“Mortal Kombat” star Lewis Tan has landed the leading role in an anticipated adaptation of the David Ignatius novel “Quantum Spy.”
Tan will serve as star and co-executive producer on the pilot from Boies/Schiller Entertainment, Anonymous Content, Flame Ventures and “24” alum Tony Krantz.
The project was first in development at NBC, though Boies/Schiller has renewed rights solely and will take the project to a slew of buyers this week, sources said. The work from Ignatius, the award-winning Washington Post columnist, follows a top-secret American quantum research lab compromised by a Chinese mole.
Tan will play newly-assigned Chinese-American CIA officer Harris Chang, tasked to hunt down the traitor. Soon, he’s caught in an ever-expanding maze of spymasters, assassins and temptations turning the investigation into a personal obsession. Though action-packed and sexy, the property also gets to the heart of a timely discussion in content and across the country...

Is Jack Black replacing Matt Damon in the Bourne franchise? Thankfully, no, however The Hollywood Reporter tells us the funnyman has teamed back up with Kung Fu Panda writers Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger for a live-action comedic take on The Bourne Identity. In the film, Black will play some dude who washes up on the shores of Cuba with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Of course, he automatically believes he's a superspy (thanks Hollywood!), though nothing could be further from the truth. Sounds like a funny premise -- but is Black the right one for the role?
Meanwhile, Sky High's plant-loving sidekick, Danielle Panabaker, is going back to school. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she'll star in Chuck Russell's upcoming sci-fi action film called Prodigy. Based on Dave Kalstein's book,...

NEW YORK -- Intrepid Pictures has purchased Dave Kalstein's screenplay The Prince, a psychological thriller centering on a prep school student framed as a terrorist who seeks revenge on his former classmates.
The production company plans to co-finance the project either through its Universal Pictures/Rogue Pictures first-look deal or with another partner.
Intrepid founders Trevor Macy and Marc Evans paid in the low-six figures for the script and are set to produce the project, with plans to finalize a production deal by mid-2007. The pair developed the idea with Kalstein and commissioned him to write the screenplay.
"It's a modern-day 'Count of Monte Cristo' set in New York's jet-set society," said Kalstein, who based the script on his experiences getting kicked out of prep schools. After the title character is falsely charged with a planned Columbine High School-style attack, he is sent to prison and re-emerges among his old cohorts with a new identity. He plays on their fears and ambitions, ultimately killing them or exposing their secrets in his quest for justice.

NEW YORK -- Showtime is headed for The Canyons, a horror-tinged soap opera being developed by Bret Easton Ellis and Dave Kalstein.
The pay cable network has ordered a script from the project, about a group twenty- and thirtysomethings in Los Angeles. It centers on a 29-year-old magazine editor who escapes his hard-partying New York life by following his best friend and a new girlfriend across the country, only to find himself virtually isolated when his friend is killed in a mysterious accident.
The six main characters -- including an art gallery owner, lawyer, event planner and a closeted bartender -- deal with career and relationship issues. They encounter violent situations and anxieties that are briefly manifested as monsters and other apparitions that may or may not be real.
Despite the surreal touches, Ellis says he doesn't want the series to venture into David Lynch territory. "There are no midgets walking backwards," he said, laughing. "We want something much more naturalistic -- a very realistic soap."
Ellis said he developed the idea during one of his "dark periods" living in a Los Angeles hotel while looking for a home.
