Elena Rybakina is out of the 2023 World Tennis League after two days of action, and she'll now face a race against time ahead of the 2024 Wta season.
Rybakina has had some unfortunate luck with sicknesses in the past, as her 2023 Roland Garros campaign got completely derailed by one. She played very well at the event and looked primed for a deep run, but then suddenly got sick and had to withdraw.
It was a bad one, as she spent days in bed before finally being able to get up. The sickness drained her for future events, so let's hope that's not the case now, as once again, she withdrew from a tournament due to sickness.
The event announced Rybakina's withdrawal at the same time when the daily schedule came out with the reason named sickness.
Veteran Vera Zvonareva will replace the Kazakhstani player for the rest of the event, though...

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula once again played doubles together throughout the 2023 Wta season, and they had a pretty good season earning a nomination for the Wta Doubles Team of the Year award.
This pairing is not one that we'll be seeing forever, which is something that both alluded to this year, but for much of this year, they still played together. We'll see if that remains for next year, but this year was a pretty strong season for the Americans, who were once again one of the best doubles teams in the world.
They played together at the Wta Finals recently, though they failed to secure a spot in the semi-final of the event. That concluded their year, and we don't know whether they'll continue next year, though reports would say they will. We'll have to wait until the Australian Open to see.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula finally finished their last round-robin doubles match at the 2023 Wta Finals, but it was a losing effort.
One day after crashing out from the Wta Finals in singles, Coco Gauff is now out of the doubles as well. She shared the loss today with the person who beat her yesterday - Jessica Pegula and it was unfortunate.
This match started a couple of days ago but was abandoned due to rain, only to be completed today. It was a strange match from start to finish. It literally opened with a bat stopping play , only for rain to stop play altogether after the first set.
Pegula and Gauff won that opening set 6-3, but then, upon returning, it was their opponents who played better. Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund broke first, taking a 4-2 lead, but then lost their serve, giving their opponents another chance.

Not only do this year's Wta Finals have terrible weather, but they also have disturbing bats that interrupt play.
Yes, as if everything wasn't enough this week, there are animals stepping in and further delaying play in Cancun. This Wta Finals looked like a disaster from the very moment they were announced, and nothing that happened so far at the event dispelled that.
So let's remove the obvious ones, such as the court not being finished in time, players not being able to practice on the court on which they'll play, and the weather, which has been hurricane-lite, kind of.
We barely saw any sun this week in Cancun, but there was a lot of rain. And wind, plenty of wind. Conditions that are not fit for outdoor tennis which caused the matches to be suspended multiple times, some even 4-5 times.

The championship match for the 2023 Wta Finals has now been pushed to Monday in order to allow time to complete semifinal matches in singles and doubles on Sunday.
Saturday was the worst day in terms of inclement weather that interrupted the first single semifinal between Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff on two occasions, lasting not more than 15 minutes. The two Americans had actually started their match at least an hour late.
Pegula weathered the storm by demolishing Gauff and keeping her unblemished campaign intact to reach the final. She is now one match win away from pocketing the $3,024,000 prize money as an undefeated champion.
Tennis fans and players have voiced their complaints and annoyance at the state of the tournament , ranging from poor scheduling to the court surface. Former players who turned pundits believe there were at least two viable places to stage this event than hosting it in a...

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are facing a unique situation at the 2023 Wta Finals as the two may have to play three matches in one day.
The two highest-ranked Americans on the Wta Tour qualified for the year-end competition in both singles and doubles, and that alone possesses a lot of challenges for the two talented players.
While other participants were guaranteed to play at least three matches at the 2023 Wta Finals , Gauff and Pegula knew they will play at leats six, and that number increased to seven after they both succeeded in the round-robin stage in singles.
Now, the two are close to advancing also in doubles . To do that, they need to win their last round-robin match against Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund, a match that was moved from Friday to Saturday due to rain, already after one set of play, with the Americans leading.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula still have a chance to play in the 2023 Wta Finals semifinals, but they need to overcome the last obstacle.
Ahead of their last Wta Finals match in doubles, the American duo had a chance to advance despite losing their first two matches . It's a rare situation, but the first-seeded team was ready to capitalize on their chance.
On top of that, after Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe defeated Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 6-5, 7-5, Gauff and Pegula once again had their destiny in their own hands.
All they needed to do was beat Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund , ideally in two sets. In case they don't win in two sets, every game counts, and that's why their start of the match was so important.
The Americans got an early break, leading 3-0, with two more break points to go into a two-break lead. However,...

The number of tennis fans in the stands during a doubles match at the 2023 Wta Finals could have been counted on one hand.
A video circulating on social media of the match featuring Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe taking on the pair of Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva showed an incredibly low turnout by the locals in Cancun, with Portuguese journalist Jose Morgado asserting that a paltry number of 10 fans were there.
Even though doubles tennis doesn't quite bring in numbers parallel to singles matches, it was quite alarming for a matchup that less than two months ago graced the courts of New York in the US Open doubles final. Fans were completely dismayed.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula still have a chance to reach the semifinals at the year-end Wta tournament despite losing their first two matches.
The 2023 Wta Finals have been a mixed experience for the American duo so far. Last year, both Pegula and Gauff went winless at the Wta Finals in both singles and doubles .
This year, the start has been much better for both, even though that applies only to singles. While Pegula won both of her singles matches and secured the spot in the semifinals, Gauff won her opener, and still has a chance to make it to the Final Four.
However, in the doubles, it's a very similar story to last year's tournament. First, the duo lost to Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe 6–7(2), 3–6, before also losing to Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova 6–3, 5–7, 6–10.

The 2023 Jiangxi Open will be played in the industrialized city of Nanchang from October 16th through 22nd, and the draw for this year's event has been released.
This Wta 250 event offers the lower-ranked players a chance to lift a Wta title. But there are plenty of experienced heads in the 32-player field featuring three Top 30 players who could halt that dream. In the past, Chinese players have enjoyed massive success at the tournament from the days when it was contested at the 125K level.
Rebecca Peterson is the only foreign player to walk away with the trophy from Nanchang back in 2019 when she beat Elena Rybakina. But it appears the Swede is nursing an injury, having not played since the US Open over a month ago, so we are guaranteed a new champion.
The top seed is Beatriz Haddad Maia who will be expected to charge past Japan's Nao Hibino in her opener.

The 2023 Ningbo Open will be held from September 25th to 30th, and the draw for the event was released.

A squirrel interrupted a women's doubles match on Saturday night at the US Open forcing the chair umpire to call for the point to be replayed.
The bizarre scene happened on Court 5 in a second-round doubles match featuring the team of Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva playing against the Belgian duo of Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer . And it happened at a crucial juncture in the match.
Laura Siegmund and Vera Zvonareva had lost the first set 7-6, but serving up a break in the second set, they were behind in the third game, when a squirrel intercepted midway through a rally which Zvonareva had immaculately finished off with a deft touch at the net only for the point to be docked off.

Simona Halep won't be playing at the 2023 US Open as she was automatically withdrawn from the event as a suspended player.
It's coming up to exactly one year since Simona Halep last stood on a tennis court. It was August 29th, 2022, when last played, and it was a round-one match against Daria Snigur at the US Open. She shockingly lost that match in three sets, but an even bigger shock was incoming.
Halep provided samples after that match, samples that ultimately were positive for a banned substance, and she was provisionally banned from the sport. It was a shock to Halep and all those who knew her , considering how seriously she takes her career.
Fast forward to a year later, Halep was automatically withdrawn from the event as she was still provisionally suspended. It's been a whole year with no resolution for Halep as she tries to clear her name and save her legacy.

Anatasia Pavlyuchenkova won't be playing at the 2023 Prague Open in the Czech Republic after not being able to enter the country.
News about a Russian player being denied entry into the Czech Republic quickly made rounds on social media. The reason is rather simple - Russians and Belarusians are not permitted to take part in sporting events on the soil of the Czech Republic in response to the Invasion of Ukraine.
It was a blow to a few players from those countries that were officially on the entry list for the Wta 250 event, and one of those is Pavlyuchenkova. She had hoped to play at the event, but she won't after being denied entry into the country, which she confirmed on social media.

Russian and Belarusian players won't be able to take part in next week's Prague Open , as confirmed by the organizers of the event on Friday.
The Wta 250 event has been going on for over a decade now and mostly saw native Czech players dominate it. It was played on clay for many years but shifted to hard courts recently, which allowed some players to score deep runs.
Anastasia Potapova, for example, played in the final last year, but the Russian won't be able to take part this year as the country banned all players from Russia and Belarus from attending. AP news is reporting that the event organizers confirmed the news on Friday after reports of the country not allowing a Russian player to enter it.
There weren't any reports as to which player wasn't allowed entry, but in total, four players will be barred from playing at the event.

Former World No. 2 on the Wta Tour, Vera Zvonareva was deported from Poland on Saturday after she was denied entry to the country.
The Wta has another problem on its hands, and this one will be tricky to handle. The Tour has been dealing with some tricky situations lately, starting with the news of Saudi Arabia wanting to buy into the sport. Wta Chief Steve Simon denied any talks with the country even though reports indicated that contact was established.
Besides that and the ongoing Ukraine War situation, the Wta now has to deal with countries actively turning players away. Longtime Russian pro Vera Zvonareva was recently denied entry into Poland, where she hoped to play at the Poland Open next week.
The Ministry of Defence explained the decision as one of public safety, basically using language that described Zvonareva as a threat to safety in Poland which is rather laughable.

Russian pro tennis player Vera Zvonareva was blocked from entering Poland to compete at the 2023 Poland Open .
Vera Zvonareva is a rather familiar name for most tennis fans because the Russian player has been a professional player on the Wta Tour for many years. She's been quite good for most of that and she's still actively competing albeit not on the same level as before.
She was supposed to play at the Poland Open but she won't because she was blocked from entering the country. You don't have to think too hard to understand why as it's all tied to her being a Russian national. Poland has been a fierce ally of Ukraine ever since Russia invaded the country.
Much of that has to do with Poland's own history with Russia but they also shared a border with Russia so in some ways that drastic escalation of tensions is a security risk to the country.

Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff lost already in the third round of the 2023 Wimbledon doubles tournament to Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund.
The highest-ranked American duo on the Wta Tour had a unique chance to take over the World No. 1 spot after the current No. 1 team, Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, withdrew from the event due to Krejcikova's injury .
It would be Pegula, who leads her younger colleague by 90 points, who would become the new World No. 1 if the pairing lifted the trophy. However, despite a successful start to their World No. 1 story , it ended earlier than expected.
In the first two rounds, the Americans had to fight in three sets, and taking on Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund, the two had reasons to be worried as a very experienced duo is capable of causing upsets.

Aryna Sabalenka made her start on grass with a very impressive showing taking down Vera Zvonareva at the 2023 Berlin Open .
It's been a while since we last saw Sabalenka on a tennis court. The Belarusian last played at Roland Garros where she choked a lead in the final set sending Muchova to her maiden grand slam final . A return to grass is something Sabalenka was looking forward her due to her previous experiences on the surface.
She stood in the Wimbledon semi-final in 2021 but couldn't play last year due to the ban. This year she'll be making a return to Wimbledon after the ban was lifted. She had some minor trouble with her visa but that too has been resolved.
This match was one where she was heavily favoured as both the better player and the much younger player. Zvonareva has been a very solid player in recent years though...

After two weeks of fierce tennis and tense rain delays, Novak Djokovic and Samantha Stosur emerged from the 2011 Us Open bearing hard-earned trophies. Whereas all eyes were on Serena Williams rather than Stosur in the women’s field, Djokovic, as the newly minted World No. 1, was under immense pressure to perform well. Here’s how things went down during a very dramatic tournament.
With crisp groundstrokes and flawless movement, the Djoker has always been a joy to watch, but eighteen months ago he was a distant World No. 3 renowned for retiring-mid match due to fatigue or cramping. Improved physical conditioning helped him rise up and contend with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but it has been his attitude which has helped his steal the No. 1 ranking. His new-found confidence was on display during his semi-final tussle with Federer. Down a match point in the fifth set, Djokovic blasted back a service-return winner,...

Due to heavy rainfall in New York city yesterday, all scheduled matches were cancelled so today the fourth concludes up and the quarter-finals begin. The year’s final Grand Slam, situated in the hectic Flushing Meadows grounds, has seen the “big four” male players – Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray – sail through the draw smoothly, while upsets and withdrawals have littered the women’s field.
Djokovic has been impressive playing in his first slam as the World No. 1. This season, the Djoker has proved extra pressure that comes from heightened expectations is no problem, winning his first 43 matches of 2011 and compiling an impressive record of 61 wins and just one loss. Djokovic whizzed through his four matches without losing a set, his only challenge coming from the unorthodox Ukrainian Alexander Doglopolov who stretched him in a 31 point first set tie-break before going down 7-6, 6-4, 6-2.
