As athlete an athlete at the University of Michigan, he earned a record
12 letters. He quarterbacked the football team to the 1948 national
championship, and was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in
1994. He also coached football at Nebraska (1956), Cal (1957-1959),
Illinois (1960-1966) and Miami-FL (1973). He later became executive
director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
