ReviewMohanlal and Meena play young parents to Prithviraj, who has also directed the film. Cris* Review contains a few spoilers Good things first. It is swell that Mohanlal willingly played dad to a grown-up son, a man in his 30s with a job and a girlfriend and a ponytail. Prithviraj, who plays the son and has directed the movie, has made every effort to make it clear that the dad, and the mom too – played by Meena – are really too young. Right from the titles to the end of the film. But the film, which offers some enjoyable moments and an interesting storyline, slips and falls too many times. Bro Daddy has too many bumps to cross on the way to reach a good place. Mohanlal, in his bearded form of the present, first appears at the end of an ad about his steel bar plant (after a dig at...

OpinionThe Malayalam show with actor Annie as the host regularly shames female guests for not being the 'good homemaker'.Neelima MenonBetween 1993 to 1996, Annie has acted in 16 films, which were all largely middling comic entertainers. She soon got married to director Shaji Kailas and rechristened herself as Chithra Shaji Kailas, bidding adieu to the film world. In 2015, Annie made her TV debut as the host of a cookery show Annie’s Kitchen, which has her dishing out a recipe twice a week, and also includes a section where she interviews a celebrity from the field of cinema, TV, art and politics. For someone who has worked in an industry where men call the shots, one would think a female actor would be less tolerant to the patriarchy prevalent in society. If one were to analyse Annie’s celluloid roles, they have always played obeisance to the hero. Even in her lone noteworthy outing,...

CrisFor a funny conversation at the dining table, a tit for tat in the kitchen, a word of advice and confessions, film scripts place next to the central characters, a sibling or else a friend. Most of these friend and sibling characters are crucial when there is a story to be built or a point to be made, but slowly fade into the background and don't take the attention away from the heroes and heroines they are so attached to. The most expensive Mollywood movie ever made, the historical epic Pazhassi Raja has been the big Diwali hit in Kerala and elsewhere this weekend, with over 500 prints produced. Starring Mammootty in the title role, the film tells the tragic tale of the epic rebellion of Pazhassi Raja, an early king of Kerala at the end of the 18th century, who led an army of Nairs and Kurichiyas, armed with little more than swords and bows and arrows, who fought the British to a standstill for more than ten years in the forests of the south. The movie has been compared to recent Chinese-made epics such as Hero or Red Cliff. The film opens with a narration from Shahrukh Khan in the Hindi version, which the great man provided for free as he comes from a family of freedom fighters and wanted to support the project.
