Contrary to what you may have heard, being a TV writer isn’t solely about the interminable daily ritual of placing, receiving and consuming each afternoon’s rigorously debated lunch order. No—there are also fantasy football teams to be managed and Nerf basketballs to be bounced from one end of the workspace to the other. That, plus the tricky business of using one’s imagination to dream up the characters, storylines and dialogue that so many millions of people around the world build their lives around, e.g. a highly demanding creative act that often requires just as much strategic distraction as it does pure artistic inspiration. And all this is even before we even get to strikes, AI and a post-Peak TV landscape where the number of shows are actually contracting for the first time this century.
So yeah—it’s a hard industry to build a career in.

[This story contains major spoilers from season five, parts one and two, of Virgin River.]
Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith wanted the newly released holiday episodes of the Netflix series to feel lighter, given the weight of season five.
Following the part one release of 10 intense and emotional episodes (on Sept. 7) — which saw a wildfire hit Virgin River, an illegal drug business showdown, a sexual assault court trial and a difficult miscarriage — Smith knew he wanted the two holiday episodes that are now streaming to have a “feeling of family and warmth.”
Still, the beloved small town couldn’t escape at least some drama this holiday season, including Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) tracking down her biological father, who also lives in Virgin River. And of course, there’s no Virgin River seasonal event — this time, the Christmas tree decorating contest — without some challenges.
But as Smith looks ahead to the already renewed next season, he admits that his “intention was never to have...

As the courtroom narrative unfolds, the jurors’ secrets come to light and their lives unravel, ensnaring the twelve in messy personal and professional consequences. Through their differing interpretations of fact, it becomes clear that justice is never truly blind. The Twelve asks the complex and provocative question: who are we to judge?
Green executive produces alongside Banks and Handelman of Brownstone. Dannah Shinder is co-executive producing. Wbtv co-produces with Fox Entertainment.

Isn’t it Romantic, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (The Final Girls), is produced by and also stars Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson; with Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra in a gloriously subverted romantic comedy. One that revels in the absurdly ridiculous conventions of the genre it derives from, with a razor-sharp screenplay that is full of life and energising wit.
The screenplay by Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox and Katie Silberman is the strongest and standout aspect of this fabulously meta-production. “Alita: Battle Angel” is holding a slim lead ahead of “Lego Movie 2’s” second frame with an estimated four-day take of $29.1 million from 3,790 North American locations.
“Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” meanwhile, is heading for about $25 million for a domestic tally of around $66 million. The two films lead the pack for a relatively sluggish President’s Day weekend, with the top 12 films totaling significantly below last year’s revenues, which were given a massive boost from the $242 million (four-day) premiere of “Black Panther.”
Robert Rodriguez’s cyberpunk action film starring Christoph Waltz and Rosa Salazar scored $7.53 million on Friday. James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis adapted the script from Yukito Kishiro’s manga series “Gunnm,” and the Fox sci-fier holds a 59% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Alita” marks a risk for the studio, with a costly $170 million production budget.

About two weeks after Netflix released its hit summer romantic comedy “Set It Up,” screenwriter Dana Fox got a call to dust off an old rom-com screenplay — because the genre was back, baby!
After successes like “The Wedding Date,” “What Happens in Vegas” and “How to Be Single,” Fox went through years of struggle to get a rom-com made in the era of superhero blockbusters. But between Netflix and the surge of love for “Crazy Rich Asians,” the often-mocked genre is cool again — and Fox’s latest script, “Isn’t It Romantic,” hopes to ride the wave.
“I had been beaten up by studios so many times when I was trying to get movies made. I was told ‘we’re not making romantic comedies right now. It’s just not happening,'” Fox told TheWrap.

Natalie (Rebel Wilson), an Aussie architect working in Manhattan, hates rom-coms. She’s allergic to all the clichés of the genre, and ever since she was a child, her mom (Jennifer Saunders) has taught her that Hollywood fantasies with Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, etc. are “not for girls like us.” Working in New York does nothing to disabuse Natalie of the notion. She’s “extra-invisible” to her company’s handsome client, Blake (Liam Hemsworth), who Natalie describes as “CW hot.” He rudely treats her as a lowly assistant and barks orders for coffee.

Chicago – “Isn’t It Romantic” knows exactly what it is, and what it wants to be. It is simultaneously for people who love Romantic Comedy, and those who profess to hate them … but may secretly love them. It’s an amusing trifle that’s about as surprising as a heart shaped box of chocolates, but sometimes that’s what you want.

Rebel Wilson stars as a cynical New York architect – one of the go to Rom-Com professions, second only to publishing in the annals of cinematic clichés – who hates Romantic Comedies for their unrealistic depictions of love. After a knock upon the noggin during a mugging, she wakes up to find herself trapped in a Romantic Comedy world where she’s the star.

With “The Lego Movie 2” suffering a very disappointing opening, the sluggish business that defined the start of the 2019 box office is now expected to continue through February, and this weekend’s new releases aren’t expected to change that, even if some of them find success on their own merits.
One film that could be such a hit is Universal/Blumhouse’s “Happy Death Day 2U,” the sequel to Christopher Landon’s 2017 horror film. In typical Blumhouse fashion, the film was made on a thrifty $9 million budget. Releasing on Wednesday on 3,000 screens, “2U” is projected for a six-day opening in the high $20 million range through Presidents’ Day.
Another lower-budget release that could find modest success is Warner Bros./New Line’s “Isn’t It Romantic,” a satire of romantic comedies starring Rebel Wilson that is projected for a six-day opening of $20-22 million from 3,700 screens.

Satirizing a genre as you’re fully embracing it isn’t the easiest feat and is perhaps impossible. It’s true that every good satire is also in some way a love letter to its source material, but love it a little too much, and the Valentine’s card becomes onion-thin with the prim bite of a paper cut. Todd Strauss-Schulson’s rom-com sendup “Isn’t It Romantic” is one of those satires that wants to have its Valentine’s chocolates and eat them too.
This story, about a woman who hits her head and is thrown into a rom-com world of cliché and improbability, may abide by the rules of the genre too closely to function as a critique, and it’s a shame, because it’s almost there. Writers Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox (“How to Be Single”) and Katie Silberman (“Set It Up”) hold back from really making a statement,...

As a pseudo-reluctant example of yet another formulaic romantic comedy, “Isn’t It Romantic” features fewer montages than you might expect, but there’s one right about the first-act turning point in which jaded New York architect Natalie (Rebel Wilson) lays out all the reasons she hates movies like “The Wedding Singer” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” Oh, to see the full three-hour version of that screed, fleshed out with a PowerPoint presentation or performed as a one-woman Off Broadway show — now that would be a subversive answer to the genre!
What Natalie doesn’t realize is that she’s trapped in a middling romantic comedy of her own, and that her rant is really just the movie’s way of laying out the rules for what it plans to parody over the next hour or so. Frankly, it’s high time someone did for the meet-cute movie what...

Todd Strauss-Schulson’s whipsmart “Isn’t It Romantic” bites into the romantic comedy genre early, with the familiar strains of Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” — a classic on its own, but now one indelibly linked to Garry Marshall’s 1990 beloved “Pretty Woman.” While young Natalie (Alex Kis) is close enough to her TV screen to practically sit inside that Julia Roberts vehicle, her brassy mother (Jennifer Saunders) is in the kitchen, whipping up the saddest cocktail imaginable (a boxed wine ice cream float) and imploring her daughter to stop dreaming about love. “Life’s not a fairy tale,” Natalie’s mother sniffs sadly. Not for gals like them, anyway.
Twenty-five years later, grown-up Natalie (Rebel Wilson) has taken her mother’s lessons to heart. Romance? It’s not for her. Natalie’s entire life is drab and boring — hats off to the film’s set and production designers for...

From New Line Cinema comes the romantic comedy Isn’T It Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth (the “Hunger Games” films), Adam Devine and Priyanka Chopra, under the direction of Todd Strauss-Schulson.
New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.

The trailer for Rebel Wilson’s upcoming rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic” goes full meta, sending up every romantic-comedy cliché you can imagine — but still featuring a shirtless Liam Hemsworth in a towel.
Wilson stars as New York City architect Natalie, who works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper.
A lifelong cynic when it comes to love, she has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare — a PG-13 romantic comedy where she is the leading lady with a fabulous wardrobe, luxe apartment, a new gay best friend and a profanity-free vocabulary.

Rebel Wilson is ready for her “I Feel Pretty” moment. The Australian comedian best known for her roles in “Bridesmaids” and the “Pitch Perfect” franchise will step into the lead for “Isn’t It Romantic?,” a romantic comedy parody slated for a Valentine’s Day theatrical run. Fellow Aussie Liam Hemsworth plays opposite Wilson, who stars as a woman who hits her head and wakes up only able to see the world through rom-com-colored glasses. The new trailer plays like a meta rom-com that plays satirically with many of the tropes of the genre.

The CW has opted not to renew its new midseason dramedy Life Sentence for a second season. Star Lucy Hale just shared the news with her fans on Twitter.
The cancellation was foreshadowed by the CW’s decision last month to send the series from Wednesday to Friday. While Life Sentence had done Ok in delayed viewing and on-demand — largely because of the following Pretty Little Liars alumna Hale has among young viewers — it had struggled mightily in linear ratings, hitting a dismal 0.1 Live+same day in 18-49 before its Friday move. The show stayed at the 0.1 demo level in its outings on the new night.
“I was emotionally attached to this story and to everyone involved so I’m a little shell shocked right now, but I feel fortunate that we got to tell a beautiful story,” Hale wrote. “Sometimes things don’t resonate with the audience, and shows...
