Inspired by an Iranian film, he weaves a compelling story of humanity and compassion in the backdrop of the charming backwaters of Kerala. A little boy from Gujarat gets orphaned in an earthquake and gets lost in a small town in Kerala. His chance meeting with a kind stranger leads us to a narrative that reaffirms our belief in humanity. The boy is homeless, grubby, hungry, and gabbles in an unfamiliar language. Initially, you see him in the company of street urchins who teach him to beg. At night when he snuggles inside open cylindrical tanks along with other children, they try to protect him from a predatory cop. But in a sheer stroke of luck, he bumps into Madhavan,...

ReviewPregnancy is a time of tumultuous change in a woman’s life, and the film acknowledges this; yet, there appears to be a hesitation to really get into the frustrating and ugly challenges that women face.Sowmya RajendranA still from Wonder Women: Instagram/ Sony Liv IndiaAll through the pandemic, as Ott platforms released anthology films on the experiences of people in lockdown, I waited for at least one filmmaker to make a movie about mothers and their struggle to manage home and work with schools closed for two long years. We had films about lovers, the elderly, married couples with problems – but not a single story representing how women coped with young children during those uncertain, depressing days. This isn’t a contradiction in a country that glorifies pregnancy and motherhood; it is because we’re so fond of glorifying both that we don’t want to acknowledge any narrative...

ReviewBiju Menon, Padmapriya, Nimisha Sajayan and Roshan Mathew are wonderful in the film, which loses some appeal due to its storytelling.CrisFrom the top of a 250-metre high lighthouse on the beach, all of a little town in South Kerala could be seen, says the narrator of Oru Thekkan Thallu Case. Inside the tower then, on cue, appears the cartoon figure of Biju Menon. A nice little animation introduces the characters of the town in the titles before the film opens. The situation is made clear in a few scenes — Biju Menon is Amminipilla, a sort of hero figure in the town whom no one wants to mess with. A gang of five young men are pitted against him for many reasons. The film, based on a short story by Gr Indugopan, revolves around this rivalry, set against a beautiful rustic background, but lacking in storytelling quality. It is director Sreejith N’s first film.

MollywoodFrom citing technicalities to claiming confidentiality, the Kerala government has given various reasons for not publishing the Hema Committee report findings on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.Tnm StaffWhen it formed quietly in July 2017, or submitted a report two-and-a-half years later, the Hema Committee had not received a lot of attention in Kerala. Two more years went by before anything more was heard about the Committee, put together by the Government of Kerala’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs explicitly to study the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. The Committee was formed a few months after a prominent actor in Kerala was sexually assaulted in an attack allegedly masterminded by another actor, Dileep. Several women who immediately came out in support of the survivor actor had formed a collective in three months – the Women in Cinema Collective (Wcc) – and asked the government to conduct such a study.

MollywoodFrom depicting Adivasis as foolish to viewing them only as objects to be exploited, Malayalam cinema has a long history of misrepresenting the community.Neelima MenonRecently journalist and anti-caste activist Divya Kandukuri, while breaking down how Brahmin-Dvija feminism is considered mainstream feminism, made a valid observation. When you type “Brahmin women” and “Adivasi women” on Google, the images that are shown are proof of how they are perceived in the public domain. Fair-skinned, bejeweled, or it can be popular mainstream actors, or married women doing rituals as opposed to the images and videos of Adivasi and Dalit women getting beaten up, paraded naked and raped. The possibility of such exploitative images of a Brahmin woman reaching Google is highly unlikely. This is also true of the representation of Adivasis/ethnic minorities in mainstream Malayalam cinema. The 2002 Ali Akbar directed Bamboo Boys, revolves around four “tribal men” who step into the...

ControversyThe letter's signatories include actor Chetan, director Kavitha Lankesh, actor Sruthi Hariharan, actor Prakash Raj and actor-director Rakshit Shetty.Haripriya SureshThe ‘dump Dileep’ chorus is growing – whether or not the Malayalam film industry giants want to hear it. The Kannada Film Industry (Kfi) and the Film Industry for Rights & Equality (Fire) are the latest in a long line of people and organisations who have condemned the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (Amma) for reinstating Dileep, an accused in the case of the abduction and sexual assault of an actor. In a letter to Amma General Secretary Edavala Babu, Kfi and Fire expressed their disappointment with Amma, and asked the association to revoke Dileep’s reinstatement till he is cleared of all charges, “and uphold the moral compasses that our film industries at their best possess.” The letter has 50 signatories including actors Chetan, Sruthi Hariharan, Shraddha Srinath, Diganth, Meghana Gaonkar, actor-directors Rakshit Shetty and Prakash Rai, directors Kavitha Lankesh, Roopa Iyer and Pannaga Bharana, among others. “Although we of Kfi & Fire espouse the Constitutional notion of ‘innocent until proven guilty,’ we deem Amma’s reinstatement as even more inappropriate since the victim has been a member of Amma and the accused has yet to be acquitted of all wrongdoing,” the letter said. “With issues like women’s safety and gender equality being at the forefront of national debate, our cinema industries have strong responsibilities to blaze exemplary trails for the rest of society,” it added. Speaking to Tnm, Kannada actor Chetan said: “Now, to reinstate that person, we believe that it is not a thoughtful decision and it doesn’t reflect well on the industry because there is no information about the innocence of Dileep. We are not judging the guilt or the innocence of Dileep, that is up to the courts,” he said. “From our industry standpoint, it (Amma reinstating Dileep) is not sending out the right message. From our industry standpoint, it doesn’t show that the industry and Amma cares about the victim, who is also an Amma member, and also does not bode well about caring about the most vulnerable people – whether that be a woman in the film industry or a woman victimised by violence in this situation,” he added. Earlier this week, four women from the Women in Cinema Collective – Rima Kallingal, Ramya Nambessan, Geetu Mohandas and the survivor – resigned from Amma soon after it reinstated Dileep. Following this, three other Wcc members, Parvathy, Padmapriya, and Revathy, submitted a letter to Amma, questioning its decision and calling for an emergency executive meeting. Fifteen Wcc members also issued a statement explaining why they had never become part of Amma. Speaking to Tnm, actor Sruthi Hariharan told Tnm about why Wcc’s work was important at this juncture, and why one needs to take a stand. “Wcc was formed at a time when a lot of people raised their voice against a man who is accused in the sexual assault case of a fellow artiste. We have heard a lot of such issues being pushed under the carpet and half the time never spoken about, probably because of a fear of losing out on their career or their morality being questioned,” she said. “I think the work of Wcc is very important, especially the fact that this particular battle that they are fighting against Amma is their biggest battle since the time they started. I found it very inspiring that they raised their voice. Especially as a woman, I think it is even more important to support fellow women and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do over here,” she added. Several prominent members of the Malayalam industry have also slammed Amma. Several actors, directors, producers and other technicians from the industry have called to question the actions of Amma office bearers and have demanded that the public representatives who are part of the body, step down.

MollywoodOn Thursday, actors Revathy, Padmapriya, and Parvathy submitted letters to Amma, asking for an emergency executive meeting about the film body's decision to reinstate Dileep.Tnm StaffThe faultlines in the Malayalam film industry have widened to fissures after the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (Amma) took back rape accused Dileep in their organisation. On Thursday, Wcc members and actors Revathy, Padmapriya, and Parvathy submitted letters to Amma, asking for an emergency executive meeting about the film body's decision to reinstate Dileep. The post on the Wcc page begins with a note asserting their solidarity with the survivor: "In solidarity with our colleagues who took a brave stand yesterday! Always #Avalkoppam. We at Wcc believe that constructive dialogue as well as action is essential for real change. Each one of us are shocked at the decision made at the previous general body meeting of Amma. Hence we as Amma members have sought a meeting with the new executive committee as explained in our letter. All members of Amma had condemned that heinous act of assault on the survivor. All members of Amma had pledged complete support to the survivor. But this last decision of Amma directly contradicts all of that. Hence we want to know where Amma really stands on this issue. Sharing the official letter sent to Amma !" In the letter addressed to Edavela Babu, the General Secretary of Amma, the members have questioned how the decision to take back Dileep was made without it being listed on the agenda. They have further said that they were not in town when the meeting was held and that they would have surely opposed the move had they been present. Calling for an emergency Executive meeting, the members have put forth four demands to Amma, including asking what the film body had done in support of the survivor and how the bye-laws are structured to protect the welfare of its members. The move comes after the events of Wednesday when core members of the Women in Cinema Collective - actors Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambeeshan, director Geethu Mohandas, and the survivor in the case - resigned in protest from Amma. The four women are also part of the Wcc which was instituted after one of them was abducted and brutally assaulted in February 2017. While Amma had initially appeared to support the survivor, the narrative soon changed after the police arrested Dileep for being the mastermind behind the conspiracy. Dileep was denied bail twice and he faced a massive public backlash soon after the arrest. However, since then, several prominent members of the Malayalam film industry have thrown their weight behind him, asserting that he could not have done what he stands accused of. This, even as the police investigation was underway. In their respective resignation letters, Rima, Remya, Geethu, and the survivor had each noted their disappointment with Amma and the conduct of its members. Actor Rima Kallingal had slammed the film body's insensitivity in an interview with Reporter TV in which she had cited how the Malayalam film industry had ridiculed the Wcc repeatedly, with little consideration for the survivor's state of mind. Read the full letter below: To Shree Edavela Babu, General Secretary, Amma Dear Sir, We are writing this letter to express our concern as women members of Amma on the recent decision to bring back the expelled member (Dileep) in the general body meeting held on 24th July 2018. At this meeting, a very crucial decision was taken regarding a member who was expelled due to his involvement in the alleged assault of one of Amma's women members. Considering the gravity of the circumstances and the matter being sub-judice, it is shocking that such an important matter was decided without listing it on the agenda or being discussed among all members prior to the meeting. Amma had publicly pledged full support to the member who survived the assault but the decision taken at the said meeting for reinstating the expelled member who is now a charge sheeted suspect, goes against the promise made by Amma to the survivor. As a result, yesterday, the survivor has resigned and in solidarity with her three other women members have also resigned. They have clearly stated their reasons and this does not reflect well on Amma and what it does for the welfare of its women members. We as members of Amma urge that Amma upholds the promise it has made and should not go back on its word. Particularly so as this matter is still under legal and media scrutiny and there is strong public outcry about it. We were unable to attend the said meeting as we were not in station and were unaware about this matter being discussed at the meeting. (If we had known we would have surely raised our concerns at the meeting prior to such a decision being made). We understand from Amma officials that under such exceptional circumstances there is a provision for an Emergency Executive Body Meeting to be called to address our concerns. We request for the same to be called so that we may participate, discuss & understand: 1. The expelled member's reinstatement & the implications of Amma's decision. 2. The steps taken by Amma to support the survivor. 3. How AMMAs bye-laws are structured to ensure welfare of all its members. 4. What Amma can do to make women feel more included and safe. As members who do not reside/ are not present in Kerala we are requesting the meeting to take place on either 13th or 14th of July 2018. As members of Amma we genuinely believe that at this critical point we will come together to serve the best interests of all our members. Look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Revathy Asha Kelunni, Padmapriya Janakiraman, Parvathy. Life Members of Amma. 28th June 2018 ...

The awards were for Best Direction (Jayaraj), Best Adapted Screenplay (Jayaraj) and Best Cinematography (Nikhil S Praveen). For director Jayaraj who helmed his first film Vidyarambham in 1988 and is still going strong, this was his second National Award for Best Director. The first came way back in 1997 for the internationally acclaimed Kaliyattam starring then mainstream hero Suresh Gopi in the lead role. Apart from several National Awards, Jayaraj's work has also won international honours at various film festivals. An engineering graduate, Jayaraj was drawn to films after being fascinated by classics like Akiro Kurosowa’s Rashomon and Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves. Fortunately for the young man, he had as his neighbor one of Malayalam cinema’s most celebrated directors, Bharathan. Bharathan took Jayaraj under his wing and their first collaboration together was Chilambam. Jayaraj assisted the veteran in six more films, including the lavishly mounted Vaishali. After getting his first break with Vidyarambham, Jayaraj went on to direct several films that did precious little to further his career. Most of them were commercial ventures like Aakasha Kottayile Sultan, Johnnie Walker, Highway, Arabia, Kudumbasameham etc. But the first film in which Jayaraj showed flashes of his brilliance was Desadanam, released in 1997. The film which eschewed commercial ingredients in toto, narrated the story of a young boy all set to renounce material life and embrace the life of a sanyasi and the emotional churn in the lives of his parents who are loath to part with him. The film turned out to be a commercial success and also won the National Award for the Best Regional Film. But the film that created a greater impact was Kaliyattam, also released in 1997 an adaption of Shakespeare’s Othello. The principal characters of Theyyam artistes were played by Suresh Gopi, Lal and Biju Menon, with Lal playing Iago to Gopi’s Othello and Manju Warrier, with her large expressive eyes was cast as Desdemona. Misled by Paniyan ( Lal), Kannan Perumalayan (Suresh Gopi) suspects his wife’s fidelity and slays her, only to realise later that she was innocent of his suspicions. Stung with remorse, Perumalyaan kills himself. Jayaraj won the National Award for Best Director for the film and Suresh Gopi was adjudged the Best Actor. After flirting with comedy in Thilakkam, starring Dileep and Kavya Madhavan, Jayaraj again captivated audiences with his hard hitting film 4 The People, a story of four engineering college students who raise a banner of revolt against corruption. The major highlight of the film, however, was Jassie Gift’s music score with a few numbers turning into chartbusters. While 4 The People was a hit, the other two films which were part of the trilogy - By the People and Of the People turned out to be damp squibs. Jayaraj embarked on a series of films, dubbing them as a ‘navarasa’ series and the culmination of the journey was Bhayanakam. The films were titled Shantham, Karunam, Bheebats (Hindi with Seema Biswas and Atul Kulkarni), Adhbudham, Veeram and Bhayanakam. Except Bhayanakam which is expected to hit the screens this month, all the other films were released commercially to varying degrees of success. Veeram, which had Bollywood actor Kunal Kapoor in the lead, was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and was a period film set in 13th century Kerala. A painstaking effort by Jayaraj, his cast and technicians, the film which had Kerala’s celebrated martial arts discipline ‘kalari’ as a backdrop met with little success at the box-office. Bhayanakam was based on a couple of chapters that were a part of Jnanpith winning author Thakazhi Sivashankara Pillai’s epic novel Kayar. A simple film with a few characters, Bhayanakam is set in the days of World War II and the protagonist isa postman (Renji Panikkar) who delivers money orders from soldiers to their kin in a village in the pre-war days. With the outbreak of war, the same postman turns into an omen of death, carrying telegrams conveying tragic news of ultimate sacrifice on the war front and becomes a dreaded figure. Among the oeuvres of this director who has always trodden his own path, was Naayika, the story of an actor. It had Urvashi Sharada in the role of a diva past her prime and Padmapriya as her younger version. Jayaram, as the evergreen hero of Malayalam cinema Prem Nazir, played his part to perfection, bringing to life the mannerisms of the star and his perfect diction as well. Naayika won critical acclaim but bombed at the box office. But, perhaps the one film that should deserve a pole position among Jayaraj’s works was the much admired Ottaal, the plot of which he borrowed from the play Vaanka by the Russian playwright and author Anton Chekov. The film narrated the story of an emotional bond between a young orphan boy and his grandfather, with their simple joys and profound sorrows forming the nucleus. Brilliant acting by Ashank Sha as the young boy and Kumarokom Vasudevan (a fisherman in real life), as the grandfather, haunting visuals and Jayaraj’s deft directorial touches were the highlights of the film. Ottaal won all the major awards at the International Film Festival of Kerala and also the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. The film also had the distinction of being the first Malayalam film to be released in the theatres and online simultaneously. While Jayaraj has worked with superstar Mammootty in three films Johnnie Walker, Loudspeaker and The Train, he is yet to make a single film with the other reigning superstar Mohanlal. Jayaraj has plans to direct films based on the arts, Shringara, Roudram and Hasyam in the coming days. His greatest strength so far has been the discerning viewer and most of his films have catered to that segment of film aficionados.

Chef
Starring Saif Ali Khan, Padmapriya Janakiraman, Svar Kamble
Directed by Raja Krishna Menon
There is a lot of teasing between the father and son, played with endearing casualness by Saif Ali Khan and Svar Kamble. Aptly, Chef teases our appetite for cinema. It’s a culinary delight—warm, tender, inviting and appetizing– served up in a dainty dish with a dash of debonair but played-down posturing, like a masterchef who is shy to show off his skills but can’t help it. He’s so adept at what he does.
Chef conveys the kind of sagacious skill born not out of arrogance but wisdom sometimes misplaced. Like the protagonist Roshan Kalra’s traditionalist father who believes the kitchen is for women.

Ram's "Thanga Meenal" is not your ordinary Tamil film that comes week after week. It's a rare children's film that rises to live up to its purpose while stumbling along the way. Few actors purposely went away from Kollywood as the film industry here is brimmed with mass hero images and lots of egoistic approach between them. Actor Madhavan can be a perfect illustration and so is Siddarth, who just acted in couple of Tamil films and flew all the way to Telugu and Hindi films.
Actress Padmapriya, who recently made her Bollywood debut with ‘Striker’, says, ‘I must thank Siddarth for having offered me a role in his film. It was Siddarth, who recommended me after watching some of my films. I will continue acting in Hindi films only if I come across meaty roles. It’s not like other actresses just picking whatever they’re offered with…’
The actress has won laurels across all the regional languages for her commendable performance.

How did you land your role in Striker?
Being part of the same fraternity, Siddharth suggested my name to Chandan Arora, and that's how the ball got rolling.
Tell us a bit about your character Madhu?
Madhu is a bar owner, a Kohli girl, a woman who exudes superlative energy, warmth, and sense of humor that is very naive but is very mature, businesslike and real at the same time.

He belongs to a new breed of makers for whom cinema is not just merely film making, but instead a process in which you get absolutely involved in the subject matter. Making a film for them is more than just organising a film and executing it, but instead believing 110% in what they're bringing to life on screen. Perhaps that is why although he's only 2 films old, Chandan Arora has somewhat a name for himself already amongst the audiences and more importantly his peers. This February, after a lot of struggle and trouble, the highly talented director is all set to release his third directorial venture which he has also produced. The film stars Siddharth (Rang De Basanti), Aditya Pancholi (Yes Boss), Ankur Vikal (Slumdog Millionaire), Nicolette Bird (Rock On!!) and Southern actress Padmapriya. Promos have made everyone more and more intrigued about this project, so Chandan put all the queries...

Vidya Malvade makes a striking addition to the cast of Siddharth’s Striker, along with Padmapriya and Nicolette Bird. She’s full of praise for her co-stars, in particular model Nicolette. “Nicolette is a very beautiful girl and is a nice actress too,” she says, “She plays an important role in the film. In the movie she looks like a pristine goddess from heaven.”
Vidya is slowly coming to terms with the fact that everyone confuses her with Vidya Balan, but she nearly blew her top on the set of the movie when a delivery boy refused to give here a bouquet sent to her by her husband, insisting they were for Vidya Balan. After that, it became a running joke for the cast who kept instructing new delivery boys to refer to her as Miss Balan.
Vidya is developing a bit of a reputation as a sports and games enthusiast.

Kollywood actress Padmapriya says she is feeling butterflies in her stomach as she waits for the release of her Bollywood movie Striker next week. The movie also marks the return to the screen of Siddharth. She admits, however, that she enjoyed the experience of making the movie. "I am contented about playing the role,” she confirms, “We worked from 2:00 in the afternoon to 4:00 am the next day. It was a great experience."
The actress has no plans, however, to up sticks and move north, preferring instead the variety and flexibility offered by the south‘s movie industries. “After essaying the challenging role of a tribal warrior in the period saga Pazhazzi Raja, I am excited about my Tamil film Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam and the Kannada film Thamasu,” she says.
Her flexibility will certainly be put to the test in the comedy western Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam in which she plays a cowgirl.

After the audio launch of the film Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam, Padmapriya spoke to the media. She said,” I am acting in films which have quality stories. In Thavamai Thavamirundhu I donned the role of a 16 year old girl and 32 years old girl. In Mirugam I did the role with a different character. In Satham Podathey I acted in a very different role them my earlier two films. In Pokkisham I donned a soft role. Few people are giving wrong information that I am acting in film with the aim of getting awards. I am not acting in cinema aiming to get awards.
Cinema is not for awards alone. People are looking in a funny way since I have come for this function wearing glamorous dress. I am not worried about image. I do what I like. Many are advising that I could earn more if I do glamorous role like Nayanthara and Trisha.

The most expensive Mollywood movie ever made, the historical epic Pazhassi Raja has been the big Diwali hit in Kerala and elsewhere this weekend, with over 500 prints produced. Starring Mammootty in the title role, the film tells the tragic tale of the epic rebellion of Pazhassi Raja, an early king of Kerala at the end of the 18th century, who led an army of Nairs and Kurichiyas, armed with little more than swords and bows and arrows, who fought the British to a standstill for more than ten years in the forests of the south. The movie has been compared to recent Chinese-made epics such as Hero or Red Cliff. The film opens with a narration from Shahrukh Khan in the Hindi version, which the great man provided for free as he comes from a family of freedom fighters and wanted to support the project.

We've been hearing about this project since 2008 however after much anticipation nothing came of it. Now Siddharth starrer Striker is back in the news and hopefully won't go away from headlines until release.
Rumour has it that the reason for the much delay of the project has been issues with distribution of the film. And so came to the rescue Rdb co-star Aamir Khan who helped the makers and Studio 18 strike a deal convenient to both.
