It’s weird seeing a follow-up from a director who has made such a classic film yet nothing since. It’s even more weird that the film, American History X, isn’t something he’s proud of and tried to change his name to Humpty Dumpty on it. Odd, still, that Detachment, the new film from Tony Kaye, went pretty much unnoticed after festivals and went, instead, released to On Demand services and disappointing considering the talent within the film alone and the fact that it is, quite frankly, pretty brilliant. A film so packed with acting talent, melodramatic story, great music and hit-and-miss direction means that you have something of a separation with the audiences.

It’s a story we’ve seen dozens of times before in the likes of Dangerous Minds, Coach Carter and The Class – of a teacher arriving at a downtrodden inner-city school with the hope of turning the kids’ lives around – but prickly director Tony Kaye (American History X) manages to breathe new life into it with his refreshingly hard-edged, unsentimental approach.
An opening montage, mixing apparent verite footage with the musings of protagonist Henry Barthes (Adrien Brody), asks a simple question – why do people teach? Through a school-based drama that doubles as an urban nightmare, Kaye considers this question, and also musters up plenty of his own to boot.
Brody is the film’s Michelle Pfeiffer, the respected substitute teacher looking to save an ailing school at the behest of Principal Carol Dearden (Marcia Gay Harden), whose head rests on the chopping block. From the outset,...

Being a teacher is much more difficult than most would assume. It isn’t all about being a loved role model and getting summer vacations. If you think otherwise, spend a day in a city’s public school. Tony Kaye’s new film Detachment aims to bring problems in Amerca’s education system to light by bringing audiences into a nearly dystopian portrait of a school. Of course, this isn’t new territory for films. There’s a wide range of movies centered on teachers and troubled students, from Stand and Deliver to The Class. But Detachment is anything but conventional, trading a standard, hockey narrative for something seemingly scattershot. Carl Lund’s script centers around Henry (Adrien Brody), an emotionally tortured substitute teacher who’s called in to a take over a rowdy, disengaged classroom...

Tribeca: So how did Detachment come to you. What attracted you to the project? Adrien Brody: Well, there were a number of things that were very alluring about it. First of all, it's a beautifully written script by Carl Lund, and when I read it, it moved me to tears. And I thought the experience of working with Tony [Kaye, director of Detachment] would be fascinating - I'm always intrigued by working with people who are very creative and innovative and unpredictable, and Tony is all of that, a wonderful collaborator. He's very kind, and I really enjoyed that process. My father was a public school teacher, and I am a product of public schools in New York. I felt I understood quite a bit of the depths of the material, innately, and some of the problems that exist within the school system. And also, I attribute my good fortune and any successes...

The following is a reprint of our review from the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011.
Though it had flown mostly under the radar, cinephiles were pretty thrilled a few weeks ago when the Tribeca Film Festival announced the addition of “Detachment” to its lineup. Not only was the cast top notch but behind the director's chair was British provocateur Tony Kaye, the filmmaker behind the controversial “American History X,” a picture made over 12 years ago. In the interim, things have been tough for the notoriously difficult director and "Detachment" is only his third feature and first narrative film since 1998. "American History X" had its own infamously troubled history when star Edward Norton essentially took over the film, edited it on his own without the director, and Kaye subsequently made a gigantic stink in Hollywood, putting ridiculous ads in Variety and eventually tried to take his name off the film and replace...

We’ve seen some great things over the past few months for director Tony Kaye’s upcoming film, Detachment, led by Adrien Brody. A beautiful international poster arrived back in November with Brody looking pensive before a chalk board, followed by a great international trailer just before Christmas.

We got our first look at Adrien Brody’s next film, Detachment, when an international poster surfaced back in November, which instantly conjured up a sort of restrained beauty with a simple photograph of Brody deep in thought before a chalkboard.
A new French trailer for the film has been released online, via The Playlist, and it lives up to the beauty of the poster and a lot more too. Tony Kaye, director of American History X, is behind the camera for this, directing from Carl Lund’s debut script.

Adrien Brody has certainly had a pretty diverse career in his time, choosing roles in films as varied as Peter Jackson’s King Kong, Wes Anderson’s fantastic The Darjeeling Limited, and of course, most notably, Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, for which he won his Best Actor Academy Award, in a year that saw him up against Daniel Day-Lewis, Michael Caine, Nicolas Cage, and Jack Nicholson.
He’ll next be taking the lead in Detachment, alongside a terrific supporting cast, and KinoGallery (via Imp Awards) have got a lovely new French poster for the film, which has been getting a great reception at the film festivals it’s been screened at so far.

I think everyone will agree that 1998′s American History X is a powerhouse of a film. Yet, did you know that director Tony Kaye attempted to disown the film after a spat with star Edward Norton? Norton alledgedly was tampering with the film in the editing bay, which in turn, pissed Kaye off.
