Luca Raele was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Acclaimed as one of the
premier clarinetists of Brazil, he is also regarded as an accomplished
composer, pianist and arranger. Since graduating in 1985 from Sao Paulo
University with a degree in Music, he has performed extensively with
chamber-music groups and popular instrumental bands, as guest-artist or
member, and as a member of two of the most important orchestras in
Brazil - the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra and the Jazz Symphony
Orchestra. In 1987 ( long before similar attempts in the USA or Europe
), Raele and a group of four friends created Nouvelle Cuisine, a
quintet dedicated to revisiting jazz-standards, old and new, and
Brazilian songs, creating unconventional arrangements that approached
true re-compositions of the original harmonic/melodic material, making
live the cross generational appeal inherent in the 'standard'
construction ( thus echoing the methods and style of the so called
"Third Stream" and "Cool Jazz" of the 1950's ). The originality and
importance of the work of Nouvelle Cuisine, heard in live performances
throughout the 1990's and on five CDs ( released through Warner Music
and other independent labels ), earned the group some of Brazil's most
important music awards. Since 1991, Raele joins in another quintet to
provide a medium for compositional and technical experimentation.
Consisting exclusively of clarinets, the group looked at its self
imposed mandate with anticipation and humor - its very name, Sujeito a
Guincho, being a Portuguese "no parking" sign turned into "double
entendre": automobiles 'subject to be towed' and clarinets 'subject to
squeaking'. It was in this context that Raele could develop his
conception of what was to become his trademark as arranger and
composer: the blurring of edges between popular, classical and
contemporary music, in such a way that virtually any procedure,
historical or experimental, could be borrowed, adapted, twisted or
created to achieve results immediately recognizable as his own. Over
the course of the decade and into the new millennium, Sujeito a Guincho
has been recognized internationally for its significant contributions
to the vocabulary and literature of the clarinet and has been invited
to participate in the International Clarinetfest ( based in the US ) in
1997,1998 and 2001. In 2005, with guest singer Monica Salmaso, the
group performed in Washington and Miami. In 2008, in Moscow. With his
bands, and as guest chamber-musician, Luca Raele has been continually
performing in all of Brazil's most important Opera Houses and Concert
Halls, in all state-capitals and major cities. In 2004 was invited by
Claudio Puntin to take part in the World Clarinet Quartet(with Gabriele
Mirabassi, Paulo Sergio Santos and Puntin) for its appearance at the
Traumzeit Jazz Festival in Duisburg, Germany. In partnership with
others, YB, an independent label, was created in 1992, dedicated to the
widespread distribution of Brazilian classics and the work and sound of
new artists. With YB, created following soundtracks:" Redentor" ," A
Mulher do Meu Amigo", "A Mulher Invisivel", for director Claudio
Torres, and participated as composer of "Alice", original HBO series.
