Scarlett Johansson’s choice to play a transgender man in an upcoming role has been met with scorn from many in the trans community. But columnists have been weighing in too, largely with disapproval.
In an opinion piece for The New York Times, trans author Jennifer Finney Boylan said Johansson’s casting reminded her of Mickey Rooney’s portrayal of Mr. Yunioshi in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which received backlash for using “yellowface” and caricaturing. Rooney, of course, was a white man playing an asian. And his comedic role has gotten fewer laughs as his part in the 1961 classic continues to grow more dated.
Boylan also criticized past transgender roles played by cisgender men, such as Eddie Redmayne and Jared Leto, who both won Oscars for their performances.

Lois Vossen, longtime exec producer of PBS’ documentary series “Independent Lens,” says she wasn’t surprised when “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” began to dominate the indie box office, receiving critical acclaim and pulling in more than $8 million from theaters across the country.
“Fred Rogers is beloved, and at a time when there is so much divisiveness, when there is a film about this person who stood for inclusiveness, love, tolerance, I think people are desperately hungry,” Vossen said in an interview with TheWrap.
In her 22 years at the Independent Television Service, and her 16 years overseeing the Emmy award-winning “Independent Lens,” Vossen said she’s developed a deep understanding of the power of documentary films and public media. And as part of the “Independent Lens” team that co-presented the Fred Rogers biopic, she envisioned its potential for success long before it hit theaters.

Rt America, the U.S.-based media outlet funded by Vladimir Putin’s Russian government, issued a lengthy statement of condolence on Thursday after the death of American broadcaster Ed Schultz, who was an anchor for the channel since 2016.
“Ed was a champion of the American working class. He saw government as a potential force for good, gave voice to labor unions, spoke inconvenient truths about American foreign policy, and wanted the U.S. to be a role model for the world,” read a statement from the network. “He was praised for his ability to think creatively, ask the tough questions, and give opponents the benefit of the doubt.”
Those sentiments were echoed by Schultz’s bosses, who took care to note his “patriotism.”

MSNBC's Ed Schultz's The Ed Show beat out Anderson Cooper's AC360 in the demo and total viewers on Tuesday night. In demo viewers, Schultz racked up 179,000 viewers to Cooper's 169,000. The margin was even further when you took in account total viewers, where The Ed Show garnered an impressive 965,000 viewers to AC360's 557,000. It wasn't all bad news for Cooper, the CNN anchor improved considerably from the week before, when he had trailed Schultz by over 100,000 demo viewers.

Someone at The Ed Show has a flair for prop comedy. On Tuesday night, host Ed Schultz mocked presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney's longing for strolls on the Champs-Élysées by donning a progression of Franco-philic accessories. Romney has taken guff from political pundits over his choice to fondly remember vacations in France, rather than his years as a missionary, but Shultz was also quick to point the right's hypocritical silence on Romney's Frenchiness.

At the tail end of his Vive la France campaign stop in Pennsylvania Monday, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney delivered an unprompted encore, returning to the mic to express support for President Obama's (without naming him) proposal to extend low-interest rates for student loans. On Monday night's The Ed Show, host Ed Schultz asked Romney to put his money where his pander is, calling on the former Massachusetts Governor to get on the horn to Congress and make it happen.

Rep. Paul Ryan's calls for fiscal austerity have not exactly been met with cheers around The Ed Show, as is to be expected. But on the program last night, host Ed Schultz took a look beyond the politics to Rep. Ryan's interview with Catholic network Ewtn, and how the Congressman has explained discrepancies in thought between himself and the church. Joined by Prof. Michael Eric Dyson, Schultz argued that Rep. Ryan's reliance on the Church for charity was an easy way out, and Dyson argued that taking away safety nets was "antithetical to the fundamental issue of Jesus."...

Ed Schultz's The Ed Show put up some impressive numbers Thursday, topping both CNN and Hln combined in the demo. Schultz averaged 230,000 viewers more than Anderson Cooper and Nancy Grace's respective programs put together. Schultz has been a tour-de-force at the network with his steadily strong 8pm slot ratings performance for MSNBC over the past couple of months.

Ever since President Obama offered words of comfort to the family and supporters of slain teenager Trayvon Martin, the conservative media has been working itself into a lather pushing back against broad calls for justice in the case. Earlier, I detailed The Daily Caller's thorough contribution to the Trayvon Martin coverage, but on Thursday night's The Ed Show, host Ed Schultz lashed out at The DC and its founder, Tucker Carlson, accusing the site of "character assassination."...

Never in the history of our nation has a hug been so controversial. Barney the Dinosaur would be ashamed, and so is Ed Schultz, who continued to hammer Sean Hannity for pushing the controversy that President Obama has ties to the late, controversial professor Derrick Bell. Professor Charles Ogletree, who had the tape Hannity played on his show, came on The Ed Show today to not only defend himself and Bell, but also accuse the president's most ardent detractors of reaching too much to try and find something to go after him with.

Update: It seems Rush Limbaugh may have finally gone too far this time. After the conservative talk-radio host called a Georgetown law student a “slut” and “prostitute” after she testified before Congress about government-funded contraception, a number of companies opted to consider pulling their ads (or already have) from Limbaugh’s program. The Huffington Post reports that mattress store Sleep Train told followers via Twitter, “we made decision to immediately suspend all advertising on that program,” while other advertisers like ProFlowers said they would “reevaluate our marketing plan” and eHarmony assured followers, “We’ve never paid for ads on Limbaugh.

On Thursday, President Obama derided Republican efforts to score political points over rising gasoline prices, casting his Gop rivals as gleeful at the prospect of the political advantage presented by the misfortune of American consumers. On Thursday night's The Ed Show, host Ed Schultz and MSNBC contributor Richard Wolffe explained, to Republicans like $2-a-gallon promiser Newt Gingrich, exactly how global oil markets work, and how little domestic production can influence them.

"Gasland" director Josh Fox was arrested yesterday while documenting a public hearing concerning the topic of hyrdaulic fracturing (fracking). As Indiewire reported yesterday, Fox was later released. The arrest, whose lack of ground is attested to by Fox in the clip (he explains how he received permission), was also questioned by a female voice who asked the representatives on the panel "What about transparency?" "Gasland" and "Gasland 2" attempt to uncover the oil and gas industry's coverup of the alleged adverse effects of fracking. Last night, after Fox was released, he headed to MSNBC's "The Ed Show," where he explained to Ed Schultz why he was at the public hearing. Fox also addressed "Gasland 2," which he says is very nearly done. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy...
