This post contains spoilers for Netflix's "Fool Me Once."
Every Harlan Coben novel ends with a trademark twist. The shocking nature of these revelations usually re-contextualizes our understanding of established character motivations and leads to breakthroughs in unsolvable cases. Coben's "Fool Me Once," adapted by Netflix into an eight-episode series, employs a similar trope by introducing a twist that questions our allegiance to the central protagonist. The problem, however, is that these subversions are not backed by narrative logic and quickly fall apart once probed on a superficial level.
"Fool Me Once" is a murder mystery/thriller that opens with the death of Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage), who seems to have been shot during a street robbery gone wrong. His wife, ex-military pilot Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), is grieving both the death of her husband and her sister, Claire (Natalie Anderson), who died over the span of a few months.

It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

Two-time “Survivor” contestant and fan-favourite, Keith Nale, has died at 62, Et has learned.
Keith’s son, Wes, told Et on Tuesday, “He passed away this afternoon. He’d been battling cancer for the past few months and we found out about it in January.”
Keith’s brother, Kevin Nale, told Et, “A life taken way too soon!”
“It happened so quickly. Cancer ate him up. He passed this afternoon at his home in Shreveport, Louisiana,” Kevin shared.
Keith participated in two seasons of “Survivor”; “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” and “Survivor: Cambodia”. Wes was a contestant on “Survivor: San Juan del Sur” with his father.
During his time on “Survivor: San Juan del Sur”, Keith was considered an underdog from the beginning, but managed to make it all the way to the final four thanks to his skill in Immunity Challenges and a well-played Hidden Immunity Idol. Natalie Anderson went on to win that season.

The Challenge rotates returning players and rookies for each season. Depending on the theme, viewers might not see a favorite for a few seasons. Here are five recent competitors who should return for next season.
Olivia Kaiser and Horacio Gutiérrez
The rookie standouts landed in back-to-back eliminations almost immediately after entering the competition and won both. They earned the respect of the house and avoided the Zone until episode 8 when her fling Nelson Thomas opted to save his rival Fessy Shafaat over her.
Regardless, with the help of the house, they sent home targets Jay Starrett and Michele Fitzgerald. When they split into teams, Horacio found himself in the Zone twice, and he eliminated Kenny Clark and three-time champ Jordan Wiseley, tying a franchise record for most elimination wins in a season.
Sounds like Olivia and Horacio balance out each other well! But can they stay on the same page while on The Challenge?...

Netflix recently added Survivor Season 32 to its streaming library, introducing a new group of people to the Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty cast, including the season’s winner Michele Fitzgerald. Michele is a bit of a controversial figure in the Survivor community. But despite the pushback she received after the season 32 finale aired, Michele has continuously proved why she deserved to win in the years following her first television appearance.

According to her CBS bio, she believed she would win Survivor because she “watched every season, so I know what it takes to be successful on this show. Using my charm, I think I can build strong relationships...

“Survivor” players know that only one person can win the game, but it always stings to be the first one eliminated. The pain of being booted first from your season has to be a difficult one to get over, especially for those who really wanted to play the game. First boots are often targeted because of age or challenge performance or etiquette around camp, and it’s sad to see people’s torch be snuffed after only three days on the island. Some early vote-offs make such an impression, however, that they are remembered even today. Above you can scroll through our gallery of memorable “Survivor” first boots ranked (or click here for direct access). We hope they get another chance to play again one day.
The latest addition to our gallery is Morriah Young (“Survivor 43”). The rainbow-wearing castaway was the first person voted out of Season 43, by a unanimous vote of 5–1. This Philadelphia teacher,...

Wes Bergmann recently explained that The Challenge is more difficult than Survivor. Pic credit: MTV’s The Challenge/YouTube
Since CBS’ The Challenge: USA arrived as a spinoff of MTV’s competition show, debates have started about the show’s difficulty compared to other reality TV competition shows.
A hot take arrived last week courtesy of former Survivor winner Tyson Apostol, saying his daughter asked whether Survivor or The Challenge was harder, and he told her it was the CBS show.
While he wasn’t necessarily responding to Tyson’s comments, Wes Bergmann has some thoughts about that, providing his hot take while talking with his friend and castmate, Devin Walker.
Wes, a two-time Challenge winner and recent All Stars 3 champion, appeared as a guest on the debut of Devin’s new podcast with Vegas Insider called Bet on Devin.

“Survivor 42” contestant Omar Zaheer has one of the coolest occupations of not just the season but in the entire history of the show. The 31-year-old Ontario native is an exotic animal veterinarian, and he compares the unpredictability of his line of work to the game of “Survivor.” “It’s all about panicking, staying calm,” says Omar in his CBS interview. “You never know what to expect, and that’s just like ‘Survivor'” (watch below).
As Omar describes, he rarely has any idea of what type of animal he will be working with from day to day. “You can come in one day and see a tiny 18-gram canary with a broken leg that you have to use your micro tools, on the next day you could have your arm shoved up a rhino’s butt,” he quips. Over the past 40 seasons of “Survivor,” men have won 25 times while women have only prevailed 15 times. (See the “Survivor” winners list.) The past six cycles in a row have all resulted in male champions, with the most recent woman winner being Sarah Lacina in Season 34. With the Season 41 finale set for Wednesday night, all eyes are on whether one of the last two females on the island (Erika Casupanan or Heather Aldret) can break the curse this year. Or will one of the three men prevail instead?

Viewers of MTV's The Challenge were thrown for a loop on Wednesday night when it was revealed that Natalie Anderson was "no longer cleared" to compete.

Anderson explained that she bowed out of the series after she found that she and Devin Perez, her boyfriend, were expecting a baby.

Maybe the twists and turns at tribal council aren't total madness after all. For two seasons, Natalie Anderson made a name for herself as one of the toughest contestants Survivor has ever seen. After all, she came this close to winning Survivor: Winners at War earlier this year even after she spent much of the season secluded on the Edge of Extinction, an abandoned beach with even fewer amenities than the main island. Hidden Immunity Idols have been a “Survivor” staple since Season 11, “Guatemala,” when Gary Hogeboom found the elusive token. Since then, idols are being used on a much more strategic level, with some finders even playing it on other people in the game. It is an added layer to the game that continues to make players even more paranoid than they already were, fearful of being blindsided by the finder. But who’s found the most idols on “Survivor”? Scroll down for the updated list.
Some “Survivor” contestants are dangerously good at finding idols. Once you find one, it generally becomes easier to know what to look for. Players like Russell Hantz, Tony Vlachos, Tai Trang, Rick Devens and Kelley Wentworth have all attained multiple idols in the same season. Not everyone plays their idol correctly, and some infamously fail to play them at the right time, resulting in their elimination.

Even though Tony Vlachos is now the King of “Survivor” — he’s the only man to win twice, in “Cagayan” and “Winners at War” — he has a message for fans out there who are calling him the “G” word. “Love my fans and thank you All for the props, however, I am Not the ‘Greatest’ player!” he recently tweeted. “I’ve never been the ‘greatest’ at anything, but I am ‘good’ at a lot of things and ‘Survivor’ is one of them. Three weeks ago, “Survivor” host Jeff Probst dubbed the just-ended “Winners at War” as “The G.S.O.S.O.A.T.” — in other words, “The greatest season of ‘Survivor’ of all time.” What with 20 former champs competing against one another, he told Entertainment Weekly, “They are absolutely killing it. Game-play at a level we have never seen before.”
But after the finale last Wednesday when Tony Vlachos was crowned as the Sole Survivor, we asked whether you agreed with Jeff that Season 40 — aka “the season on steroids” — was the ultimate in outwitting, outplaying and outlasting as the reality competition’s longtime motto states.

Natalie Anderson basically won the unofficial title of Queen of the Edge of Extinction on “Survivor: Winners at War.” As the first past champ to be cruelly banished to the EoE after being voted out on Day 2, she managed to fight her way back in by relying on her brains, physical strength and stamina along with a motherlode of fire tokens that she used both for herself and to also change the fates of other players.
With three advantages in her pocket to ease her path to returning to the game, Natalie was able to do so after winning the Season 40 finale’s get-back-in challenge that featured all of her fellow Edge dwellers. She also brought along an immunity idol to the main island that was still valid. She used that during the first Tribal Council to save herself.

In a post-finale interview with “Survivor” host Jeff Probst, Entertainment Weekly addresses several issues that popped up in the three-hour last episode of “Winners at War” after Tony Vlachos became just the second player to win the show twice.
First, he chatted about what every fan was thinking when runner-up Natalie Anderson, who came back from the Edge of Extinction and joined the competition again, did not offer to make fire against Tony. When the Edge first appeared on Season 38, the eventual winner Chris Underwood — who only played 13 days in the actual game — tossed away his immunity and volunteered to make fire against his biggest obstacle, Rick Devens, and won. Natalie instead allowed Sarah Lacina to go against Tony, who won.

“Natalie was well aware that Chris set the tone in Season 38,” Jeff says.

At the tail-end of Wednesday’s three-hour “Survivor: Winners at War” finale, Jeff Probst addressed the elephant in the garage: when is the air date for Season 41? “Let’s talk about our 41st season,” Probst declared. “Normally we show you a cool promo, but for obvious reasons we haven’t been able to shoot.” “Survivor” isn’t alone — the coronavirus pandemic shut down much of Hollywood for the past several months. In fact, Season 41 was supposed to have been in the can already, but has been temporarily delayed.
“Man, we have some fun ideas,” Probst teased about future installments. “We’re always trying to explore and evolve the show and take chances and we’re gonna do that. We’re committed to being on in the fall with our 41st season, which means you should apply, especially if you’re young. I’m talking teenagers — 16, 17, 18, 19. Do it. After a whopping 40 seasons of “Survivor,” a King has finally been crowned. Tony Vlachos, who originally dominated the game in “Cagayan,” just won “Winners at War” in a 12-4-0 vote over Natalie Anderson and Michele Fitzgerald. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog.) Tony is now the second player of CBS’s reality TV show to win twice after Queen Sandra Diaz-Twine, who prevailed in “Pearl Islands” and “Heroes vs. Villains.” See the updated “Survivor” winners list by scrolling through our photos above.

Boston Rob Mariano was right when he made an out loud observation as he wrote down the name of his pick for the Sole Survivor of Season 40. Natalie Anderson, who crushed her competition on the Edge of Extinction after being the first arrival on that lonely beach, did almost everything right to get back into the competition and return to the game — except for one move. She should have made sure that she wasn’t pitted against Tony Vlachos in the final three.
Instead, she was betting on Sarah Lacina to beat her cop buddy Tony at making fire. The edit made it seem he wasn’t that adept at sparking a flame with flint during practice. But he struck when the fire was hot and got his bestie kicked out of the competition. Natalie was much more worthy of the prize than Michele Fitzgerald, her other rival. But there...

In honor of its 20th anniversary, “Survivor” brought back 20 winners from previous seasons, but only one person came out on top during Wednesday’s finale.
During a socially distanced video call, host Jeff Probst revealed that Tony Vlachos won the season.
Heading into the final episode, five castaways remained to win the $2 million grand prize: Ben Driebergen, Denise Stapley, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina and Tony. However, 14 formerly eliminated players were waiting in the Edge of Extinction to jump back into the game.
Like most shows caught filming during the coronavirus pandemic, “Survivor” had to go remote on Wednesday’s episode. Probst kicked off the show from his garage in a homemade set. The final contestants virtually joined him later in the episode to find out who won.

It seems like only yesterday the 20 returning “Survivor” champions returned for an epic clash in “Winners at War,” but now we’ve already reached the Season 40 finale. Heading into Wednesday’s three-hour event, only five castaways remained in the running to win the $2 million prize: Ben Driebergen, Denise Stapley, Michele Fitzgerald, Sarah Lacina and Tony Vlachos. But there were 14 players living on the Edge of Extinction who were itching for their chance to return to the game: Natalie Anderson, Amber Mariano, Danni Boatwright, Ethan Zohn, Rob Mariano, Parvati Shallow, Yul Kwon, Wendell Holland, Adam Klein, Tyson Apostol, Sophie Clarke, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Jeremy Collins and Nick Wilson. The 20th contestant, Sandra Diaz-Twine, quit after being voted out on Day 16.

Most “Survivor” devotees are betting on Tony Vlachos to claim the title of Sole Survivor on the 40th season of the CBS show, “Winners at War.” The biggest argument made for predicting his ultimate victory on the three-hour finale this Wednesday, May 13? He is the only one of the 20 previous champs competing on this so-called “season on steroids” whose name has never been written down during a Tribal Council. He might be twitchy as an itchy squirrel sometimes, but he has shown off both his leadership skills, his physical prowess and endurance and even his social game.
That is why an overwhelming 62% voted in our Gold Derby poll for Tony to win it all and become just the second winner to win “Survivor” twice since Sandra Diaz-Twine, who left the season early after being blindsided with her own immunity idol and quit once she got to the Edge of Extinction.

Natalie Anderson is the richest woman on “Survivor: Winners at War,” at least in terms of fire tokens. Having collected a whopping 14 tokens since being voted out on Day 2, she now has several advantages going into the finale’s big re-entry challenge. As seen in last week’s penultimate episode, she bought three advantages for the upcoming challenge, a jar of peanut butter and a hidden Immunity Idol which she gave to Tyson Apostol just in case he won, having already purchased one for herself earlier. All of these are likely reasons why she is the definitive frontrunner to get back into the game in Wednesday’s “Survivor: Winners at War” finale.
Natalie has 4/9 odds of being the Edge of Extinction returnee, according to Gold Derby’s latest odds. In the opinion of our users, no one else is even close to being in that top position. Tyson is in the no.

Tony Vlachos is the only castaway of “Survivor: Winners of War” to not see his name written down even once during a Tribal Council vote — at least, so far. And, ever since the merge, he also has been pretty much large and in charge of who is saved and who is eliminated. The sometimes twitchy Sole Survivor from the Cagayan season of the CBS reality show has been also hugely entertaining on this 20th anniversary edition of the long-running show, whether eavesdropping on others in his so-called spy nest, briefly joyfully mistaking a disadvantage sent to him from the Edge of Extinction for an advantage or reacting to being pooped on by a bird.

Tony Vlachos, Sarah Lacina and Michele Fitzgerald are the leading candidates to win “Survivor: Winners at War,” as discussed in a new video recap with three Gold Derby superfans. Host Jeff Probst got personal during the first Tribal Council (which avoided the previous week’s chaotic strategizing and whispering) on Wednesday’s two-hour penultimate 13th episode of “Winners at War” when he asked the remaining seven castaways, all previous champs, “When the game is over, what does that do to your ability to trust, just in the world?” Ben Driebergen said he couldn’t even trust his wife after playing while Jeremy Collins, who participated in two past seasons, admitted that he didn’t believe some of his fellow firefighters.
In his post-show interview with Entertainment Weekly, Probst explained why they might have such lingering trust issues: “It speaks to the invoice that comes with any adventure that is based in reality and not fantasy. Just think through the basic premise of the show. You are abandoned with a group of strangers forced to work together to survive the jungle.

Last week on “Survivor: Winners at War,” the final 10 castaways seemingly divided into two groups of five, with Tony Vlachos, Sarah Lacina, Sophie Clarke, Ben Driebergen and Nick Wilson on one side and Jeremy Collins, Kim Spradlin-Wolfe, Michele Fitzgerald, Denise Stapley and Tyson Apostol on the other. Jeremy peaced out at tribal council thanks to his “safety without power” advantage, leaving his group at a numbers disadvantage they simply couldn’t overcome. Each week after an episode of “Survivor” has aired, host Jeff Probst allows Entertainment Weekly to ask him some burning questions about what transpired during the show. Given that this is an extra-special season pitting former winners from the past against each other and that the introduction of fire tokens as a kind of currency to buy advantages, food and comfort has influenced the game, matters can get complicated.
That might be why Jeff himself had to issue a correction after Wednesday’s episode about what he told EW last week. It turns out the immunity idols that Rob Mariano and Natalie Anderson bought with tokens before one of the dwellers on Edge of Extinction would have a chance to get back in the game weren’t voided after Tyson Apostel won the post-merge challenge.
