Timed to SXSW, Freestyle Digital Media has picked up the North American rights to the music-driven documentary Finding Lucinda.
Directed by Joel Fendelman, the road movie follows singer-songwriter Ismay, also known as Avery Hellman, on a quest to track down her hero and music icon Lucinda Williams and the people and places that shaped her early career. The doc, which premiered at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, is set for a fall 2024 release by the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group.
Finding Lucinda features interviews with Charlie Sexton — who played with Williams when he was 11 years old and she was a little-known songwriter in Austin — Buddy Miller, Mary Gauthier, Josh Baca and Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs, Wolf Stephenson and John Grimaudo, Williams’ guitarist from her first record.
The film was written by Fendelman and Hellman, and produced by Liz McBee, Chuck Prophet and Jennifer Steinman Sternin.

When Tyler Childers was named Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Americana Honors & Awards, he let loose with an acceptance speech for the ages, denying the very term “Americana” and pointedly declaring himself a country artist.
“As a man who identifies as a country music singer, I feel Americana ain’t no part of nothin’,” he said onstage at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium that year. “It is a distraction from the issues that we are facing on a bigger level as country music singers.”

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. But in person, hearing them delivered in Williams’ syrupy Southern drawl, they’re especially captivating.

The first catastrophe of 2020 came slightly earlier than most for Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. On a stormy evening in early March, the couple found themselves racing around Woodland Studios — the historic East Nashville recording facility that’s served as the duo’s home base since 2001 — trying to rescue their life’s work after a direct hit from a tornado. Their master recordings, instruments, and gear were all threatened by the rain pouring into the building for the past four hours.

For his first solo album, the Scissor Sisters frontman “moved to New Orleans, wrote himself out of a cataclysmic breakup, and then recorded in Louisville, Kentucky,” writes Barry Walters. “The result overflows with the opulence of orchestral Seventies pop – as if Elo and the Bee Gees got together to make a Muppet fantasia of Cajun rock.”

Well yeehaw, the gang’s all here!
On Thursday, Nashville ended its series finale with a fourth-wall-breaking bit that brought back most of the actors who’d appeared on the show over the past six seasons — including Connie Britton, who left the drama when Rayna died in Season 5.
After Deacon brought out Gideon to join him onstage at Ryman Auditorium, they began to play “A Life That’s Good.” Slowly, they were joined by Daphne, Maddie and Scarlett, then Avery, Will and Juliette. The scene moved from fiction to reality as Britton stepped out to stand next to Charles Esten,...

Maren Morris seemed to be addressing her critics in a series of tweets on Wednesday night.
The country music star wrote, “In a world where girls are a lot of times pit against each other, I have to say, ‘Hell no.’ Good music is coming back, girls And boys.”
She continued with a series of tweets addressing the continuing rise of strong female influencers in the industry, as well as artists she knows and works with, including Kacey Musgraves and Buddy Miller.

Nashville‘s Juliette Barnes is never better than when she’s taking off her metaphorical earrings and gearing up for a tussle with a formidable foe. That’s why we should all bow down and kiss the petite pop-star feet of one Ms. Jade St. John.
Because if the former-almost-Mrs.-Fordham hadn’t come to town with her Jem-and-the-Holograms hair and her improbable cheekbones, we never would have seen Cadence’s hormonally unstable mommy spout off in a tirade containing the phrase “Country Barbie jacket.”

Laura Benanti is a Tony award-winning veteran of several Broadway shows, which means her transition to musical performer on the ABC drama Nashville wasn't that much of a stretch. Although she's extremely disciplined (thanks to a theatrical schedule of eight live shows a week), her introduction to viewers on the series this season hasn't been without its professional challenges. But as Sadie Stone, new Bff to country superstar Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton), Benanti is making it look effortless.
"In some ways this is music boot camp," Benanti told Rolling Stone...

The lesson for this week's Nashville episode seems to be no matter what mode of transport you use, you can't outrun your problems. That goes for a bitchin' bike, a killer Mustang and…a parked car?
In the middle of wedding preparations, Rayna wants a meeting with Sadie Stone. Of course, Rayna's interest not only has to do with Sadie's singing talent, there's a bit of an anti-Jeff Fordham/Edgehill Records power play at work! Rayna also explains to her Highway 65 peeps that Juliette probably won't be able to do...

When Hayden Panettiere gets her Nashville scripts, she reads them first as a fan, and then as an actor. “I don’t connect myself with the character immediately. Initially, it’s ‘Oh, my gosh, Juliette, you idiot! Are you kidding me?’”
And yet after a season where her country diva became an industry pariah by very publicly breaking up a radio titan’s marriage (and appearing to have denounced God’s existence in a viral video), then wound up betraying her soulmate Avery by drunkenly hooking up with the record exec who’d booted her from his label, “the brilliance...
