Barbara Cohen is a gifted composer, multi-instrumentalist and
singer/songwriter whose work expertly embraces a variety of musical
genres-from folk and roots rock to trip-hop, electronica and world
music.
Her career as a recording artist includes co-founding the Virgin
Records' band, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, collaborating with England's
rave luminaries, Orbital, singing lead vocals for the French
experimental duo, Air and most recently on the Brian Reitzl and Alex
Heffes score for Warner Bros'
Red Riding Hood (2011), as well
as releasing several critically acclaimed solo albums.
Cohen's ability to effectively blend disparate musical elements extends
to her scores for film and television. These range from the ambient
guitar and charango music for the 2009 Emmy- nominated PBS documentary,
The Judge and the General (2008),
to the whimsical horn and mellotron arrangement for the film,
American Shopper (2007); from
the dream-like, cabaret-influenced score for the Cuban feature,
Habana Eva (2010), to the evocative
and haunting arrangement for the MTV film,
Pedro (2008).
Cohen's songs have also been featured on film and television shows,
including
Brokedown Palace (1999) for Fox
Pictures, director Michael Radford's
Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000)
and the NBC primetime series Lipstick Jungle and Third Watch.
Recognized in the industry for both her scoring and songwriting talent,
her awards include admittance to the prestigious BMI Conducting
Workshop, a Sundance Film Composer Lab Fellowship and the Minnesota
State Arts Board Fellowship Grant for Artistry and Composition.
