Following a nearly five-year absence, AMC is revisiting anthology The Terror for a third cycle.
The basic-cable network on Tuesday, ahead of its time at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, announced that the horror franchise will return for a third season and will be subtitled Devil in Silver, with the new cycle based on the book of the same name by Victor Lavalle.
The author will team with Chris Cantwell (AMC’s own Halt and Catch Fire) to write the six-episode season, which is expected to air on the cabler in 2025.
AMC says Devil in Silver “tells the story of Pepper — a working-class moving man, who through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital — an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets,...

The Writers Guild of America East is petitioning employers to ensure that protections are in place for journalists as AI technology develops.
The petition, signed by more than 1,000 members, calls for “immediate, good faith negotiations on AI,” including outside of scheduled contract bargaining, as well as “a guarantee that AI protections will be on the table in future bargaining.”
The petition also calls on employers to “publicly commit to never replacing a human worker with an AI tool,” something that has been a big concern among journalists, as well as film and TV writers in their recent strike.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order to try to establish protections for safety and security around AI, as well as an effort to mitigate its displacement of workers. But the labor provisions are limited to creating a set of best practices and principles, as further steps to preserve jobs likely would take congressional action.

Each December, acclaimed television series from the previous 12 months are discussed in the form of “best of...” lists. In these, the same shows are usually bandied around – some deserving (Better Call Saul), others not so (we won’t name names).
Often, though, several key titles are omitted – not because they aren’t any good, but because they haven’t been widely seen. This is understandable; after all, there’s an increasing amount of television to wade through every week.
Perhaps this is why these lists are skewed towards the high-profile releases – the ones that happen to be right there when people browse Netflix or whichever streaming service they have. But the fact remains, there’s a goldmine of under-the-radar shows out there to discover.
In the past year, all of the below deserved more love.

I’ll admit: Even as a professional television critic, I had to look up what cable or streaming service released “The Porter” this year. The CBC original series from Arnold Pinnock and Bruce Ramsey landed two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations Tuesday morning, and in order to be eligible, a TV show “must be available [in the U.S.] via network, basic cable, pay cable, pay television, pay-per-view, interactive cable, broadband, or digital distribution through streaming platforms.”
So where did the organization’s nominating committees dig up a series with only seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? BET+!

Not only is the awards machine a duplicative endeavor, where the most popular picks get spotlighted so often it’s easier to tune them out than recognize why they’re winning this time, but...

Cleopatra Wong, a kick-ass Interpol agent known to have influenced some of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, is to be revived in an upcoming Asian TV series.
The female action hero was created by The Philippines’ Bobby Suarez (aka George Richardson) and featured in three movies – “They Call Her Cleopatra Wong,” “Dynamite Johnson” and “Devil’s Angels” (aka “Mean Business”) – produced in the late 1970s by Bas Film Productions. Her name is a reference to Blaxploitation character Cleopatra Jones, albeit melded with Bruce Lee action and early James Bond cool. Marrie Lee (aka Doris Young) starred in all three movies.
‘Dynamite Johnson’ poster courtesy of Everett Collection.
Tarantino has said that Wong was an inspiration for Uma Thurman’s central character in his “Kill Bill” movies. The “They Call Her…” title was also used for a succession of unrelated exploitation films in the U.S., Europe and The Philippines.

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.
The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.
“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.

Nearly 400 directors have signed a statement of solidarity with the showrunners’ letter demanding abortion protections from networks, studios and streamers a week and a half ago.
There are now nearly 1,500 writers and directors presenting a united front in asking Hollywood’s employers to help provide abortion access in states where it is now illegal. On July 28, more than 400 female, trans and non-binary TV creators and showrunners sent a letter to the likes of Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal and Netflix asking them to craft explicit policies to protect employees seeking abortions, particularly those working on productions in states where the procedure is now or soon will be prohibited following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson. On Aug. 1, nearly 600 of their male counterparts signed a statement of support.
The original letter demanded that companies furnish a written policy of their current abortion safety plan within 10 days.

Elle Fanning is Hulu’s Mvp this year, in contention via both her edgy comedy series “The Great” and the dark limited series “The Girl From Plainville.” Not only does she star in both she also serves as an executive producer on the two projects.
“Hulu comments on my Instagram photos all the time,” she says. “And it’s always a boost from Hulu. They’re like, ‘Yes, Queen! You’re doing great!” It’s like, thanks, Hulu! Whoever’s running that, they’re really giving me a boost in the morning when I check my comments.”
That affirmation is appreciated by Fanning as she heads to London soon to shoot Season 3 of “The Great.” Last year, she kept a grueling schedule in which she filmed “The Girl From Plainville” just days after wrapping Season 2 of “The Great.”
“It was a complete 180,” she says. Fanning spoke to Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast about both shows,...

In the third episode of Apple TV+’s Pachinko adaptation, the 1989 storyline at first blush appears to be about Solomon simply recruiting his grandmother, Sunja, to convince a landowner to sell her Tokyo lot to his bank. But a simple bite of rice, grown back home in Korea, unexpectedly upended that grand plan, triggering as it did a flood of memories, good and bad, for Sunja.
TVLine spoke with Academy Award winner Yuh-Jung Youn and director Kogonada about how the quiet scene went from being about not clinging to the past, to having the past cling to you.

Ballots are out. Voting is open. The 2022 Emmy Awards are officially up for grabs, as networks, studios, and stars vie for TV’s highest honor. With more contenders in nearly every major category, this year is poised to be a particularly tight race to join.
So let’s make it a bit easier. Below, IndieWire’s Marcus Jones and Ben Travers (Deputy Editor and Critic) have filled out a joint dream ballot, stocked with worthy options for voters to consider. These are critical favorites, under-the-radar gems, and personal picks that just might expand a field that tends to get stagnate.
Now, before anyone takes their complaints to Twitter — “Where’s ‘Succession’?” “What about ‘Ted Lasso'”? — last year’s top winners were taken off the table in order to include more space for unproven programs and performers. In general, we tried to steer away from too many frontrunners, though a few...
