★★☆☆☆Based on the previously well-documented true story of the West Memphis Three, Canadian director Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot (2013) attempts to dramatise Mara Leveritt's novelisation of the same name. The result is a melodramatic, calculable and subsequently dull procedural that makes you baffled by its inertness. When three boys are found brutally murdered in an area ominously known as the "Devil's Den", locals - including one of the boys' mother's Pam Hobbs (Reese Witherspoon) - are left paralysed. Three teenagers, Damien (James Hamrick), Jessie (Kristopher Higgins) and Jason (Seth Meriwether), are soon charged as accused members of this sinister satanic cult.

The 1993 murders of three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, has been explored time and time again, in documentaries like HBO’s Paradise Lost trilogy and Peter Jackson’s West of Memphis, but pop culture can’t seem to leave the sensational case alone. The question of whether Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. were actually guilty of the savage crimes seems to destined never to be definitively answered, though most films about the case have emphasized how tenuous links between the trio and the murders actually were.
Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan’s dramatization of the investigation and subsequent trials, features bankable Hollywood stars like Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon, and that star power makes this retelling more likely to appeal to the masses than the documentary coverage. That’s why it’s so unfortunate that Egoyan never manages to do right by his powerful source material.

The West Memphis Three case was the subject of Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky’s much-lauded Paradise Lost trilogy (1996, 2000, 2011), as well as Amy Berg’s 2012 West of Memphis. Each documentary chronicled the ongoing evolution of a uniquely American tragedy: the wrongful convictions of three teenage outcasts in the grotesque slayings of three eight-year-olds in West Memphis, Ark on May 5th, 1993. With one trailer already out there for Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan’s dramatized take on the West Memphis Three case, Apple is debuting a second, which features some new footage. The West Memphis Three are Jessie Misskelley (Kristopher Higgins), Damien Echols (James Hamrick) and Jason Baldwin (Seth Meriwether), who were accused of murdering three eight-year-old cub scouts in a satanic ritual in 1993. Subsequent investigations, not least in Joe Berlinger's Paradise Lost films, demolished the original "case", and the consensus now is that moral panic convicted them rather than anything in the way of evidence. While the three are now free, the Arkansas judge responsible stopped short of actually overturning their convictions, meaning that local law enforcement officials have not had to admit to or apologise for their egregious original work, and that Echols in particular is entitled to no compensation for his 17 years spent on Death Row.Scott Derrickson...

Devil's Knot, Atom Egoyan’s docudrama about the West Memphis Three, will arrive in U.S. theaters and on VOD on May 9. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, the movie recounts the tragic true story of three missing boys in the religious community of Memphis, Ark., and the frenzied rush to justice that condemned three teenagers to prison for a horrific crime. The West Memphis Three — Damien Echols, Jesse Misskelley Jr., and Jason Baldwin — were convicted in 1994 of murdering the three boys, in part because of hyped suspicions that the trio were satanists. Doubts about the three men’s guilt were widespread,...

You may already know the awful story of the wrongfully convicted West Memphis Three from Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's excellent trilogy of Paradise Lost documentaries. Devil’s Knot, a docudrama about the tangled and still-loaded West Memphis Three case, directed by Atom Egoyan, is for the most part a tense and absorbing movie. It’s the intelligent, detail-jammed, well-executed version of what we used to call “a TV movie” — a phrase you can’t really use anymore, since it once connoted a certain second-rate, connect-the-dots Madame Tussauds biopic quality that’s become irrelevant in the age of HBO. (There was never a “TV movie” like Behind the Candelabra or Recount.) Yet that term also summoned up the basic, childlike voyeuristic appeal of seeing interesting actors...

Where the Truth Weakly Lies; West Memphis Less Effective in Non-Docu Treatment
Atom Egoyan has carved a career out of films focused on misunderstood and alienated outsiders, whose personal truths are often murky. The case of the infamous West Memphis Three (exhaustively explored in a number of documentaries, including last year’s festival selection “West of Memphis“) would naturally be a draw for Egoyan thematically. However, instead of expounding on where the truth lies (if you will), this somewhat fictionalized narrative remains dead in the turgid water.
Based in part on Mara Leveritt’s case study ‘Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three’, the film follows private investigator Ron Lax (Colin Firth) and his attempt to uncover the questionable hidden pieces in the local Memphis Arkansas Police’s case against Damien Echols (James Hamrick), Jessie Misskelley Jr. (Kristopher Higgins) and Jason Baldwin (Seth Meriwether), the three...

The Way, Way Back — for reasons that should not concern you or I — only cast its lead, generally low-profile actor after grabbing a strong lineup of entirely notable names. With the big business finally out of the way, though, it’s back to nabbing recognizable faces. Next and, possibly, for the last time, Deadline reports that Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, and Rob Corddry have been placed in the directorial debut of Descendants writers (and recent Oscar winners) Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. And, no, the story doesn’t give specifics as to their involvement.
So it’s fortunate that we have a general logline for the film as a whole. In The Way, Way Back, Liam James (The Killing) stars as a teenager whose irresponsible mother (Toni Collette) and stepfather (Corddry‘s Seeking a Friend co-star, Steve Carell) drive him to find a job working at a water park, whereat...

Variety reports that Seth Meriwether has been tapped for the role of West Memphis 3 defendant Jason Baldwin (the outlet notes that earlier reports that Justin Castor was set for the role were “premature,” as the actor had not yet received an official offer at the time of it hitting the wire). Ever since the West Memphis Three were freed from prison last summer by entering Alford pleas, there have been a few different groups scrambling to retell their story on the big screen. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky already followed the events quite exhaustively with their three Paradise Lost documentaries, but now that there is a definitive conclusion, at least three more adaptations have cropped up. Peter Jackson produced a documentary called West of Memphis that premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and there are now two competing fictional features in development: one directed by Atom Egoyan and the other apparently being produced by Johnny Depp. Egoyan's film, entitled The Devil's Knot, will likely be the first one out of the gate, and this week they have made a slew of casting announcements including their choices for the WM3 themselves. According to Variety, they finally locked down the key role of Damien Echols this week,...

Even in its recent casting spurt, the role of Damien Echols has been a specter hanging over Devil’s Knot. The most well-known, outspoken, and controversial member of the West Memphis 3 is not only bound to play a major role in the Atom Egoyan film, but also, as a result, needs to be played just right for much of the drama to work. So, who would play him?
Unless you go to Wesleyan University or, at the very least, attend their shows, it’ no one you’ve ever heard of. ShowBlitz has learned that one of their drama students, James Hamrick, impressed Egoyan so much with an audition that he’s officially won the role over “dozens” of established young actors. With this, the film’s West Memphis 3 have been locked in; Kristopher Higgins will play Jessie Misskelley, and Justin Castor is set to appear as Jason Baldwin.

And the star power keeps amping up for director Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot, based on the events surrounding the recently freed West Memphis Three, as both Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone, "The Wire") and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, "True Blood") are in early talks for roles.
Per Variety these two deals are in the early stages since DeHaan is getting married this summer and his shooting dates still have to be finalized, as do Ryan's. If cast, Ryan would play private detective Ron Lax's soon-to-be ex-wife, and DeHaan would play a teen who had some history with the three murdered boys.
Colin Firth, Mireille Enos, Reese Witherspoon, Collette Wolfe, Kristopher Higgins, Alessandro Nivola, and Kris Polaha all star in the drama about the West Memphis 3 based on journalist Mara Leveritt's bestselling book of the same name.

Oh, I guess Devil’s Knot isn’t slowing down. The recent slate of minor casting had — due in part to plain old experience and, in some ways, the project’s apparent schedule — made yours truly think the film had ceased finding the big names — but I never really know what I’m talking about, either. Now, Variety reports that Amy Ryan and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Place Beyond the Pines) are both up to take a role in Atom Egoyan‘s film, though schedules and such need to be worked out before either can officially board.
A secure deal would see Ryan playing the “soon-to-be ex-wife” of Colin Firth‘s character, Ron Lax, whose real-life investigations into and public support of the West Memphis 3 act as Knot‘s center. DeHaan‘s role is a bit more enigmatic and open to possibility, being “a teen who had some history with...

Since this is only coming a day after the last announcement, one could get the impression that Devil’s Knot is, after months of pre-production and relative quiet, finally shaping up for a production start. Deadline reports that Kristoffer Polaha (Mad Men, Ringer), Collette Wolfe (Young Adult, Observe and Report), and Justin Castor (Glee) are either in talks to or have already joined Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon, Mireille Enos, Kristopher Higgins, Alessandro Nivola, all of whom are working under director Atom Egoyan.
In his West Memphis 3-centered drama, Polaha will be seen as Val Price, a public defender that the three boys felt hurt their own chances; Wolfe is playing Glori Shettles, the assistant to Ron Lax, a public investigator played by Firth; and Castor is negotiating to appear as one of the three suspects, Jason Baldwin. (This makes the most public and controversial member of the group, Damien Echols,...

Things looked just a bit shaky when Tom Hiddleston took the reigns for Michael Fassbender — in part, for me, because we hadn’t heard anything since late-January story — so I can, for lack of a better term, only take this as good news for Only Lovers Left Alive. In a new update, it’s reported that Anton Yelchin is next to sign for the Jim Jarmusch-helmed vampire love story, which also features John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, and Mia Wasikowska. [Deadline]
Much as I’d love to tell you what Jarmusch is up to with his next film… well, I can’t, other than repeat the vague description of “an unusual love story between two vampires who have been in love for centuries.” Who needs more, though? With this filmmaker directing this impressive a collection in what’s, more likely than not, a pretty out-there tale, most of us are already...

With "Young Adult" barely out of our minds, lensing is excitingly already underway on Jason Reitman's next directorial effort, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's coming-of-age story "Labor Day." The project has now added a trio of talent with Alexie Gilmore ("World's Greatest Dad"), Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") and Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") all joining in unnamed supporting roles. The story centers on an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) who is taken in by a depressed single mother (Kate Winslet) and her teen son (Gattlin Griffith) over a Labor Day weekend with Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski, Maika Monroe, Brighid Fleming and James Van Der Beek also co-starring.
