There aren’t a lot of horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (there are four, to be exact), but the few we do have to look forward to are an eclectic and entertaining bunch nonetheless. Scream Factory is giving HD overhauls to both Death Becomes Her and the cult classic Sssssss this week, and Christmas is coming a bit early this year by way of Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, which hits Blu-ray and DVD on April 26th. Our last release for this week is a pair of 1970s underground classics, Crypt of the Living Dead and House of the Living Dead, which arrive together on DVD courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome.

It’s difficult trying to contain your excitement when you’re doing one of these behind-the-scenes visits for a highly anticipated movie like “Star Trek Into Darkness.” I’ll admit it right now: I’m a Star Trek fan but in no way, shape or form would I ever consider myself a Trekkie. I’ve watched the original series, dipped myself into The Next Generation and have seen about ninety percent of the movies. So I’m relatively more open-minded to the possibility of “Star Trek Into Darkness” sharing some similarities to previous Star Trek films, even “Wrath of Khan.”
It’s a clear, smog-filled Los Angeles early afternoon as a number of domestic and international press make their way over to J.J. Abrams’ not-so-secret headquarters, Bad Robot. It may not look like much on the outside, minus the rooftop that’s covered in grass for some reason, but in...

When J.J. Abrams opens his door to the media, he doesn't hold back: On December 10, the director hosted a full-day preview of "Star Trek Into Darkness" at the Bad Robot offices in Santa Monica, where we were treated to makeup, costume and visual FX demonstrations, as well as a sit-down with composer Michael Giacchino and some secret footage which Abrams made us swear not to reveal. Most of the cast was also on hand to chat informally about the much-anticipated sequel to the 2009 reboot, which opens on May 17, 2013. The night before, we watched the first nine minutes of the film, which introduces the villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whom we now know as John Harrison (the nine-minute preview is set to play before IMAX screenings of "The Hobbit" this Friday). The opening of the movie also lands us right back in the action with Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and McCoy...

Farley Granger "didn't fear the homoerotic subtext of either of the films he did for Hitchcock," writes Farran Nehme in the run-up to the For the Love of Film III Blogathon. "Mind you, in his autobiography Granger says he spent years disappointing critics and interviewers when asked about discussions with Hitchcock about just what was going on between Rope's two main characters: 'What discussions? It was 1948.' That didn't mean, though, that Granger himself and co-star John Dall were clueless." And as for Strangers on a Train (1951): "Given a role of ambiguous morality, he increases the questions about the character, rather than trying to emphasize the good-Guy qualities."

Kevin David Anderson, author of Night Of The Living Trekkies, sent us a fun greeting for St. Patrick's Day which mashes up the evil leprechaun from the Leprechaun horror movies, with Star Trek's beloved Captain James T. Kirk in "Leprekhhhaaaaaan!!!"
If you don't get this reference, I implore you to immediately watch one of the greatest movies ever, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Happy St. Patty's Day, everyone! [...]...

When Kevin David Anderson, author of Night Of The Living Trekkies wants to kickstart his creative juices, he turns to some photoshop fun. He sent over his latest 'shop job to me today called Starfleet Scooby, which shows the Scooby-Doo gang as Star Trek Starfleet officers.
Here's Anderson's caption: "…and the Romulans would have gotten away with it too, if it hadn’t been for those meddling Starfleet kids…"
Should we be concerned that Velma's in red? [...]...

This is a trailer for a new horror/comedy/sci-fi book called “Night of the Living Trekkies” by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall. As you can imagine, it’s a mash-up of zombie movies, comedies, and making fun of Trekkies. Or not really making fun, but maybe making fun with (?) Trekkies. In any case, the trailer is awesome, and must have cost them a pretty penny. Don’t be surprise when you hear an official announcement that “Night of the Living Trekkies” is going to be made into a movie. It’s that good. Journey to the Final Frontier of Sci-Fi Zombie Horror! Jim Pike was the world’s biggest Star Trek fan—until two tours of duty in Afghanistan destroyed his faith in the human race. Now he sleepwalks through life as the assistant manager of a small hotel in downtown Houston. But when hundreds of Trekkies arrive...

When I got an email asking if I would be interested in receiving and reviewing a copy of Night of the Living Trekkies, I totally jumped on that shit!
While my sister is more of a Trek fan than myself (sorry guys, I’m a Star Wars kinda dork), I have fond memories of watching reruns and whatever current series was airing when I was a kid. Plus, a sci-fi/horror/parody about a dork convention? Definitely couldn’t pass that up.
The novel, by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, follows glorified bellhop Jim Pike (who just happens to have been through two military tours in Afghanistan) and a rag-tag bunch of con-goers including his sister, a booth babe and a pompous nerd as they try to survive a zombie apocalypse and escape the con with their lives.
Now, I know that this may sound like a regular convention to you,...

Oh, Trekkies. Take a look at this video trailer for Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall’s new book “Night of the Living Trekkies” about — you guessed it — trekkies. Or, er, trekkers, I guess someone of them would rather be called. Yes, it’s a trailer for a book. Trust me, this stuff is more commonplace than you think, especially for genre books. I’ve even seen trailers for thrillers, mystery novels, etc on network TV. Journey to the Final Frontier of Sci-Fi Zombie Horror! Earlier this month, Quirk Books released their latest mash-up novel Night Of The Living Trekkies, written by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall.
It's a real fun book -- yes, fun! -- about a bunch of Star Trek convention attendees who find themselves faced with hordes of the undead! [Check out my full review of the book for my thoughts.]
Quirk has just released a trailer for Night Of The Living Trekkies, which you can watch here below.
I know, you're probably not accustomed to watching trailers for books, but this one is pretty hilarious. Matter of fact, I'm just about ready to see this movie made! [...]...

While I've never really understood the phenomenon of a "book trailer", publishers keep putting them out in an attempt to distinguish certain titles in a crowded marketplace. I understand it from a marketing perspective, but most of the book trailers I've seen haven't exactly made me want to rush out and buy the novel they were hawking. That's changed with the two new trailers we're bringing you today -- sort of a double-edged sword in its own way.
Past the jump you'll find clips for Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall's hilarious sounding 'Night of the Living Trekkies' and J.W. Rinzler's 'The Making of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back'.
Both these clips are really great -- so great, in fact, that I want a movie and a documentary, and not two books on these topics.

Quirk Books are at it again! Following their successful horror/classic literature mash-ups such as Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Quirk Books are moving into a whole new frontier with Night of the Living Trekkies, from Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall.

Night Of The Living Trekkies
Paperback
By Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall
Quirk Books
Release date: September 1, 2010
Quirk Books has already proved successful with their literary monster mash-ups like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and it looks like they've scored another hit with Night Of The Living Trekkies, a brand new tale based on two popular genres, zombies and scifi.
Written by Kevin David Anderson and Sam Stall, Night Of The Living Trekkies takes place during GulfCon, an annual Star Trek convention in Houston, Texas hosted at the Botany Bay [wink wink] Hotel and Conference Center. This is not your simple Con -- at this event, Trekkies and Trekkers (yes, there's a difference and this story explains what it is) go out of their way to dress as the most obscure characters from the Star Trek franchise. The level of intensity in their planning...
