Sombre music accompanies a brisk beach day as we focus on a man, who appears to be talking to himself, or maybe us. With actor-writer-director Matt Kane’s feature debut Auggie, there is much more than meets the eye, but you will have to put some specs on to see it.
Felix, an architect forced into retirement, brings a whole lot of awkwardness to his send off speech – you can feel his colleagues toes curl and eyes roll as they frankly couldn’t care this man will no longer be at their firm. After a few forced smiles and a somewhat clichéd farewell, instead of the classic company watch as a parting gift he receives a high-tech pair of glasses in the hope a buddy or rather an augmented reality companion will keep his loneliness at bay during retirement. Felix soon realizes that ‘Auggie’ isn’t any old projection visible...

Richard Kind is compelling as the retiree seduced by a VR ‘companion’, but the film fails to do much with its rather familiar premise
The face of American character actor Richard Kind – melancholy, hangdog, a little dyspeptic – is exactly right for this high-concept midlife satire from director and co-writer Matt Kane. It’s a variation on a familiar theme the time is the near future and Kind plays Felix, an architect in his 60s who has been pushed out of the firm he helped build and is now at home grumpily adjusting to unwanted retirement. His busy wife and grownup daughter have no great need of him these days so poor, emasculated Felix takes comfort in his hi-tech retirement gift: a pair of “Auggie” glasses, through which the wearer can see an “augmented reality companion”, a virtual-reality hologram of exactly the kind of submissively understanding person your subconscious wants to see – in Felix’s case,...

"You have a new perspective." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an odd indie film titled Auggie, the feature directorial debut of English actor / filmmaker Matt Kane. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival this year, and also played at the Newport Beach, Greenwich, and Provincetown Film Festivals. From the looks of it, this seems like another kooky film much like Lars and the Real Girl about a man who falls in love with a fake woman. In Auggie, Richard Kind plays Felix Greystone, who is forced into early retirement and falls in love with an augmented reality companion, damaging his relationship with his wife and daughter. The cast includes Christen Harper as Auggie, plus Larisa Oleynik, Christine Donlon, Susan Blackwell, Steven M. Robertson, and James C. Victor. This seems way more sad and depressing than expected, but it's supposed to be a cautionary tale about technology and our addiction to it.

Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to the Richard Kind sci-fi movie Auggie from Myriad Pictures.
Directed and written by Matt Kane and co-written and produced by Marc Underhill of Thundercane Productions, Auggie follows early retiree Felix Greystone (Kind) who falls in love with an augmented reality companion, to the detriment of his relationship with his wife and daughter.
At his “early retirement” party, Felix is given a pre-release version of an “Auggie,” a pair of augmented reality smart glasses that project a perfectly human companion onto his world. When Felix’s wife Anne gets a promotion and his daughter Grace gets serious with her boyfriend, Felix suddenly feels very alone. He opens up to his new companion and is recognized and appreciated by her, and begins to fall for her.
Larisa Oleynik, Susan Blackwell and newcomer Christen Harper also star.
Auggie made its world premiere at Cinequest Film and Creativity Festival 2019 and later screened as part of the official selection in the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival.
Said Kane, “Marc and I are thrilled to be partnering with Samuel Goldwyn Films, a company with deep roots in the world of quality film. We couldn’t think of a better fit to bring this film to audiences in the U.S.”
The deal was negotiated by Ben Feingold from Samuel Goldwyn with Kirk D’Amico from Myriad on behalf of the filmmakers.
Kind’s credits include Spin City, Gotham, American Dad and Amazon’s Red Oaks as well as such movies as Oscar Best Picture winner Ago, Pixar’s Inside Out and the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man.

Adam Brody (The O.C.) stars as Matt Kane, a successful, middle-class lawyer who moves into a spacious new house with his heavily pregnant wife Larissa (Silicon Valley‘s Amanda Crew). We continue our conversation with directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland, discussing Stanley Kubrick's Lolita connection to Errol Flynn, costume designer Orry-Kelly's role beyond the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis and Ethel Barrymore in Hollywood, and the palettes in Otto Preminger's Bonjour Tristesse, Richard Quine's Strangers When We Meet and Alfred Hitchcock's North By Northwest. Filmmaker tandem Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland know a thing or two about being on opposite ends of luck. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but after breaking out with Quinceañera at Sundance back in 2006 (it got picked up by Spc and generated good box-office numbers), the pair had difficulties setting up their sophomore feature. They got their groove back when they dug into Hollywood folklore and sifted thru silver screen legend Errol Flynn‘s timeline – the lucky actor who hit jackpot and had a life that mimicked the notion of rags to riches to rags. An example of a film that might have got lost in the abyss of films presented at Tiff last September, but that might nudge out an afterlife theatrically, The Wrap reports that Samuel Goldwyn Films have picked up The Last of Robin Hood. A fall release is expected.

Stars: Natasha Loring, Matt Kane, Richard Dillane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings | Written by Sid Bennett, Jay Basu | Directed by Sid Bennett
The Dinosaur Project is the (fictional) story of a missing Congo expedition and the findings of the Cryptozoological Society to audiences around the world. The film features stunning recovered footage of creatures thought to be extinct for 65 million years. As the search for the missing crew continues, questions remain about the source of the missing footage and the manner in which it was discovered.
Before I go any further, here’s the now-defacto disclaimer: This is a found-footage movie. And you all know how much I despise the sub-genre. When it’s done wrong it’s usually done Very wrong and when it’s good… Well I can’t remember the last time it was! What also works against The Dinosaur Project is that you just...

In the grand scheme of things, there is a really small minority of actors who can claim to have appeared in a film about dinosaurs, yet joining that exclusive collective are young actors Matt Kane and Natasha Loring, stars of the upcoming adventure The Dinosaur Project – and we had the opportunity to speak to the pair ahead of the film’s release.
Sib Bennett’s found footage thriller is set in the Congolese jungle, where we follow a group of explorers who stumble across a colony of dinosaurs. Kane plays Luke – a troublesome youngster who sneaks himself on the trip to be alongside his father, whilst Loring undertakes the role of Dr. Liz Draper.
The pair discuss what it’s like working closely with CGI, the challenges posed by the found-footage genre, whilst Kane also tells us of his admiration for on-screen father Richard Dillane. The pair also discuss working with director Bennett,...

★☆☆☆☆ The found footage format is beginning to feel more than a little tired these days, no more so than in Sid Bennett's genre mash-up The Dinosaur Project (2012). Here we follow the apparent endeavours of the British Cryptozoological Society as they embark on an expedition into the dark heart of the Congo in search of an extinct plesiosaur. Seasoned explorer Jonathan Marchant (Richard Dillane) leads the team of intrepid explorers, only to discover that his teenage son Luke (Matt Kane) has snuck along for the ride.

If there is one thing you can say about Sid Bennett’s The Dinosaur Project, is that it is exactly what you would expect from a found footage orientated, British film about dinosaurs. And that, unfortunately, is not a positive acknowledgement.
The film begins as a couple of local inhabitants in the Congolese jungle find a bag which has tapes of footage within it, documenting a British group of explorers’ improbable journey into the jungle where they discovered a colony of dinosaurs. Amongst those ambitious explorers – who had set off to Africa based on sightings of an unidentifiable sea creature – are Marchant (Richard Dillane), his troublesome teenage son Luke (Matt Kane), Dr. Liz Draper (Natasha Loring), and Charlie (Peter Brooke), amongst others.
As the group’s helicopter crashes in the wilderness, they find themselves stranded, and as they delve deeper into the forest, they unearth a settlement of the creatures that had been presumed extinct,...

For the most part, found-footage films have largely been couched in the horror genre, and it’s always nice to see when they take a new direction.

A new and admittedly less interesting exclusive quad poster for new British adventure thriller 'The Dinosaur Project' has arrived. It's not a patch on the previous quad, featured below, but just another reminder that the cool looking feature is set to hit UK theatres next month. The Sid Bennett helmed horror is somewhere between 'Jurassic Park' and 'Monsters' and uses the found footage style to showcase a small expedition group who discover a lost prehistoric world. It stars gorgeous blonde Brit Natasha Loring ('Beaver Falls') as well as Matt Kane ('The Cut'), Peter Brooke ('Wrong Turn 5''), Richard Dillane ('Argo') and Stephen Jennings ('Starship Troopers 3: Marauder'). Studio Canal have released a new trailer for their movie, The Dinosaur Project. Not sure what to make of it but I do know that i’d quite like to watch out when it’s release August 10th. It stars Natasha Loring, Richard Dillane, Matt Kane, Peter Brooke, Stephen Jennings and is directed by Sid Bennett. Not that this looks especially big budget compared to the Jurassic Park franchise but it looks pretty impressive nonetheless.

Back in May StudioCanal has announced The Dinosaur Project which has already commenced principal photography in South Africa. Yet to settle on a title, the IMDb is listing Peter Brooke (Red Lights, The Dark Knight) cast as "Charlie Rutherford", Natasha Loring as "Dr. Liz Draper" and Matt Kane. In November 2010, TV programmakers Sid Bennett and Tom Pridham and producer Nick Hill walked into the London office of StudioCanal with an idea for a movie "about a father-and-son documentary team who discover dinosaurs in the African jungle." They had an outline, a showreel, a budget, a plan for the vfx and a clear timetable to progress rapidly into production -- but no script. StudioCanal took the bait. Budget is under $16 million. Check out the official Afm synopsis and art for what's being described as "the most exciting dinosaur action movie since Jurassic Park!

The project is described as “Jurassic Park meets Blair Witch in the style of District 9.” But producer Nick Hill also notes: “It’s not grainy hand-held; it will look beautiful and crisp and clear.”
