Exclusive: Industry vet Paul Davidson has been tapped to head up Idw Media’s entertainment division as Executive Vice President, overseeing all development and production. He replaces Lydia Antonini, who is stepping down as President to return to producing. Davidson begins on July 19.
“Entertainment is a key part of Idw’s strategy so we are very fortunate to have someone with Paul’s pedigree assume this key position,” said Idw CEO Ezra Rosensaft. “As an independent Producer, Paul worked with our team and a roster of talented creators in 2020 to help develop television and feature film properties, so I have no doubt that he will seamlessly step into this new role.”
As EVP, Davidson will be charged with continuing to grow the television division, expanding the scope of Idw’s content business into the feature film, podcast and gaming verticals, and finding new creative and business opportunities for the company...

Welcome to the new column “Comics Issues” where two Sound on Sight writers debate a important or controversial comics industry topic. First up, we discuss whether the DC New 52 was a successful initiative or not. Feel free to post your opinion in the comments below.
Pro: “The DC Comics New 52 was successful.”
Overall, I think the New 52 was a successful initiative for DC Comics. The new #1’s attracted a lot of new readers (including yours truly) and made titles like Action Comics and Batman, which seemed inaccessible with issue numbers in the three digits. Speaking of Batman, the New 52 has been a time of creative renaissance for the character and his family of titles from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s soon to be legendary run on the title to artistically interesting books like Gotham Academy and Grayson. Other highlights of the New 52, include Grant Morrison’s metafictional event comic...

Editors: Mark Doyle & Matt Humphreys
Publisher: DC Comics
Have you ever been in love? Head-over-heels, pop-songs-on-blast-turnt-down-for-what love? Sure, most have. You’ve probably even had that love turn sour. The bright light of joy that once warmed your heart turned black as coal and threatens every fibre of your being. Hopefully. most of you have never felt that. Though it isn’t as rare as we’d like. But what happens when that newfound hatred manifests itself in your spouse? If you’re the Joker, you plan your endgame and show the world that a lunatic scorned is nothing to be trifled with.
After last issue’s jaw-dropping finale, where readers are introduced to a Joker-ized Superman, this issue wastes no time giving the readers what they want. Tripping on fear toxin and getting pummeled by Superman,...

At Baltimore Comic Con, I got the opportunity to chat with up and coming comics writer Marguerite Bennett about her projects past, present, and future for companies including Marvel, DC, and Boom! We also discussed her mentor Scott Snyder (Batman, The Wake), Batman: The Animated Series, and her time at the University of Mary Washington, which happens to be the college I am currently attending.
SoS: What was the first comic you ever read? How old were you? What was the context?
Marguerite Bennett: This isn’t exactly a comic, but Batman: The Animated Series was my big hook into the Bat-universe. after that, my friend Travis Covey would show me single issues from things like X-Men and Spawn. They were always completely out of the arc they were a part of so I’d be six years old going through these pages with no concept of what was going on.

In comics news this week, Mark Doyle has been appointed the new Batman Group Editor at DC Comics, replacing Mike Marts. Marts has gone to work for Marvel as a result of DC’s announcement that they will be moving its New York office to Burbank, California in 2015. Doyle is currently a Vertigo editor who was most responsible for bringing Scott Snyder into DC after editing his American Vampire series, and also edits Snyder’s other Vertigo series, The Wake. Though Doyle is excited about the promotion, he will only be the editor for a year as he will not be moving to California in 2015.
Snyder is also pleased with the appointment, tweeting that “Gotham couldn’t be in better hands for Batman’s 75th”, referring to 2014 being Batman’s 75th anniversary since he first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939.

Shelly Bond is replacing Karen Berger as the new Executive Editor of the Vertigo imprint for DC Entertainment, joining Will Dennis (Group Editor) and Mark Doyle (Editor). “I’ve been incredibly lucky to have worked for many years with these three smart and talented editors. Shelly has been by my side since the beginning of Vertigo, so I couldn’t be happier about passing the baton to her,” Berger said in a statement. “She brings so much creativity, passion and professionalism to everything she edits with special note to the wildly successful Fables, which she launched and has overseen for over 10...
