Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega are two examples of brilliant actors from different generations. With Freeman having established himself a few decades ago and Ortega already having a strong presence despite her young age, it’s fun to compare their careers and creative approaches — but viewers found it far less fun to compare their ages when watching the two having an on-screen intimate relationship.
Freeman Speaks Up Against Public Backlash
The audience largely found Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega’s latest collaboration, The Miller’s Girl, quite disturbing. In the movie, the two actors play an English teacher and his young student who indulge in their near-forbidden relationship, and some viewers lashed at the movie for “romanticizing” relationships between minors and those they’re dependent on.
Freeman strongly disagrees with the sentiment.
The actor recently sat down with The Times and addressed the public backlash against The Miller’s Girl.

It’s a bit of an irony that just as NBC’s “Must-See TV” juggernaut took off in 1994, execs there found themselves right in the middle of a completely different kind of televised spectacle: The O.J. Simpson arrest, trial and eventual acquittal.
Not only was then-nbc West Coast president Don Ohlmeyer one of Simpson’s best friends, but just a month before the killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman — followed by Simpson’s white Ford Bronco flight from justice and arrest — NBC had passed on a pilot starring the ex-football-star.
“It was just a strange time to be there because of Don’s loyalty to O.J.,” recalled Preston Beckman, who was NBC’s head of scheduling at the time, and one of Ohlmeyer’s and NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield’s key lieutenants. Ohlmeyer would occasionally bring up Simpson during the network’s afternoon meetings in their Burbank offices,...

Kevin Hart just can't seem to stop making stuff. The comedian can be found everywhere right now, from his Peacock talk show to his standup specials, and of course, Netflix. The biggest current streaming platform has hosted many a Hart-led project in recent years, and most of them have kind of come and gone without too much fanfare. Which is a shame because, at one point, the man convinced the great Wesley Snipes to appear alongside him in "True Story," a limited series partly based on Hart's own experiences. "True Story" topped the Nielsen streaming chart but, as the Chicago Tribune surmised, it sadly "lack[ed] any depth beyond what Snipes is bringing to it."
Now, Hart's at it again, this time with a new film helmed by "Straight Outta Compton" director F. Gary Gray that looks ... similarly kind of ok. In late 2023, the "Lift" trailer arrived, promising a $500 million...

Cillian Murphy delivers a powerhouse performance in Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed biopic “Oppenheimer.” As J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, Murphy cuts a striking figure in his suit and hat with his piercing blue eyes staring out through IMAX screens and into the souls of cinema-goers.
The movie is Nolan’s first-ever biopic and explores how Oppenheimer went from a troubled, homesick student at Cambridge University to the leader of the Manhattan Project and the creator of the atomic bomb, which was later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Murphy’s Oppenheimer is a supremely intelligent man with political leanings and a brain that could consume anyone in the room with him. But he’s also a troubled man, burdened by the weight of what he is trying to achieve and aware that his creation will change the world — and not necessarily for the better. It’s a...

Three decades after they were first introduced in the short film “Frog Baseball” and almost a dozen years after the first revival of their eponymous MTV show concluded, cartoon characters Beavis and Butt-Head returned for a Paramount Plus reboot series in August 2022. Whether it will continue past its first two seasons has yet to be decided, but it certainly has been well-received, as was the 2022 TV movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe.” At this point in the “Beavis and Butt-Head” franchise’s existence, no entry has ever attracted the attention of Emmy voters, but the time is right for that to change.

The ensemble cast includes Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey, Eamon Farren, Mimi Ndiweni and MyAnna Buring.
The critics consensus for this third cycle reads, “Capably shouldered by Henry Cavill’s gruff charm, ‘The Witcher’s’ plotty third season pays a fittingly fond farewell to this particular Geralt of Rivia.” Read our full review round-up below.

Before it aired on Showtime, the four-part “We Need to Talk About Cosby” was the talk of the Sundance Film Festival. “The title perfectly captures the tone, conveying the reluctance and unease felt by Bill Cosby’s longtime fans as accusations of sexual assault dismantled his legacy,” said CNN’s Brian Lowry. “In that sense, director W. Kamau Bell has made a four-part docuseries as much about what happens when heroes let you down as the man himself.”
The docuseries is chock-a-block filled with clips from Cosby’s near six decade career including his megahit 1984-92 NBC sitcom “The Cosby Show” where he became “America’s Dad” as the super cool pop Cliff Huxtable. There are also interviews with black comics, actors and writers on the series and several of the 60 women who have accused Cosby of being a sexual predator.

Universal’s “Jurassic World Dominion” roared to 18 million in Thursday previews.
The sixth film in the dino-saga is expected to loom large at the domestic box office this weekend, but it could be blistered by bad reviews and the continued popularity of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is still soaring in its third week of release. “Jurassic World Dominion” is expected to generate 125 million in stateside ticket sales from 4,600 theaters across North America.

Since his breakthrough performance as Mr. Darcy on the 1995 BBC miniseries “Pride and Prejudice,” Colin Firth has made stiff romantic characters his specialty, even going so far as to embody the Austenesque Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones film trilogy. He has, however, also demonstrated plenty of range over the last quarter century, and his newest role is perhaps his most demanding yet. The 61-year-old’s distinctively dark portrayal of convicted wife killer Michael Peterson on the HBO Max limited series “The Staircase” could earn him his first Emmy, which would nicely complement the Oscar already in his awards collection.
Firth won the favor of the film academy 11 years ago for starring as King George VI in “The King’s Speech.” This was his second consecutive try for a Best Actor Oscar, as he was first recognized for 2009’s “A Single Man.” His first and only Emmy nomination to date came...

Chris Pratt’s latest ode to his inner “action star,” Amazon Prime’s “The Tomorrow War,” is fighting its own battle with critics, who decry it as everything from “the garbage pizza of science-fiction films” to a “mediocre straight white savior fantasy in which the protagonist is…f—ing stupid.”
“The Tomorrow War” made its debut on Amazon Prime on Friday and is currently sitting at a lukewarm 53% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience review topping off at a more positive 80%. The Globe and Mail’s Barry Hertz calls it “Starship Troopers for dummies,” adding, “If I had a time machine, I’d punt myself to the past just before ‘The Tomorrow War’ went into production, and save everyone the trouble,” while Brian Lowry of CNN admits the picture has a “certain appeal,” “but strands its star in a pretty uninspired time and place.”

When it was first announced that Netflix were set to heavily push Chadwick Boseman‘s final two performances for Academy Awards consideration, there was an unfair line of criticism directed towards the streaming service that accused them of leveraging his tragic passing from colon cancer at the age of 43 in an attempt to secure Oscar glory.
The Black Panther star is more than worthy of being put forward in the Best Supporting Actor category for his turn in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, though, and if the early critical reactions to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom are anything to go by, then he’s also become the clear favorite to land the Best Actor trophy for what’s being described as an extraordinary showcase for a talent that was taken far too soon.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s T’Challa may always be remembered as Boseman’s career-defining role,...

Netflix dropped the standalone “Black Mirror” movie “Bandersnatch” on Friday, introducing its subscribers to the first of what it hopes to be many interactive, Choose Your Own Adventure-style streaming experiences, and critics can’t seem to agree on the show or what it signals for the future of the format.
The highly self-referential episode follows a video game developer (“Dunkirk” star Fionn Whitehead) who, in the process of working on a choose your own adventure-style video game, must confront the possibility that his own choices are similarly being controlled by some other outside force.
“You could read this as annoyingly self-referential, and initially I did too,” TheWrap’s Tim Molloy wrote in his review of the episode. “But thinking about it more, I think [‘Black Mirror’ creator Charlie Brooker] was being subversive — biting the hand that streams him.”...

Mary Poppins is back! But does she win over the critics? Emily Blunt takes on the role of the magical nanny in Mary Poppins Returns, Disney's new sequel to its hit 1964 musical film—and is even nominated for a 2019 SAG Award for her performance. The new movie, also a musical, also stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, Meryl Streep and Colin Firth and also features none other than original actor Dick Van Dyke. Mary Poppins Returns is now in theaters. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. 1. CNN's Brian Lowry writes that Mary Poppins Returns "could just as easily be titled "Mary Poppins...

Now that Netflix’s surprise “Cloverfield” sequel “The Cloverfield Paradox” has been available to stream for more than 24 hours, film critics from across the country have finally been able to weigh in, and let’s just say you’re probably better off re-watching “10 Cloverfield Lane” than giving the latest installment a go. Critics have not been to kind to “Paradox,” with IndieWire’s own David Ehrlich giving the movie a D review, calling it “direct to video garbage.”

“Twin Peaks” returned to TV on Sunday, 26 years after David Lynch’s original, and the jury is still out. All in all, many critics are praising the different turn the show is taking, with new characters and a radical form of storytelling. Many are excited to see where the show will go after the two-hour premiere of the revival, which was a “strangely welcome return to a familiar world.” “And for a program that never fit in a neat little box, Lynch and company have seemingly found the right time and place to reappear,” wrote CNN’s Brian Lowry in his review.

Haters Back Off has been one of the most highly-anticipated mainstream projects from a digital star. And the Netflix series, which delves into the quirky backstory of Colleen Ballinger’s brilliant character invention, Miranda Sings, arrived on the streaming service yesterday with much aplomb -- and to the confusion and delight of many critics.
By some accounts, translating the YouTube video format into a more traditional TV series isn’t necessarily seamless. “Miranda’s deluded caterwauling is one thing in short videos,” writes The New York Times in its review of the series. “Extended to half-hour episodes [there are eight], it makes for a lot of concentrated sourness.” CNN critic Brian Lowry agrees, comparing Haters Back Off to a Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been stretched to potentially unwarranted lengths -- though he does concede that the series illustrates “the lingering if narrowing gap between YouTube and more traditional platforms.”

With the new series 11.22.63, Hulu is trying to find a prestige drama to match the award-winning successes of its competitors in the streaming video industry. As of February 15th, J.J. Abrams and Stephen King’s time travel saga is available online, with critics offering up mixed reviews.
In 11.22.63, James Franco stars as Jake Epping, a high-school history teacher who goes back in time in order to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. His journey, however, creates several other unintended ripples, and Epping’s life and the lives of those around him are affected. The story is based off a best-selling book published by King in 2011.
Leading up to its release, 11.22.63 drew reviews in dozens of publications, but no clear consensus emerging. Some critics, such as Hank Steuver of The Washington Post, enjoyed it. “It’s a fun and easily absorbing thriller wrapped inside a cautionary tale about indulging in nostalgia,...

Revivals are tough.
Television audiences are a lot different from a decade ago.
A couple of initial television reviews of the six-episode “X-Files” are giving mixed marks for the revived television show.
Brian Lowry of Variety called the new Fox’s series as “joyless.”
“Based on the premiere, the harsh truth in here is that it’s as if creator Chris Carter and his collaborators have forgotten what people liked about the show,” he wrote.
From Indiewire, Ben Travers claimed that “The X-Files” revival doesn’t compare to its old self.
He wrote that the first episode “feels like a faded relic, barely clinging to what once made it great.”
Fox only ordered six episodes, which will premiere after the Nfc Championship game. It will certainly draw the audience numbers, but Fox is putting their finger on the pulse to see if they want more episodes.
Nonetheless, true X-File fans...

It may not have garnered the same critical acclaim as some of Amazon’s other shows, but the first season of Mozart in the Jungle was quality programming, and it has now returned for its second movement. Just ahead of the new year, Amazon Prime subscribers can now access ten new episodes of the symphonic comedy.
Mozart in the Jungle, which is based off a Blair Tindall memoir of the same name, goes inside the world of top-level concert musicians in New York City, with Gael Garcia Bernal leading the way as a flamboyant conductor and Lola Kirke co-starring as a young, determined oboist. The first season of the show premiered last December to generally positive reviews. A couple months later, Amazon picked up Mozart for a second season, and most recently, the show added another feather to its cap by scoring a pair of Golden Globe nominations.
