Knack‘s story centers around a massive Goblin army that is threatening the existence of all mankind. To combat the threat the humans send forth a “veteran explorer”, their top military machines, and a cute three-foot tall creature named Knack.
The mysterious and powerful little Knack was created by a “not-so-mad scientist” (referred to only as “The Doctor”) after years of studying ancient relics from a “long lost civilization”. Knack has the ability to incorporate any relics that he finds in the environment into his body, which he can then use to transform himself “into a gigantic wrecking machine”. Over the course of the game he also discovers that he can “incorporate ice, metal and other substances into his body”, and by...

New York (AP) — Sony showed off what the PlayStation 4 can do, but not what it will look like.
The Japanese electronics giant talked about its upcoming game console for the first time and said it will go on sale this holiday season.
But Sony didn't reveal the device itself. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage throughout Wednesday evening's two-hour event.
"I don't know that the box is going to be something that's going to have a dramatic impact on people's feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles," said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

One of our favorite collective pastimes as gamers is looking back on all of the great stuff we played in the before time, when "joystick" referred to the thing sticking out of the machine you shoved your quarters into. This year's Game Developer's Conference, which goes down in San Francisco between February 28 and March 4, will pay particular attention to that facet of our shared experience with 11 developer-hosted "classic" postmortems.
The idea is to put the developer of each of the 11 featured titles onto a stage and have him -- they're all dudes -- take questions on their work from the gathered attendees. It's a pretty all star lineup that the Gdc planners have put together, including several of the show's own past (and present) Lifetime Achievement Award winners. For those of us who won't be able to make it to San Francisco, the 11 lectures will be filmed and made available...

"Fable" creator Peter Molyneux is pretty well-known in the gaming community for his tendency to speak hyperbolically and tease ideas that don't always deliver. Fortunately, "Fable" is one of his biggest ideas, and it has delivered over the course of three Xbox/Xbox 360 console releases, each of which improves on its predecessor. Between that series, not to mention "Syndicate," "Black & White," "Populous" and "Theme Park," it should come as no surprise to learn that the longtime developer of original games is being honored at this year's Game Developer's Conference with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Molyneux, who started working with games in 1982, will be receive his honors on March 2 in San Francisco.
