Chicago – With a healthy dose of attitude, a dynamite lead singer and a predilection for time-honored rock ‘n’ roll, “Evol Walks” is a band that has rapidly emerged as a heavyweight contender. Now based in Los Angeles, Evol Walks has produced an Ep, earned plaudits from artists and fans around the world, and played across three continents. The band’s hard edge takes its inspiration from the giants of heavy music, from roots in AC/DC and Black Sabbath, as well as Led Zeppelin, Joan Jett, Stone Sour and Monster Magnet, plus gives it a modern tweak.
“The Fire” is featured on Evol Walks new Ep, “Our Time Is Now,” released on January 18th of this year, and produced by Erik Ron (Godsmack, Motionless in White, Sylar, New Years Day). It featured writing contributions from Jake Pitts (Black Veil Brides), Dan Jacobs and Travis Miguel (Atreyu) and Tim Henwood (The Superjesus,...

All right, I don't know what "negasonic" means. Or if it's even a word. It's been a long time since I've read my Grant Morrison (or listened to Monster Magnet), and Google is no help to us in situations like this, for obvious reasons. In part, Google is no help to us precisely because of the effect I've been thinking about since seeing Deadpool. Call it the meme-ification of culture, if you like; but not in a bad way, because on the balance I'd say that the meme-ification of culture is largely a good thing. I didn't love Deadpool (I didn't hate it either), but I could see fairly quickly why the film immediately became the current It Girl. (Pansexual Deadpool wouldn't mind my calling...

Stoner rock (or desert rock) originates from the early heavy metal scene with bands like Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult playing a pivotal role in its transformation. It was artists such as Kyuss, Sleep and Monster Magnet that officially brought the genre term to prominence in the 90’s, paving the way for the genre’s most successful export Queens Of The Stone Age in the 2000’s.
As good as the noughties were for stoner rock, this current decade has really witnessed the genre flourish into ever increasing heights of artistic merit. The retro sound that exemplifies much of the genre is still present along with some sonic experimentation, making the past five years a period of great growth for the scene.

With spoilers, we look at the questions raised and left behind by the new Deadpool movie...
In contrast to Marvel Studios’ tightly-wound movies, Fox’s X-Men franchise likes to play fast and loose with its material. What that means is that if you’ve just seen Deadpool, you might have a few questions about it. And we’ve tried to guess what they might be so that we can answer them in advance.
Fair warning, though: This is very spoilery. For both the comics and the movie. Only scroll past the image if you’re willing to have plot points explained to you rather than discover them yourself.
1. How does this movie connect to the continuity of his previous appearance?
The short version to this question is that it doesn’t. In fact, you could easily argue that Deadpool is taking place on its own island of continuity.

Deadpool's Negasonic Teenage Warhead meet Empire readers. Empire readers meet Negasonic Teenage Warhead. You’re going to get along famously. To add to Ryan Reynolds’ tweet a few months back introducing Deadpool’s new compadre, we have a new shot of the two of them together and up to minimum good.Named after a track by ‘90s gonzo rock contenders Monster Magnet and created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely in the comic-book run, Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s real name is Ellie Phimister. Her mutant powers may extend to telepathy, a skill she learnt under Emma Frost’s tutelage. If you think her codename is a little, well, out there, Kitty Pryde would probably agree. "Wow, we really have run out of names,” she jokes in one of the comics. Not, on this evidence, that you’d want to say that to her face. Newcomer Brianna Hildebrand plays Wade Wilson’s partner in crime,...

Ever since production on Deadpool began, we've gotten little tidbits of information on the Marvel film from 20th Century Fox starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth. The first photo showed off Deadpool in an alluring pose, Reynolds revealed the film is R-rated, and co-star Ed Skrein confirmed that he's playing the villain Ajax. And now we have another glimpse at the forthcoming comic book flick, and it reveals a character that comic book fans should be excited to see. Brianna Hildebrand plays Negasonic Teenage Warhead, a telepath with precognitive abilities, named after a song by Monster Magnet. Look now! Here's the new photo from Tim Miller's Deadpool from Ryan Reynolds' Twitter: Negasonic Teenage Wat-The-Shit?! pic.twitter.com/sUCS7u7BBR— Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) April 11, 2015 Deadpool is directed by visual effects veteran Tim Miller, making his feature directing debut, with a script from Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Deadpool doesn't really need a marketing team as long as Ryan Reynolds has Twitter with the lead in Fox's rated R take on Marvel Comic's favorite Merc with a Mouth sharing quite a lot of images from the movie over the last few weeks. Now, he's back with a set image featuring him in full costume with one of his supporting players Teenage Negasonic Warhead, played by newcomer Brianna Hildebrand. Negasonic Teenage Wat-The-Shit?! pic.twitter.com/sUCS7u7BBR — Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) April 11, 2015 Never really interacting with Deadpool in her short time on the printed page, Teenage Negasonic Warhead (named after the Monster Magnet song) was introduced, and swiftly done away with, in the pages of Grant Morrison's influential New X-Men run. A telepathic mutant with vast precognitive abilities, she was used sparingly since her first appearance, most notably as a psychic illusion in Joss Whedon's time on Astonishing X-Men.

Ryan Reynolds has been a nonstop source of Deadpool intel lately. The anti-heroic comic book movie recently started filming in Vancouver, B.C., and the actor has sent out a near constant stream of photos and tidbits over social media. And today is no different, as he has revealed our first look at Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Negasonic Teenage Wat-The-Shit?! pic.twitter.com/sUCS7u7BBR . Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) April 11, 2015 We recently learned that the character is indeed going to be in the movie, and that newcomer Brianna Hildebrand will play the goth-styled mutant. And by newcomer, we mean that Hildebrand has three credits listed on IMDb, including this one, and of the other two, neither has been released. The unusual name comes from a song by metal band Monster Magnet, and it.s the alter ego of Ellie Phimister. Compared to her appearance in the comics, this incarnation of the...

After years of being stuck in development hell, Deadpool is now miraculously coming together, and with production about to hit the ground running, that means it's in the final stages of its casting process. As things stand, the movie has a rather great ensemble that includes Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein and Gina Carano, but today news has come out that the production has added another actor to its ranks, with newcomer Brianna Hildebrand coming aboard to play a mutant with one of the best names ever. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that Hildebrand has joined the cast of Deadpool to play the role of Negasonic Teenage Warhead - a telepathic, precognitive, goth-styled mutant with a name inspired by a Monster Magnet song (who also happens to have one seriously dark arc in the comics). The source sadly doesn't have any information regarding how we ...

Genre fans will no doubt remember Monster Magnet for their memorable musical contributions to films like The Matrix, Urban Legend, Beowulf and Bride of Chucky, but this New Jersey-based unit is also one of the prime movers in the “stoner rock” movement – and nearly a quarter-century after their formation, the band's influence on hard rock and metal can still be heard from up-and-coming artists today. Conversely, much of Monster Magnet's own creative spark comes from the world of horror and science fiction, and they cite grindhouse cinema, classic sci-fi novels, comic books and the beloved B-movies of Roger Corman among their inspirations. Just one look at the supreme retro-style promotional art for their tenth album Last Patrol reveals this dedication... you can totally imagine this poster on display beneath a 42nd Street grindhouse marquee, say around 1981 or so: Last Patrol is also a callback to the band's psychedelic rock roots,...

For anybody who did not live through the peak of MTV’s Total Request Live, it’s difficult to understand just how important that show was to pop culture. Every day after school, Trl host Carson Daly would not only unveil the 10 most-requested videos of the day, but he would also interview movie stars, call his celebrity friends, and facilitate awkward exchanges between unlikely bedfellows. Before everybody cared about tween culture, Trl was the center of that universe.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Psychedelic Pill (Reprise)
A far better album than Young & Crazy Horse's shabby Americana from earlier this year, not so much because it's songs written by Neil (certainly nobody will be impressed by the rather feeble lyrics on display here) as that he stretches out and jams with the Horse. Really stretches out, as in tracks lasting 27:35, 16:48, 8:33, and 16:26 (along with five tracks in the three- to four-minute range). He quit drugs, but he didn't quit reaching for another state of mind; I'd even say that he may be using this music as his drug. The hypnotic trips he takes here make this his best new album in over twenty years, and one of his top five post-'70s albums. Pretty good for a guy who just celebrated his 67th birthday.
David Byrne & St. Vincent: Love This Giant (4Ad)
This could have been a style rip-off.

From the bizarre underground realm of Gypsy Punk Rock to the whiskey soaked badlands of the South I bring you a list of bands that I feel are not only underappreciated but sadly underrated. Rock and roll isn't dead. The following bands on this list have lived through the year 2000 era in which many have criticized the decline of the genre. Although nearly every band on this list has had a big hit or two, they've somehow always flown under the radar. Take note that I have not chosen indie bands or underground artists who have only made a name for themselves playing poetry guitar on the corner of grow-up avenue. These are real bands, many firmly established, but in the end still criminally underrated. #10. Monster Magnet Remember the song 'Space Lord'? That track was a five-minute...

One car journey soundtracked by Cult of Luna, Hang the Bastard and more. A job finding free parking. One disappointing meal in Wetherspoons, accompanied by more satisfactory beverages. A quick few in The Hatchet, which is heaving to bursting this evening, and looking noticeably metal; the acoustic artist out the back, no doubt thankful for the exposure that the gig in the 02 Academy has gained him this evening. One extensive queue.

Let me tell you a story…
Forward (Creative Process 0.0):
Ever hear a song on the radio or Pandora or Xm or whatever gosh darn music listening device you might use these days and think, “Wow, I would love to use that in a movie soundtrack”? Believe it or not that’s pretty much all I think about when I listen to a few tracks. I’ve developed a strange compulsion to create movie scenes based around popular music. Some would probably call it daydream listening but I think neurosis is more applicable when it comes to the frequency with which I do this.
So I started compiling play lists of songs that fit together into a meaningful story line. Typically I would come up with a common thread or a general plot line and come up with scenes to flesh out that plot line to form… well… a movie script of sorts.

I can’t say that the music on Dexter has ever particularly stood out to me. The musical scores do a great job of setting the tone for scenes, and I always expect to hear a Latin dance-friendly tune to be playing when the Pd has a bust to make at a Miami-area club. But the show doesn’t feature much popular, radio-type music because it really doesn’t lend itself to it — which is fine. That fact, however, was what led me to be perplexed when I read that star Michael C. Hall would be hitting the airwaves on...

You should always throw up your metal horns for Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf whenever you see him, but should you come across him today, make sure there's a little extra evil behind it, as it's his birthday. The voice, guitar and primary songwriting mind behind Monster Magnet is now 54 years old, and as his band's just-released new album Mastermind proves, the guy still has it.
Wyndorf founded Monster Magnet back in 1989 (they were originally called Dog of Mystery and then Airport '75 before they settled on their name), and their sludgy, druggy version of arena metal ended up being years ahead of its time. Their first album Spin of God became an instant underground classic (and earned them a major label contract), but it wasn't until their third album (1995's Dopes to Infinity) that they started to gain national attention and found the fullest version of their sound. There's no secret that the last season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" — which saw Bret Michaels score the victory over a truly excellent field — was one of the most fun shows on television. And it's also no secret that the current iteration of "The Apprentice" (which does not feature any famous people, just a bunch of down-on-their-luck business folk) is not very good at all (ratings have been roundly bad). But according to reports from Entertainment Weekly, a new season of "The Celebrity Apprentice" is just around the corner, and rumor has it that the cast will include La Toya Jackson, former "The View" co-host Star Jones and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" host Mark McGrath.
Even though there could be as many as nine more names added to the roster, fans should already be salivating, as all three of those people are wildly entertaining on TV. McGrath is an especially awesome case,...

In the wake of 80's week, I found myself contemplating the state of the modern teen comedy. After the end of John Hughes' stellar track record of teen-themed films, we haven't had much to take their place. Sure, we had Can't Hardly Wait and American Pie, Clueless and Ten Things I Hate About You, but it feels like the genre is still strangely empty. And then I remembered 2004's The Girl Next Door. It's not your conventional high school movie -- it's filled with gratuitous nudity, copious swearing, drug use, and all kinds of other fun stuff. It's one of those films that I feel oddly guilty about liking... no. Fuck that. I love this flick. I can't help myself.
The Girl Next Door is a simple boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl story, with a couple of twists thrown in. Taking place during the final days of high school, Matthew (Emile Hirsch...

Generally speaking, the best kinds of modern monster movies are the ones that don.t show all their cards at the beginning of the hand. They.re the ones that keep you wondering exactly what that shadowy mass will look like if it ever crawls out of the darkness. Easily compared to Cloverfield, Monsters is following the same tack by still, after three trailers, not giving the audience more than a quick peak at what their destroyer of worlds will look like. A SXSW darling, Monsters was picked up by Magnet back in March. Maybe the monster is a Space Lord (obligatory Monster Magnet joke). Now that the October 29th release is fast approaching, Magnet is ramping up the marketing, making sure that everyone knows that this movie is coming. This new trailer popped up over on Hulu so scope it out and prepare yourself to be taken over. Monsters...

The Helsinki Vampires are indeed back again, however they are trading their sleaze glam and their "Dead Cool" Goth Rock image for a new gritty metal edge. This time around, the act pushes aside completely the notion of being a romantically inspired act and takes up the complete mantle of power stage rockers. When the act made their first big splash in 2005 when skating legend Bam Margera directed the “Lost Boys” video, they were billed by many music magazines as “The Saviors of Gothic Rock”, a title that has never sat well with yours truly, any more than I would say Manson was “Goth’s Salvation”. Neither act has really spent any length of time wanting to further the music scene that their respective record producers felt they should be pigeon holed into. Admittedly however, The 69 Eyes had a campy fun charm that hooked U.S. fans instantly and with...
