Put a bunch of hormone-filled 13-year-old Jewish boys in a room and give them one wish and it would probably be having Nicki Minaj show up at a bar mitzvah ... and this weekend, that wish was granted. 13-year-old Matt Murstein's millionaire financier dad called in a few favors, and dropped a few shekels to get the "Anaconda" rapper to help the kid usher in adulthood Saturday night at the Pierre Hotel in NYC. We're told...

Patrick Ewing had some weird superstitions that he would follow before Every Knicks game ... so says former teammate John Starks. Starks says one of the most bizarre pre-game rituals that Ewing refused to break was a No-autograph policy until the game was over. "You could be on your death bed, he still wouldn't sign autographs before the games," Starks says. John -- who's now running a whole bunch of companies in his post-nba career (including a pizza biz,...

I’ve always found the Tribeca Film Festival’s program to be a bit dull, but one section the fest smartly programs each year is the Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Festival. This year, they open with what to this long suffering Knicks fan sounds like the greatest film of all time. They open April 17 with the gala premiere of the docu When The Garden Was Eden, a film about the Knicks championship teams of the early 70’s, the days of Walt “Clyde” Frazier, Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Cazzie Russell, Dick Barnett, and yeah, Phil Jackson. While Jackson is now the polished Zen Master who coached the La Lakers and Chicago Bulls to 11 titles and expected to come in and overhaul the Knicks roster, you should have seen him back then, long haired and gangly, when it was an adventure watching Jackson race down court...

Television legend Betty White was the target of this year’s Friars Club Roast, held in New York’s Sheraton Hotel.
From an eclectic dais that ranged from Matt Lauer, Liza Minelli, and Dick Cavett, to Dominic “Uncle Junior” Chianese, to The Office’s Oscar Nunez, to former New York star John Starks, to boxing great Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, to Best Picture The Artist’s Uggie the Dog, the event was up to its usual biting and merciless humor, poking fun at the guest of honor’s age and sexual proclivity.
Barbara Walters served as Roastmaster, marking the first time in Friars history that women were both host and subject. “Yesterday, I was talking to the President of the United States,” Walters said, referring to Barack Obama’s appearance on The View,...

John Starks, a player for the New York Knicks during the 90′s made an appearance in an Espn film. It is not important that you know what the film was about. It is only important that you hear John Starks tell you about a very important question he had at the Frito line. I mean… he probably said “free throw line,” but you just can’t be entirely sure about it. And, just to give you a sense of closure, yes. Dat dude did, in fact, just did dat. Thanks, Joe.

In the history of sports rivalries, few single players have ever embodied the spirit of villainy amongst an entire fan base like Reggie Miller did for devotees of the New York Knicks in the '90s. Miller, a shooting guard for the Indiana Pacers, was the bane of the Knicks' existence, constantly upending them (often on their home court in Madison Square Garden, no less) and knocking the most talented and promising Knicks teams since the Walt Frazier era out of the playoffs twice. But there was one particular game that will live on as one of the greatest performances in any sport in history, and it was played on this day in 1995.
During the first game of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Pacers fought a healthy game-long battle but found themselves down six points with just under 19 seconds to play. Miller flipped into another gear and hit a three-pointer...

While our Sundance home page is the place for all our coverage from Park City, here is a brief rundown of what's been going on during the last 24 hours, including a new photo gallery for the Catherine Keener-Amanda Peet dramedy "Please Give" and reviews of "Lucky," "The Freebie" and "Mother and Child."
Matt Singer got an unwelcome Paul Haggis vibe from Rodrigo Garcia's "Mother and Child," a multi-stranded drama starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Kerry Washington as a trio of women connected through pregnancy and adoption that Sony Classics will release in May. Here's an excerpt from his review, which can be found in full here:
The winner in the bunch is Naomi Watts who, in a terrific performance, plays Elizabeth, a ferociously competitive careerist starting a new job at a law firm run by Paul (Samuel L. Jackson). For Watts, Elizabeth offers an opportunity to...

One of the stranger stories to come out of last week's news cycle was the tale surrounding an episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which featured guest appearances by both rapper 50 Cent and legendary basketball play-by-play man Marv Albert. There was a report last week that Albert had a run-in with 50's entourage, who didn't recognize the hoops announcer but did think he was there to hassle the rapper. A tussle ensued, and a handful of obscenities and punches were thrown from both directions.
It's a pretty crazy story, except according to Albert, it never happened. The announcer told the Associated Press that all reports about the scuffle were false. Albert said he never came even vaguely close to 50 Cent or his crew the entire time he was at "Jimmy Kimmel Live." "I couldn't even tell you what the guy looked like or the security guard looked like," Albert told the...

Check out this post-hip-hop up-and-comer before he becomes the next big indie darling out of Brooklyn. Will Johnson is late for rehearsal. He runs out of his Fort Greene apartment and morphs into his alter ego -- Gordon Voidwell. You wouldn't notice a difference in the musician. He still has on his limited edition Nikes, his Cazal glasses, and a fade reminiscent of John Starks, but he will tell you something is different. He is prepping for the final show of his three-week residency at Pianos with his band Billll$. (Billll$ is made up of collaborator Guillermo Brown and a steady rotation of avant-garde musicians and friends). They have played three straight sold out shows garnering fans casual and critical alike. But today Voidwell is more excited than ever. He smiles and tells me, "I think...
