American Horror Story's shared universe aspect comes into its own this week with the fun return of a Coven character...
This review contains spoilers.
1.11 Battle Royale
It took Ryan Murphy five seasons and a return to a familiar stomping ground to bring American Horror Story full circle. The recycling of Pepper last season was a nice touch, and the freak show or the asylum was a common destination for unfortunate microcephalics back in the dark days, so to have the character move from one to the other makes sense. However, there wasn't a lot of modern crossing-over, aside from using the same actors. That's changed with Hotel. Whether it's the La location or the modern setting, old familiar faces have been popping up (and usually dying horribly) within the confines of the Hotel Cortez.
Christine Estabrook's Marcie and Matt Ross's Dr. Charles Montgomery were surprise visitors,...

Episode ten of American Horror Story Hotel, She Gets Revenge, works spectacularly well...
This review contains spoilers.
5.10 She Gets Revenge
There aren't a lot of action sequences in American Horror Story, but when something violent happens, as it does a lot this season, they tend to make a lot of it. The Hotel Cortez has been home to some terrible things, and it's always very stylish to behold. However, the titular Hotel is not really the centre of sweetness. Sure, there have been a few nice moments her and there, but nothing consistent, or played as straight as the reunion between Liz Taylor and her long-lost son Dennis. Throughout the episode, Liz and Iris make plans to commit suicide, but first they have to tie up their loose ends to keep from becoming prisoners of the Cortez. For Iris, that's simple: she has to cancel her magazines...

Hotel is the best and most intriguing American Horror Story has been in a long while, as She Wants Revenge shows...
This review contains spoilers.
5.9 She Wants Revenge
It's been a while since a season of American Horror Story has been this consistently good, both in terms of acting, characterisation, and general plotting. Hotel is a world full of interesting characters portrayed by interesting actors who make interesting choices. The collection of visual styles—high fashion, 1920s class, 90s funk, 60s glamour, 80s rocker chic, and a whole host of other distinctive looks—add colour and depth to a world in which there are people who are trapped out of their own time and people who are not constrained by the tick-tick-tock of the clock and the limitations of a mortal time frame. The Hotel Cortez is a home for ghosts, immortals, and damaged wanderers plucked at...

Well, this episode certainly took a hard left turn, didn't it? After last week's optical Ambien recap of how John Lowe is the Ten Commandments Killer, we don't see Wes Bentley or his beautiful ass once this episode. Sure, there's plenty of killing and bloodletting, but not even a single measly Seven rip-offs. For all of you skeptics out there, the crazy measles vampire children are back too. Could this be the season where all of the plot threads come together without any being dropped or forgotten? It could be!"She Wants Revenge" starts off with the Countess delivering a very interesting voiceover. She says things like, "The last 100 years of my immortal life have been a lie. The illusion of control. In fact, I have controlled nothing." Wow, that is deep. "It is time to construct something new, something durable. I will not be managed." Alright! I'm ready to...

The Countess is one force to be reckoned with, and trust me, you don't want to be on her bad side. Hell, sometimes you don't even want to be on her good side. And it seems that after over a century, she wants to right her life again. In "She Wants Revenge," the Countess puts a plan into action to take control of her life and she stops at nothing to get her happiness. Meanwhile, Alex quickly realizes the consequences of her actions when she "saves" her measles patient.

**Trigger warning for survivors of sexual assault – episode contains a graphic rape scene.**
American Horror Story has always represented co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk at their most luridly unrestrained, but the premiere of this year’s installment, subtitled Hotel, is a true deluge of dark decadence, even by their standards.
The only hour made available for critics (an out-of-character move for FX, and perhaps one consequence of Murphy and Falchuk’s very busy schedule this year), it’s a sprawling, over-stimulating smorgasbord of an episode, so consumed with introducing the show’s latest house of horrors, and all its ghoulish inhabitants, that in its entire 62 minutes it barely ever comes up for air. The effect is both exciting, given that American Horror Story‘s knack for highly visual storytelling has never been more evident, and a tad exhausting. Last season took viewers inside an actual freak show,...

Joaquin Phoenix's life is as unique as the characters he plays onscreen.
The actor has been working on and off since the early '80s, though it wasn't until his star turn opposite Russell Crowe in "Gladiator" (2000) that Phoenix became a household name. Since then, Phoenix has turned in a string of unforgettable performances, most notably his incredible portrayal of Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line" (2005).
Whether or not you've had a chance to see Phoenix fall in love with a computer in this year's Oscar-nominated "Her," there's still much to know about the established star. From his unusual upbringing to his music videos, here are 17 things you probably don't know about Joaquin Phoenix.
1. The actor was born in 1974 and is the third of five children: River (b. 1970), Rain (b. 1972), Liberty (b. 1976), and Summer (b. 1978).
2. His parents were members of the religious group the Children of God, leading to...

It's been a long wait for new music from Lady Gaga and few are as excited about it as the pop star herself, who began a countdown to the release of her first single off her upcoming album.
On Monday (August 5), the "Born This Way" singer tweeted, "Applause 8.19 #14days," followed by an image promoting her record, featuring the artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta holding a prosthetic arm in platform shoes, black pants, and nothing else.
Last week, the 27-year-old songstress posted a few pics of her work in the studio, sharing one of herself in a black brassiere and tiny denim cutoffs with members of the band "She Wants Revenge."
Back to social media with a vengence, Gaga has also been using her Twitter account to promote her new mobile app, tweeting, "The Artpop app is Free, available in App Stores on your device. You can purchase the music...

Get ready Little Monsters! Lady Gaga's single "Applause" is almost ready for public consumption and the singer has started a countdown for her most devoted fans. "Applause 8.19 #14days" she wrote on her Twitter. And if that wasn't enough to get everyone hyped up for the pop icon's new music, she's been releasing behind-the-scenes pics on the social media site for all to see. In one shot, she appears to be in the studio working on Artpop with the band She Wants Revenge. Gaga introduced the band in a caption on the photo and was wearing a relatively risqué outfit for her recording session. Although, is that all that surprising? Donning a pair...

The last girl standing at the end of a slasher film. I have a failure of imagination simply because I know that Abigail Breslin is set to lead us through an upcoming Tyler Shield‘s movie Final Girl. On the other hand, I have nothing against her partner in this film – Alexander Ludwig. But, the good thing is that we have some new cast members on board for the whole thing – Wes Bentley, Logan Huffman, Michael Trevino, Connor Paolo and Francesca Eastwood!
And although the shooting on Final Girl starts next month, we still have no details about their roles. Which sucks, but hey, at least we finally have an official synopsis part to share with you today, and it goes like this:
Loner Veronica is new to school, shy and vulnerable the perfect target for a group of teenage boys who lure girls into the woods to hunt and kill them for sport.

.Is Agoura Hills part of the San Fernando Valley?. asks 'She Wants Revenge' front man Justin Warfield. The crowd responds "no." He says, .Well it.s close enough to the Sfv for us to say that this is our first time playing our home town!. This past Father.s Day at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, a city outside of the greater Sfv and Los Angeles area, 'She Wants Revenge' and openers Nico Vega each put on an excellent show. The opening act Nico Vega had a truly unique sound that showcased Psychedelic-tinged hard rock sound with Sonic Youth style delivery. Nico Vega is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2005.
