10. The Sopranos (1999–2007)
Ruthless, brutal, and merciless, but mob bosses are people, too — and their lifestyle takes a heavy toll on their mental health. An infamous New Jersey gangster seeks help and relays the events of his personal and professional life to his counselor, gripping you from the pilot episode with his bloody honest revelations and humanity.
You can watch The Sopranos on Hulu and Prime Video.
9. Supernatural (2005–2020)
The Winchesters are not only decent rifles but also great monster hunters. Supernatural follows two brothers who are roaming the US in their car searching for (you guessed it) supernatural threats to exterminate. From the first episode, you become invested in their search for their father and determination to help people.
You can watch Supernatural on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.
8. The X-Files (1993–2018)
Speaking of the supernatural and unexplainable, The X-Files knows all about it. The show’s pilot immediately sets it up...

Like many who think they are leaving their hometown behind in a cloud of dust, Dexter (Zach Green) has found himself returning, somewhat with his proverbial tail between his legs. His big dreams of a indie film career in Hollywood have amounted to little more than directing a porn under a pseudonym. When he runs into his old high school friend Rex (Devin O'Rourke), their very different paths are temporarily converged when they decide to take a trip to the desert, to a place that for Dex, was inspirational, and for Rex, means possibly finding aliens. An alien conspiracy, you say? In the California desert? Not an original concept, perhaps, but Foil is more about poking gentle fun at familiar ideas and tropes, at a...

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars was the first time that George Lucas trusted someone with his precious IP for another on-screen project. It was also one of those rare instances at the time when a live-action project received an animated spinoff. Tartakovsky’s little Cartoon Network project worked out pretty well for Lucas & Co. who suffered a setback from the mixed receptions for their prequel trilogy.
Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars
The Clone Wars was mentioned once in the first Star Wars film and took place between the events of the prequel trilogy films, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Interestingly, Tartakovsky released the animated series in between these two films.

Genndy Tartakovsky says all animators are not good enough with their work like him. In a recent interview, Tartakovsky gave a few pointers on why animators end up coming nowhere near him in their animated projects. Coming from the Unicorn: Warriors Eternal creator, who has explored the field for nearly three decades, these pointers make for a great lesson in animation.

Cobra Kai season 6: Netflix announces premiere dates for 15 episode, 3 part conclusion to the series
Production on the sixth and final season of the hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, a continuation of the Karate Kid film franchise, was delayed several months due to the writers and actors strikes last year – but the extended wait is going to be worth it, because Netflix has just announced that the show is wrapping up with a 15 episode season (previous seasons consisted of 10 episodes), and they’re splitting the episodes up to make it a three part event! As they put it, “The end of a legacy… deserves a Grand Finale.” They’ve also revealed premiere dates: Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 1 premieres July 18, 2024. Part 2 premieres November 28, 2024. The Finale Event comes in 2025.
I’m hyped to finally have premiere dates for most of the episodes, because this show has become one of my all-time favorites over the course of the previous five seasons. I grew up on the Karate Kid movies and always enjoyed them,...

Fans of Dexter will agree that Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra Morgan deserved better than her tragic fate in the series. Carpenter originally wanted Debra to die at the end of the series especially due to all the guilt from her and her brother’s actions. However, she was devastated by how the show actually executed her death in the last episode of the final season, Remembering the Monsters?.

Carpenter revealed that the scene made her realize that Dexter’s character was not the neat monster depicted in the show, but rather a very sick man in need of help. Michael C. Hall and Carpenter returned to their roles as the Morgan siblings in the standalone miniseries, Dexter: New Blood.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the pioneer directors of our times, whose movies transcend our general perception. And among all his movies, the Unbreakable trilogy – Unbreakable (2000), Split (2017), and Glass (2019), are three movies that have weaved a story beyond comprehension. With intricate plot points and details, the trilogy is one of Shyamalan’s very best works to date.

10. Patrick Jane from The Mentalist
While the main character of his story, like many here, Patrick Jane is no classic hero. He’s obsessed with his own mission, puts his moral beliefs above others’ comfort, breaks the law on daily basis, and can kill or torture the people he personally finds guilty. Daryl Dixon wasn’t even supposed to become a long-staying character of The Walking Dead. "This foil is holding you back" Cranked Up Films has revealed an official trailer for a very low budget indie film titled Foil, a wacky UFO comedy from filmmaker Zach Green, co-written by Green and writer Devin O'Rourke. This premiered at Dances with Film Festival last year, and will be out on VOD this May. Here's the pitch: An unusual piece of foil with potential alien origin causes a rift between two former best friends camping in the California desert. Described as a sci-fi buddy comedy following two friends, Rex and Dexter, who are hoping to reconnect. They soon realize that their intentions for the camping weekend are at odds. Dexter, a failed filmmaker, hopes to harness a fabled vortex in the area to inspire a movie. Silence… Can You Hear It?, the first film in the series was an easy watch, if not the best. Director Aban Bharucha Deohans in the first film did not divert much from the plot, which made the movie watchable. The same director has now come back with a second film in the series that brings back the same old cops from the first film. Silence 2 is about a shootout at a bar, as the title suggests, which leads to many revelations as the investigation begins.
Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout is a two-hour, twenty-two-minute film. I’m not sure what the director was thinking but nothing in the film justifies this runtime. The movie begins with Acp Avinash Verma, Ips, and his team, the Special Crime Unit, being called to investigate a shootout that happened at a local bar named Night Owl, and one of the...

Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

"Futurama" is, at least on one level, a workplace show. The main characters all met because they are co-workers at Planet Express, an interplanetary delivery company. Planet Express, however, is more of a background setting and an excuse to have the characters organically occupy the same space. "Futurama" stories either tend to reach deep into weird sci-fi or involve the characters' personal lives. Plots rarely surround the business and its inner workings.
The biggest reminder that "Futurama" does indeed take place in an office is the presence of Hermes Conrad (Phil Lamarr), the company bureaucrat. Hermes takes care of all the paperwork and accounting and does so with gusto. He's a freewheeling limbo champion who is also weirdly fastidious and obsessed with red tape and organization. In the episode "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back", Hermes sings an upbeat calypso number about how great it is to be a bureaucrat.

This week’s 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Leo Woodall. Following his role as Tom Hollander’s pretend-nephew Jack in The White Lotus Season 2, Woodall landed a lead role in One Day, the Netflix series adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel of the same name.
Woodall tells us how he learned he was auditioning while on The White Lotus set, so immediately watched One Day‘s previous movie adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and read the book.
In One Day, he stars as Dexter, a privileged student who befriends Emma (Ambika Mod) at University. Over the ensuing years, we meet Dexter and Emma on the same day annually—July 15th—as Emma struggles to find fulfilling work and Dexter goes somewhat off the rails. The ebb and flow of their friendship and romance creates a decades-long ‘will they-won’t they’ layered with a deeply nostalgic soundtrack and settings.

Leo Woodall first came to prominence when he featured in season two of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” In that series, he played the, uh, “nephew” of Tom Hollander‘s character and made quite a splash in the role. Now, Woodall has gone from supporting player to leading man with Netflix’s new miniseries, “One Day.”
Adapted from David Nicholl‘s 2009 book of the same name (and the second adaptation overall after the much-maligned 2011 Anne Hathaway movie), “One Day” follows Woodall and “This is Going to Hurt” star Ambika Mod as two students (Dexter and Emma) who meet on graduation night. That chance meeting sparks an entwined relationship that encompasses friendship and lovers across a 20-year period as they continually meet on various July 15ths.
The result is a swooning, epic romance that hinges on the charisma of its two leads. Thankfully, both Woodall and Mod are up to the task.

The 2011 film adaptation of David Nichols‘ novel “One Day” starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was met with decidedly average notices at best. However, Netflix’s new adaptation has corrected that misstep and the limited series has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and acclaim from all corners.
This new editions showcases “This is Going to Hurt” breakout star Ambika Mod in the Hathaway role (Emma) while “The White Lotus'” Leo Woodall takes up the Sturgess mantle (Dexter). Emma and Dexter meet by chance on the night of graduating from university and the next day they part ways. However, their relationship then charts years as their fates are tied together. Both stars excel here and their chemistry propels the series to soaring heights while creator and writer Nicole Taylor, who wrote the 2018 Jessie Buckley movie “Wild Rose,” masterfully presides over proceedings, hence the rave reviews.

Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine’s Boys State and Girls State have carved out an appealing niche by asking the provocative question, “What would government be like if teenage boys or teenage girls were in charge?”
Erasing the confines of gender binary and reality, Carina Mia Wong and Alex Simmons’ We Can Be Heroes works as a companion text by asking, “What would an alternate world be like if it could be wholly reimagined by teenagers?”
All three documentaries are explorations of power, opportunities to see the best (and occasionally worst) of what might happen when an ascending generation takes on its destined roles as leaders, learners, heroes and villains.

Jeff Daniels as eternally glum police chief Del Harris returns for a widening murder conspiracy in the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice, which dropped Monday.
After the sudden, mysterious death of a former police officer in Pennsylvania’s rust belt in the rookie season is not quite solved by Harris, to say the least, the second-season trailer for American Rust: Broken Justice returns to the fictional town of Buell, where a compromised Del and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) try to rebuild their lives.
That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.
The fateful wrench from the first-season finale cover-up surfaces, as does Del fretting over how to protect the murder suspect and son of his sometimes girlfriend Grace.

That’s until the trailer reveals a series of unrelated murders that may add up to a much larger conspiracy closing in on a tight-knit town. “We never really do move on, do we?” Del questions at one point.

5 Dexter’s Laboratory Oh, Dexter, you self-proclaimed boy genius with a secret lab that your sister just can’t seem to stay out of. Dexter’s Laboratory was the kind of show that made us all wish we had a few beakers and Bunsen burners to mess around with. And let’s not forget the sibling spats that were more intense than a chemical reaction gone wrong. It was quirky, it was fun, and it was relatable on so many levels. With four seasons of scientific mishaps and a sister who could give any lab security system a run for its money, Dexter’s...

The number of actors the Netflix TV series Cobra Kai has brought back to reprise their characters from the Karate Kid films has been very impressive. Not only do you have Ralph Macchio and William Zabka back as Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence, but there’s also Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith as villains John Kreese and Terry Silver, Yuji Okumoto and Sean Kanan as villains-turned-allies Chozen Toguchi and Mike Barnes; Ron Thomas, Rob Garrison, and Tony O’Dell as Johnny’s former Cobra Kai buddies; and appearances by Elisabeth Shue as Ali Mills, Tamlyn Tomita as Kumiko, and Robyn Lively as Jessica Andrews. They even brought Traci Toguchi back as Yuna, the “Girl Bell Ringer” she played in The Karate Kid Part II. But one actor who might not be returning from the films is Hilary Swank, who played Julie Pierce in the 1994 film The Next Karate Kid.

For a great many actors, getting on a long-running TV show is the dream. Steady work is hard to come by as an actor, and network television is one of the best ways to find such work. Actor T.J. Thyne found himself in precisely that situation playing Jack Hodgins on Fox's "Bones." For 12 seasons, Thyne got to bring the forensic entomologist to life, but in taking the job, the actor put himself in precisely the situation he had been avoiding for years.
Speaking with Oh No They Didn't! in 2007, just a couple of seasons into the show's run on Fox, Thyne was asked about playing the same character for so many episodes for multiple years. In response, he explained that he had previously resisted such things, because he didn't want to get stuck doing the same thing for years on end. But in this case, it proved to be the right situation for him.

Note: This article contains major spoilers for "One Day."
In 2011, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess starred in a romantic drama called "One Day," about two friends who meet up on July 15 every year for 20 years, slowly falling in love in the process. While this may sound like the rosier version of 1978's "Same Time, Next Year," it is actually an adaptation of the novel "One Day" by David Nicholls. It was a modest hit at the box office but underwhelmed critics, and with Hathaway appearing in both "The Dark Knight Rises" and her Academy Award-winning turn in "Les Misérables" the following year, "One Day" has mostly been forgotten by the general public. One of the most common complaints lobbied against the film was that the 20-year timeline was too big to be condensed for a movie, but limited series weren't as plentiful in 2011 as they are now.

There’s no shortage of fans of Showtime’s Dexter series, mainly because it was a brilliant piece of television with a very intriguing and charismatic leading character played perfectly by Michael C. Hall. The original series ended its run after its eighth season in 2013 with a finale that was widely by fans and critics, and that was the reason that the series came back for a single season in 2021 titled Dexter: New Blood but its finale also divided fans. Warning: contains finale spoilers for Netflix’s One Day.
A year before One Day author David Nicholls published the novel that made his name, his adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 19th century novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles aired on BBC One. Years later, Nicholls described Tess to The Guardian as the book that changed his life:
“It was the first book I adapted for the screen and gave me the confidence to write something other than comedy. Adaptation does that sometimes – gives you a hand-up into new territory. Also Chapter 15 contains the germ of the idea for One Day, for which I will always be grateful.”
That germ of an idea was a quote from Tess, which is included among One Day’s many epigraphs, and it also finds its way into the final episode of Nicole Taylor’s new 14-episode Netflix adaptation starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall.

‘Is it autobiographical?’ is usually a question that female novelists can’t escape, but when David Nicholls published One Day in 2009, it also plagued him. Perhaps writing in the romantic genre encouraged interviewers to grant Nicholls honorary-woman status? Lucky him.
One Day is the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, whose lives we dip into on the same date each year for a couple of decades. They first meet as students at their Edinburgh University graduation ball in 1988, after which their lives weave in and out of each other’s all the way into their mid-30s. The book was a word-of-mouth hit that was made into a very middling film in 2011, and has since been adapted into a terrific 14-part Netflix series starring This is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod and The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall.
Because Emma and Dexter become mildly public figures in the story...

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for the film and series “One Day,” both based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name.]
If you went to see the 2011 film “One Day” in theaters, you may remember one thing and one thing only. That thing. In fact, as we type out this article, unsuspecting viewers all over the world are booting up Netflix’s superior adaptation and probably receiving the shock of a lifetime in Episode 11, refreshing the battery life on this harrowing plot twist for a whole new generation.
But Nicole Taylor’s new series has way more going for it than the film did, and a lasting power that includes compelling leads, inviting chemistry, and genuinely adept storytelling — none of which were present in the movie (that Anne Hathaway/Jim Sturgess misstep is currently rocking a 35 percent on Rotten Tomatoes).
In her review, IndieWire Senior TV Writer Proma Khosla noted, “‘One Day’ as a limited series leaves a much stronger impression than it ever could have as a film, minting [Ambika] Mod and [Leo] Woodall’s chemistry,...

Forget Valentine’s Day. As proven by Netflix’s One Day adaptation, St. Swithin’s Day is the ultimate day of love.
One Day, which is based on the novel of the same name by David Nicholls and dropped all 14 episodes on Thursday, begins on the night of Emma (played by This Is Going to Hurt’s Ambika Mod) and Dexter’s (The White Lotus’ Leo Woodall) graduation from a Scottish university. The pair cross paths at a grand celebration (nearly Saltburn-esque in its opulence, dare I say) and end up spending the night and much of the next morning together.

Forget all about Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall and co. That lot are yesterday’s chip paper. The stars of the 2011 One Day film have been superseded by this new bunch, now bringing David Nicholls’ hit 2009 romance novel to life for a new 14-episodes Netflix series. Adapted by Wild Rose and Three Girls screenwriter Nicole Taylor, One Day is a bittersweet love story set across two decades. It’s the story of Emma and Dexter, whose first night together at their university graduation sparks almost two decades of will-they-won’t-they romance.

As I queued up the first episode of Netflix’s “One Day,” I was reminded of the words of a great man: “I am ready to get hurt again.”
“One Day” of course shares its title and source material with David Nicholls’ 2009 novel and Lone Scherfig’s 2011 film — but in Nicole Taylor’s episodic version (executive produced by Nicholls) starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the story finds its wings, telling the story of Emma (Mod) and Dexter (Woodall) over decades with a snapshot of just one day in the year.
The episodic structure lends itself beautifully to Nicholls’ premise, letting each year breathe and allowing viewers to settle into Emma and Dex’s shifting dynamics — and by extension, the wider world of nebulous relationships. There is the night they (almost) slept together, the day they miss each other’s calls, the trip to Europe (with one bed), the catastrophic...

Each episode of Netflix’s One Day takes place on July 15 of successive years, from 1988 through 2007. Each year, we check in on the evolving relationship between idle rich boy Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) and the more serious-minded Emma Morley (Ambika Mod), who start out as would-be lovers, instead become friends, and gradually begin to wonder if they had things right the first time.
This structure was introduced in David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name, which has already been adapted into a 2011 film with Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway as Dexter and Emma.

Ambika Mod turned down several requests to audition for the part of Emma Morley in Netflix series “One Day,” adapted from David Nicholls’ beloved and bestselling romance novel.
As she freely admits, there was a lot going on at the time. Her first major TV project, AMC’s dark comedy-drama “This Is Going to Hurt” — based on Adam Kay’s brutally insightful memoir about working for the U.K.’s beleaguered National Health Service — had just come out, sparking both critical acclaim and widespread debate. While Ben Whishaw was the lead, much of the noise was centered on Mod’s turn as Shruti Acharya, the exhausted, overworked and unsupported junior doctor whose tragic story arc became one of the show’s key talking points.
The actress, just 27 at the time and a self-confessed introvert, had started getting several messages a day from people “pouring their hearts out,” telling her how Shruti...

In August 2011, rioting broke out on the streets of Huddersfield. Bricks were thrown at shopfronts, windows were smashed and CCTV cameras were destroyed. The cause of the violence wasn’t explicitly the rickety Yorkshire accent of Brooklyn-born Anne Hathaway in recently released film One Day, but we can’t rule it out as a contributing factor.
Hathaway’s accent in One Day wasn’t as much bad as it was senile, forgetting for large chunks of the film who it was and what it was supposed to be doing. It went up hill and down dale with all the control of Compo in a bathtub, making pitstops in London, Ireland and South Africa along the way. Perhaps impressively, it also wasn’t the worst thing about the film.

Netflix is taking on One Day, David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name chronicling the story of Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall). Officially meeting for the very first time on the night of their graduation, July 15, 1988, Emma and Dexter end up going their separate ways, but as the show unfolds, viewers track them as they experience that one ordinary day year after year. With each passing year, Dex and Em grow older, change, collide, drift apart, and experience joy as well as heartbreak. (Credit: Netflix) So, how does this adaptation serve book fans? Nicholls worked as a writer and executive producer on the 14-episode season, offering Mod and Woodall easy access for any big questions they might have about Em and Dex. “Just to have his blessing on everything is huge,” Mod gushes. “I had a Zoom with him quite early on and just spoke to...

Netflix’s One Day contains two literary quotes that, in combination, spell out the entire premise of the project. One is too much a spoiler to recount here. The other is from Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations: “Imagine one selected day struck out of your life, and think how different its course would have been. Think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on that memorable day.”
Though the line is read as a toast to a minor character’s wedding, there is no mistaking that for our purposes, it’s really about our two leads, Emma (Ambika Mod, This Is Going to Hurt) and Dexter (Leo Woodall, The White Lotus). And the chain between them is long indeed: The series spans nearly two decades over 14 meandering episodes, before...

When Leo Woodall thinks about the past year of his life, the word that comes to mind is — of course — “busy.” He broke out with a star-making turn in season two of The White Lotus (as the enigmatic and slightly sinister love interest of Haley Lu Richardson’s character), and that brought magazine covers, red carpets and an onslaught of online attention. He then went straight into production as the lead in Netflix’s adaptation of One Day, which will debut Feb. 8.
But, like many rising stars, he also has discovered the double-edged sword of industry success. “I’ve been so fortunate to work a bunch, but you end up quite disconnected from other aspects of your life. I wasn’t really expecting that, and there are things I need to figure out,” says Woodall, 27, adding that he’s getting better at staying in touch with friends and family during heavy work periods.
