J Balvin has dropped his rendition of Metallica’s classic “Wherever I May Roam,” one of the more anticipated covers from the upcoming Metallica Blacklist collection that accompanies the heavy metal legends’ massive Black Album reissue.
As opposed to a straight cover of the Black Album classic, the video for Balvin’s version finds the reggaeton star — rocking a Metallica “Metal Up Your Ass” shirt — dropping new verses over the classic “Wherever I May Roam” riffs. The latter half of the track fuses in Metallica’s own version of the song,...

Never forget that John Malkovich is an actor who once starred in a film called Being John Malkovich, in which Cameron Diaz enters John Malkovich's head in order to have sex with Catherine Keener. He likes weird things! So it makes perfect sense that Malkovich would be like, "Yes, David Lynch, I will recreate scenes from your movies and TV shows, up to and including the Lady in the Radiator from Eraserhead!" Also, the actor was no doubt happy to help Lynch raise money for his David Lynch Foundation, which helps bring the evidence-based practice of Transcendental Meditation (Tm) to at-risk populations. In the first released vignette from the project entitled Psychogenic Fugue, Malkovich plays Agent Dale Cooper, the Twin Peaks protagonist originally portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan. It's a deft, though not entirely straight-faced, recreation of the scene from Season 1, Episode 2 that ends with the indelible line: "Diane, never...

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Demolition,” a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Wild”) features a pretty solid cast including Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. Here’s the film’s synopsis (and you can read our review from the Toronto International Film Festival here). Demolition follows Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker who loses his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law, Phil (Chris Cooper), to pull it together Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns.

My Morning Jacket descended upon The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday for a performance of "Tropics," an expansive track off their latest LP, The Waterfall.

In a new interview with Billboard, True Detective music supervisor T Bone Burnett revealed the meaning behind using Leonard Cohen's Popular Problems track "Nevermind" as Season Two's opening music alongside why different verses of the song were used in various episodes.
"To me, 'Nevermind' is the song of the century so far, coming from one of the wisest men in our culture," Burnett said. "I look at it as an extraordinary gift to the audience. It feels very much like Los Angeles right now: beautiful, dark, brooding, dangerous, covert.

In October 2013, My Morning Jacket retreated to the coastal town of Stinson Beach, Calif., just north of San Francisco, to start working on their seventh studio album. They were surrounded by redwood trees and the ocean, and recorded around 20 songs over the course of four months. “Everything is slightly supernatural there,” frontman Jim James says. “ We really responded to that.” The result is “The Waterfall,” a collection of 10 songs that finds the band exploring love, loss, philosophical statements, and naturalistic imagery.

Frequent listeners of the Sound On Sight podcast would have heard me discuss my day job working with kids. For the unfamiliar, I am the director of a community center, and the coordinator of a summer camp here in Montreal. At the start of the summer, I was talking to my kids about music and I discovered that none of them knew what a mix tape was, much less an audio cassette – so, I decided it would be a good idea to make them some complications. Of course, I’m not recording these on actual cassettes, but nevertheless, they get the idea. As it turns out, the kids love it, and now that the storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy revolves around a mix tape, they keep asking me to make more. Here’s the most recent compilation I’ve produced following Making Time. This one is simply titled, Awesome Mix Tape Vol.

Yes, "Dallas Buyers Club" is, reductively speaking, an "AIDS drama," but we've come a long way since Bruce Springsteen made us weep with "Streets of Philadelphia." The soundtrack for the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starrer is just as energetic and vivacious as his lead character Ron Woodroof, and details of the tunes you'll be hearing along the way (and some inspired by the movie) have now arrived. The sixteen-track disc doesn't waste a moment, bringing along Canadian sisters Tegan and Sara, Jared Leto's own band 30 Seconds To Mars, knobtwiddler Awolnation, roots dudes My Morning Jacket and more. If a classic vibe is more your style, Shuggie Otis kicks this off with some soul, while T. Rex brings up the rear with some rock 'n' roll. And put all together, it's the kind of playlist collection you generally don't see in awards season movies, which tend lean more heavily on traditional scores.

With My Morning Jacket, Wilco and Bob Dylan touring together -- under the name AmericanaramA Festival, no less -- you didn't think they Wouldn't cover The Band's "The Weight" together, did you? Now there's video and audio proof: listen to Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Jim James of Mmj and Dylan all take their turns on putting the load right on themselves. I'm sure Levon Helm is somewhere, nodding, like "Of course." The track was performed at the bands' July 24 stop in Virginia Beach. Mmj, Wilco and Bob Dylan have one more stop together, in Hoboken on July 26. What other collaborations would...

Toyota Park in Bridgeview played played host Friday to folk-rock royalty.
Bob Dylan, My Morning Jacket and Chicago's own Wilco -- as well as Richard Thompson -- played the Chicago area as part of the Americanarama mini-festival.
Photographer Joshua Mellin was at the show and reported Wilco and My Morning Jacket's cover of Neil Young's "Cinammon Girl" among the evening's highlights. Though the event was sold out, the concert was somewhat sparsely attended -- perhaps due to Richard Plant's concurrent show at Taste of Chicago in the more centrally-located Grant Park.
Mellin shared some shots below.

Jim James and John Oates "Superjammed" up a storm at Bonnaroo over the weekend. The My Morning Jacket frontman and Hall & Oates singer-songwriter teamed up with The Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a "Rock n' Soul Dance Party Superjam" at the Tennessee music festival on Saturday, on which they were joined by such surprise guests as R&B freak-soulster R. Kelly (getting in on a cover version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come") and '80s rock god Billy Idol (T. Rex's "Bang a Gong"). You can check out fan-shot video of the Kelly...

One of last year’s top sellers was “Tuskegee,” a collection of Lionel Richie’s greatest hits newly recorded by the ex-Commodore with a passel of top country music artists, including Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, Shania Twain and Blake Shelton. [More after the jump...] Can John Fogerty duplicate that success with “Wrote A Song For Everyone,” his new set out today (May 28) that pairs him with everyone from The Foo Fighters to Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert and My Morning Jacket on remakes his best-loved Creedence Clearwater Revival tunes? In a word, no... but that’s not because it’s not a strong project...

Wrote A Song For Everyone
On paper this was a bad idea. Re-recording classic hits with younger, more relevant stars is the kind of tired move you would expect from artists such as Rod Stewart or Tony Bennett, but John Fogerty’s 9th solo album ‘Wrote A Song For Everyone’ gives his greatest hits a shot in the arm (not that they needed it) and an immediacy and urgency that rarely comes across from studio recordings.
John Fogerty made his name fronting and writing for swamp rock legends Creedence Clearwater Revival in the 1960’s. In those five short years he produced an almost non-stop stream of hits; ‘Proud Mary’, ‘Fortunate Son’ and ‘Bad Moon Rising’ are a few amongst dozens. His solo work began in 1985 with ‘Centerfield’ and he hasn’t stopped since. Playing live he performs with the ability and energy of a man a quarter of his age...

When I wrote about hearing John Fogerty’s new album, “Wrote A Song For Everyone,” which pairs him with acts like Miranda Lambert, My Morning Jacket, Bob Seger and Keith Urban on some of his best-known songs, I raved about the raw energy of his remake of “Fortunate Son” with the Foo Fighters. Now you can hear for yourself. [More after the jump...] As he does on almost every song on the album, Fogerty lets the guests take the first verse. Grohl sounds a little ragged as he leans into the anti-war song, but by the time he screams at the...

Dallas Green is no longer the elephant in the room. Or, perhaps more accurately, City And Colour isn't.
"The Hurry And The Harm," out June 4, is the fourth release for Green under the City And Colour moniker, and the first since his split from Alexisonfire. Green first came to prominence as the singer in the singing/screaming post-hardcore act, and his decision to quit and focus on his increasingly popular acoustic solo work precipitated the group's break-up in 2011. It was an awkward situation made all the more so by the fact that his departure was kept quiet for a year, first from his own bandmates, then from the public.
Green comes clean about his feelings on the whole affair on the break-up song "Of Space And Time," the first track leaked from The Hurry And The Harm, singing, "There's an elephant in the back of the room / and it's standing...

Jim James' hair is gloriously alive. During solos where the My Morning Jacket frontman hunches over his guitar, the enormous mane overshadows everything else, giving the impression that strands of hair are furiously strumming the instrument. The opening of James' set on Saturday at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, however, began in a more composed manner. The multi-instrumentalist and singer, attired in a suit and tie, led the evening with songs exclusively from his ambitiously titled solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God, released Feb. 5. Jim James newly announced solo album is supposed to sort of sound like a robot's "hazy dream" -- but the first track has still got the singer's trademark My Morning Jacket croon. The alt-rock frontman debuted a new song, "Know Til Now," alongside the news, via Pitchfork, that he'll be releasing nine songs from a solo project next spring. "I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time," said James in a press release describing the project. "Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes

The last time My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James went solo, it was as Yim Yames on his 2009 Ep, Tribute To. But in a press release, James announced that he has been recording under his own name for his first full-length, Regions Of Light And Sound Of God. The album—slated for a Feb. 5 release on CD, vinyl, and digital—was inspired by the 1929 graphic novel God's Man about an artist's relationship with temptation and love. James engineered and played the instruments for all of the tracks himself, saying that his goal was to make ...

Cincinnati -- President Barack Obama is counting on former President Bill Clinton and Bruce Springsteen, top surrogates for his campaign, to carry his message. But he also has enlisted an army of A-list performers and public figures -- from Lady Gaga to Billie Jean King, from Jay-z to Crosby, Stills and Nash – to promote his re-election.
The Obama campaign provided a who's-who of 181 actors, musicians, authors, athletes, mayors, Congress members, and more that fit any and all demographic groups in the president's target zone. All are being deployed to carry his message to television and radio in the waning days of a nip-and-tuck campaign.
On Saturday, Stevie Wonder played an unannounced concert for voters waiting in line to vote early in Cleveland. Wonder opened a rally for Obama by rocking the arena at the University of Cincinnati with a rendition of "Keep on Running."
