Break out the mince pies and hand me a glass of eggnog! In case some of you have been locked in a cupboard since October, or are a graphic designer, Christmas, like a speeding truck with its drunken driver asleep behind the wheel, is approaching full speed with headlights blazing. All over the western world we anxious shoppers are filling the malls and emptying our wallets, pausing only to munch on a festive turkey ‘n cranberry burger before launching ourselves once more into the breach. Soon we will all stagger home, tearful and loaded with useless crap only to discover that once more we have forgotten to buy sellotape and we will have to improvise with homemade flour and water glue to secure our wrapping paper. After a couple of strong drinks, we will shove our insecurely covered gifts under a leaning, shedding tree and try to forget what we...

I could not be more excited to see this film, the final product of a project that nerds who appreciate Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have been hearing about for years. On purpose I’ve been trying to avoid anything and everything about this movie but it’s been hard because it has been everywhere. An alien, Comic-Con, a road trip, Jason Bateman, the laundry list of good things brewing within this movie’s run time is just scrumptious.
So, if you live in the Phoenix area and can make it to a screening on March 15 then send me your name to Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com and I’ll get you entered to win a pair of passes to see this before everyone else.

Season 4 of the popular History Channel show takes place back on the Dalton Highway in Alaska. As an additional wrinkle to this year’s hauls, the drivers are forced to travel over frozen rivers and swamps “off-road” in order to reach two remote Alaskan towns, Bettles and Nuiqsut. Veteran truckers Hugh Rowland, Alex Debogorski, Jack Jessee, and Lisa Kelly all return for the fourth season. They are joined by newcomers Greg Boadwine and Ray Vellieux.
Most of the familiar storylines that have sustained the show over the first three years remain intact. There's a "dash for the cash", Lisa's further attempts to be taken seriously, the newbies and their first runs on the ice road, as well as the continuing saga of the nemeses Hugh and Alex. Throw in Lisa's epic journey to recover her horse (yes horse) and a few unexpected scenarios along the...

Ice Road Truckers has always been one of those shows that just missed me. Reality shows frequently have trouble getting the final experience to match up with their on paper sell, but Irt worked that problem in the opposite direction of most. When I first heard about the show, I couldn’t imagine the interest. Well, apart from a certain Nascar “maybe a truck will go in the drink” sort of interest. Amazingly, the show has delivered, and the ratings show that I’m not alone in thinking so.
Still, as I mentioned, the show didn’t completely hook me. The crew is taking things up a notch now with Ice Road Trucker Deadliest Roads, and it’s hard to deny that this one makes it difficult to look away. We’ve moved to a job hauling loads in the Himalayas, on roads where on average someone dies every 4.5 minutes.

When Discovery Channel introduced The Deadliest Catch they may have irreparably altered the path of reality television. For one, it was actually depicting reality—albeit one very few ever encounter—and in a way that compelled viewership. How did it do this? It introduced a tension that no other reality series had been able to create: an actual sense of danger. Fear Factor featured a series of gross-out stunts that were highly supervised, relying more on its contestants’ own irrational cowardice than any real danger. Survivor’s title seemed to hint at competitors dying off one by one, but really, in the worst case scenario someone might faint from heat exhaustion and be flown home. Everything was just a bunch of immature people collected in a house complaining about one another. There was never any sense of danger or importance. At the very least, The Deadliest Catch had crab fisherman...

Ice Road Truckers - DVD Review
I once had a job where it was my job to obtain truck freight.
As I made my way all across the Us I realized that everything that we get in this country is obtained by the trucking industry. Bottom line. From the keyboards that you and I write on, the chairs we sit in, the produce and food we eat, the clothes we wear, everything gets here by truck.
That’s why knowing this information makes for a good primer in understanding why Season Three of Ice Road Truckers is such a thrill to watch. While not necessarily family entertainment, some of these road dogs are a bit salty, the program continues to feed my...
