Director Morten Tyldum and writer Graham Moore, the team behind "The Imitation Game," are attached to a film adaptation of Moore's upcoming novel "The Last Days Of Night" which is currently out to financiers. Also onboard are Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky as producers.
The film will deal with the rivalry between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse over plans to bring electricity to America, with the film essentially working as a courtroom drama. With Edison winning the race to the patent office, he sues his only remaining rival George Westinghouse for the unheard of sum of one billion dollars.
To defend himself, Westinghouse hires an untested twenty-six-year-old fresh out of Columbia Law School named Paul Cravath who must go up against the formidable, wily, and dangerous Edison and so takes greater and greater risks. A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.
And now Matthew McConaughey saunters on stage to announce best actress. Julianne Moore, five times a nominee at the Oscars is the favourite. Will she get it this time for Still Alice? Yes she’s got...

The 68th British Academy Film Awards -- or the BAFTAs, to most -- were handed out this evening at the Royal Opera House in London. Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" ended up taking home three big prizes, including Best Picture and Best Director trophies that were definitely not sure things after it lost the PGA and DGA prizes. "Whiplash" and "The Theory of Everything" also won three, but it was Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" which ended up with the night's biggest overall haul, winning five. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!
Wamg was in the thick of nomination morning fever at the home of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.
Among the films in the running for the top prize -- known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures -- are "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash."
But it's the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. "Selma," "Unbroken," and "Into the Woods" all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies' Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.
On the television front, "American Horror Story: Freak Show," "Fargo," "The Normal Heart," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "Sherlock" all scored nominations in the long-form television category.

The origins of "The Imitation Game" date back to 2009 when producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky first became aware of Alan Turing’s story when Prime Minister Gordon Brown apologized on behalf of the government for its treatment of the codebreaker after World War II. "Our first reaction was surprise because we had never heard of Alan Turing before," reveals Ostrowsky during a webcam chat with Gold Derby (watch below). "We immediately started researching his story and found it incredibly compelling." -Break- Ostrowsky and Grossman then convinced Turing biographer Andrew Hodges that they were the perfect duo to bring his book to the screen, despite having no produced film credits. "We optioned the book, came back to the States and tried to set it up, but didn't really know what that entailed," says Grossman. She eventually met scripter Graham Moore at a party, and was impressed with his enthusiasm for Turing's stor.

On a very cold day in Seattle back in November I sat down with Graham Moore, screenwriter of The Imitation Game, an adaptation of Andrew Hodges book "Alan Turing: The Enigma", telling the story of British mathematician Alan Turing played to perfection by Benedict Cumberbatch, a performance that will almost certainly earn him an Oscar nomination. In fact, Cumberbatch won't likely be alone when it comes Oscar time for Imitation Game as the film is looked at as one of the front-runners for Best Picture and Moore himself is considered a very strong contender for not only a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, but he is looked at by many as the front-runner to win. While we didn't talk Oscars in our conversation, we did discuss various aspects of his screenplay (download it here) from the film's opening lines, the fractured timeline narrative as well as the film's ending and what we didn't see.

They also talk about how easy it was (and why) to get Benedict Cumberbatch and the rest of the top-flight cast – which includes Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Matthew Goode and Charles Dance – to sign on. The pair and fellow producer Nora Grossman were speaking at The Contenders, Deadline’s annual Oscar showcase, with our Pete Hammond.

This story first appeared in the Nov. 14 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. It all began a mere five years ago: Ido Ostrowsky, then 30, had just finished a stint as an assistant on Gossip Girl, where he spent his days transcribing a roomful of writers' thoughts into working outlines. Meanwhile, his friend Nora Grossman, then 26, was out of work, having exited her post as a creative executive for Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring's company, where she schlepped coffee and answered phones. When it came to telling the big-screen story of Alan Turing — the World War II British mathematician who cracked the Nazi’s submarine code Enigma and was later sentenced for gross indecency for being gay — the The Imitation Game was more than just a run-of-the-mill biopic for the cast led by Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.
“People were upset that Turing wasn’t pardoned and the actors were aware of the growing discontent (in the UK) that he wasn’t given his proper due,” said Imitation Game producer Ido Ostrowsky. “His resonance was never lost on the cast.”
Ostrowsky, along with director Morten Tyldum and producer Nora Grossman, described their uphill challenges in making the World War II drama last night during the Awardsline Screening for Imitation Game at the Sundance Sunset 5 Theater in Hollywood. Deadline Hollywood’s Dominic Patten moderated the session before the standing-room-only screening.

Hollywood got a touch of British class on Thursday night as Robert Downey Jr., Mike Leigh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mark Ruffalo, Emma Watson and Dame Judi Dench all were honored at the 2014 Britannia Awards. If you’re in the race, it never hurts to turn up at these things already looking like a winner and getting to make an acceptance speech. And though they didn’t sport any winners of this...

Los Angeles — The last four years have been a whirlwind for screenwriter Graham Moore. After seizing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to tell the story of a childhood hero, his script based on Alan Turing's life — "The Imitation Game" — lit up the industry, landing at the top of The Black List (an annual compendium of hot unpublished screenplays). He was given the rare opportunity as a writer to see production all the way through as an Executive Producer, moving with the project in and out of the studio system, and in the mountains of Colorado last week, he witnessed the film catch fire after finally premiering at the Telluride Film Festival. Now the 32-year-old finds himself working alongside directors like Michael Mann and Marc Forster, living the dream after having the best possible alignment of stars on his first major industry experience. With "The Imitation Game" set for another big coming out...
