Fan fiction and home made short films. You either love them or you hate them. Some are hugely popular, professionally produced masterpieces, while some are just a couple of guys having fun. This latest offering definitely falls into the first category. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, Portal: No Escape is a breathtaking and beautiful imagining of events in the Portal universe.
The most noticeable thing about this video is its very high quality, in terms of both sets and effects. This is the first time I have seen portals used convincingly in a live action film, and the CG on the portal gun itself is especially stunning.
The director, Mr. Trachtenberg, will probably already be know to a lot of you. He directed 'More than you can chew' for Black Box TV back in May, and it got a lot of people talking. He is also behind the very successful online show 'The Totally Rad Show'.

"Portal" gets a lot of love on the internets, and with good reason. The ingenuity of its brain-bending, physics-based puzzles, the snarky antagonism of passive-aggressive AI villain GLaDOS and the singularly well-executed gimmick of on-demand teleportation all combined to make it one of the best games ever made. By the time, you reach its affecting, musical aftermath you're ready to do it all over again.
So, it's natural that "Portal" video tributes tend to come in a steady stream. Hell, one guy even had a custom "Portal 2" level made to propose to his girlfriend with. But, "Portal: No Escape" from director Dan Trachtenberg sets a high bar for anyone looking to capture the energy of Valve's hit games.
Actress Danielle Rayne ("All My Children") does a lot with her physicality to effective channel the mute tenacity of test subject Chell and what it might actually be like to be trapped in Aperture Science's dank halls.

As independent film has become cheaper and more accessible to the masses, the quantity has certainly gone up. But, with that, so has the quality of a few select, talented filmmakers. Valve has never stated that they have any interest in turning "Portal" into a film franchise, but Dan Trachtenberg went ahead and took his own shot, making a short film detailing the life of a female prisoner and her discovery of a certain kind of gun that makes holes. Not bullet holes, mind you...well you'll just have to see for yourself.
There's something about this film that makes it stand tall among all the other video game fan-made projects out there. For one thing, it's brilliantly edited and scored. The pacing and build-up of tension is pitch-perfect and the actress, Danielle Rayne, fits right into the world of "Portal," where strong, silent women rule the day.

Portal: No Escape Short Film. Dan Trachtenberg‘s Portal: No Escape (2011) short film stars Danielle Rayne. Portal: No Escape‘s plot synopsis: “Chell, a prisoner,… discovers an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (Portal gun) and uses it to try and escape imprisonment but all is not what is seems.”
This is a pretty cool science fiction short film but I enjoyed Dan Trachtenberg’s previous effort, the More than You Can Chew Short Film, far more. I also prefer the tech present in the Bionic short film. That being said, all the allusions to Danielle Rayne resembling Sarah Connor from Terminator: Judgement Day I can see but Lena Headey‘s Sarah Connor for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the one that has left a lasting impression in my mind.
The people behind the Portal video game have got to be happy that their main concept is being used in a venue like this.

Portal: No Escape is a live-action short film based on the poplar game Portal. The films stars Danielle Rayne (All My Children) channelling Sarah Conner in the role of Chell, a prisoner who discovers an Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device (Portal gun) and uses it to try and escape. Director Dan Trachtenberg has re-envisioned a rough take on game and turned in a solid 7-minute short with Portal: No Escape. Trachtenberg, who has been directing commercials for years, is currently working towards his feature film directorial debut, but for now you can get a small taste of his talents below.
If you are not familiar with Trachtenberg, than you don’t spend much time on movie blogs. Apart from being a filmmaker, he is also the host of The Totally Rad Show and a former co-host of Geekdrome. In addition to working on internet shows, Trachtenberg is the writer/director...

Holy crap Portal: The Movie?! Close, so very close, but it's only a short. Debuted on YouTube (via a tip by SlashFilm) today is a short film directed by Dan Trachtenberg (also of the Totally Rad Show, who last directed this short, too) titled simply Portal: No Escape, and yes indeed it features the badass Portal gun from Valve's beloved games in live-action. And it's awesome. The short stars actress Danielle Rayne. I actually caught this 7-minute film at Comic-Con, as he surprised everyone with the premiere of it during their live Trs panel. It's pretty damn cool, I highly suggest watching it (full screen if you can), check it out. Watch the Portal: No Escape short, directed by Dan Trachtenberg, from YouTube: The short was directed by film-fan-turned-filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, who said on Twitter about the release of the film, "1.5 years in the making, it is finally out. Looking...

[1] Portal: No Escape is a must see for everyone, but especially video game fans. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg [2], who has been directing commercials for the last few years, slowly working towards his feature film directorial debut. In May, he directed a horror short film "More Than You Can Chew" [3] for Black Box TV, which got a bunch of people in Hollywood talking. Dan surprise premiered a new short film at Comic-Con, which was met with a standing ovation by the almost packed crowd. The film brings a grounded realism to this sci-fi concept, which is rarely seen in video game movie adaptations. Watch Portal: No Escape now embedded after the jump. Trivia: ?The movie stars Danielle Rayne, who has been working on tv for the last two decades, including a regular stint on All My Children. If the strong female action character reminds you of Sarah Conner,...
