Producer Sue Vertue and location manager Patrick Horvath share the experience of filming in the picturesque Slovak town of Banská Štiavnica, the setting for the BBC/Netflix miniseries Dracula. Travelling on a carriage across snowy landscapes, Mr Harker approaches a medieval castle in the middle of the night. Suddenly he is attacked by a swarm of bats, while two horrifying red eyes stare at him. Banská Štiavnica is one of the finalists of the Eufcn Location Award, the annual prize for European film locations organised by the European Film Commissions Network (Eufcn) in collaboration with Cineuropa. The location was submitted by the Slovak Film Commission. In this article, producer Sue Vertue and location manager Patrick Horvath share the experience of filming in the picturesque Slovak town of Banská Štiavnica, the setting for the BBC/Netflix miniseries Dracula. Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Radio Silence’s opener The Way Out really sets the tone for the rest of the film,...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Orchard TV. **there is one spoiler after the review. Directors: Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath and Radio Silence. Writers: Roxanne Benjamin, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, David Bruckner, Susan Burke, Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath. Cast: Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Hannah Marks, Tipper Newton, Brad Miska and Kristina Pesic. Southbound is an indie horror anthology film, from four directors. Patrick Horvath, of The Signal (2007) fame, brings one of four stories. Though, an initial viewing would make the film appear as if it is five short films; the circular ending brings the film back upon itself. Southbound also brings an inconsistent morality to the screen as one good character finds escape, while another does not. The film also keeps its characters' histories and motivations hidden. This makes an interpretation of the plot difficult. But, the writers do agree on a trapped theme.

There are few things in the film world more difficult to successfully cobble together than the dreaded horror anthology. With its mixture of narratives, creative voices and actors/actresses, more often than not the horror anthology picture feels closer akin to the type of short film programs many people are flocking to this Oscar season than a fully formed, singular motion picture. For every great one like Trick r’ Treat or Three Extremes there’s a complete dud like the dreadful ABC’s Of Death or the unwatchable Little Deaths. A tough balance to strike between genuine terror and shifting creative visions, the success stories seem to be the exception to the lesser picture’s rule.
That’s what makes the latest attempt at mastering this concept, Southbound, so special. Four directors are accounted for here, including Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath and the runaway stars of this show...

With February being a short month, genre fans only have a handful of horror and sci-fi arriving on VOD to look forward to over the next few weeks. One of my own most anticipated movies for 2016, the horror anthology Southbound, makes its VOD debut on February 9th, courtesy of The Orchard. For those of curious about two of the more buzzed-about remakes in some time – Martyrs and Cabin Fever – both films arrive on VOD on February 2nd and February 12th respectively.
Other notable titles hitting VOD this February include All Hallow’s Eve 2, Convergence, The Veil, Uncaged and Riddle Room.
All Hallows' Eve 2 (Rlj Entertainment) – February 2nd
Alone on Halloween, a young woman finds a mysterious VHS tape on her doorstep—a tape that shows a series of gruesome and ghastly tales that appear to be all too real. But these terrifying glimpses of damned souls are not the only horrors that stalk her.

Horror anthologies are all the rage, with both up-and-coming and established filmmakers contributing to works like the extensive ABCs of Death films, and the found footage V/H/S trilogy. Now comes Southbound, a new collection featuring horror shorts directed by V/H/S alums Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner (The Signal), and Radio Silence, as well as Patrick Horvath (Entrance). A trailer and clip of the film’s seven-minute opener were just released, providing a peek at the terror to come.
First, the clip serves as a promising cold opener, dropping the viewer right in the middle of the action as two men in a classic pickup are pursued by dark, spectral beings – and then things start to get weird. While the footage recalls, to some degree, Twilight Zone: The Movie, details have painted Southbound as a twist on the disconnected style of previous anthology films. In an interview,...

Demonic activity, skinheads, and psychopaths: these are the words one might use to describe the upcoming genre films of 2016. From a possessed painter, to a devilish leg wound, to full-on war waged within the confines of a futuristic apartment complex, blood flies and fingers point in what looks to be one of the most intense, purposely-paced and experimental years for independent films to date.
Traces of David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Scanners, Stuart Rosenberg's The Amityville Horror, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Nicholas Hytner's The Crucible can be found within these electrifying new entries from promising, emerging artists, proving that pulling from the past can wind up making a project feel fresh and new.
Although many of the films carry similar traits and themes like directorial debuts, single set locations, cult activity, and the ever-present presence of the devil's unholy spirit, each of these features is unique in its own persona.

The first seven minutes for Southbound have been released. This horror anthology features five tales of despair and desolation. The five features have been developed by: Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S), David Bruckner (The Signal), Patrick Horvath and Radio Silence. And, the first seven minutes have been taken from Radio Silence's short film. The full movie clip is hosted below. The clip shows two bloodied men and a long stretch of highway. They see dark figures in the desert and decide to take a break, at a local rest stop. Here, the customer service is hostile and so are the mens' pursuers. Events get even stranger as it becomes apparent that there is no escape from this isolated locale. Southbound will have a limited theatrical release on February 5th, 2016. Following that, the film will be available through Video-on-demand formats, on February 9th. More details on the film are available past the break.

The horror anthology resurgence continues next month with the release of Southbound, a new four-story feature from some of the filmmakers behind the V/H/S trilogy. Their latest follows several characters facing the consequences of past transgressions, but while the segments vary from great to merely okay the film’s biggest strength is a terrifically cohesive structure. From my review: “Rather than fade to black between stories or feature title cards for each, the film transitions naturally between the tales. As one ends the camera moves to another door, a different seat, or the next car approaching on the road and smoothly introduces the characters occupying the next story. It make the entire experience one continuing feature unfolding in a common world of regrets and past sins, and that theme is stronger for it.” Check out the first trailer below. Radio Silence opens and closes the film with the middle segments coming courtesy of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner...

The first trailer for the horror thriller Southbound has been released. This film had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. A film anthology, Southbound features five interlocking terrorific tales. Set to release in early February, the film's first trailer shows several characters on a desolate road. What lies ahead at the next turn? Blood. The film has been shot by four talented film directors, including Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S), David Bruckner (The Signal), Patrick Horvath and Radio Silence. The film's full, theatrical trailer is hosted here. A few details on each short film have been released. One story involves a band on their way to a show. Another story involves one man's struggle to just get home, while another man searches for his long lost sister. Will any of these characters make it out of the desert? The first trailer cuts from story to story. One...

The V/H/S series has crashed and burned badly, but producers Brad Miska and Roxanne Benjamin have moved on to a different anthology of horror shorts, now joined by a new cadre of collaborators. Four directors (Benjamin, fellow V/H/S veterans David Bruckner and Radio Silence, and Patrick Horvath) have spun out the five different scary stories which make up Southbound. But whereas many anthologies are united only by a theme, these segments share locations and cross over certain characters, all within the same vista of an undefined stretch of desert in the American Southwest. This, however, does not result in any appreciable improvement over generic indie gore-mongering.
The various protagonists of Southbound are all either looking to right a past wrong or carrying deep-seated guilt over an old sin. The nameless desert is some kind of hell (the only even marginally clever part of the film is...

For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines, Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop. From the minds of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and the Radio Silence collective come five tales of open-road horror set to the soothing voice of Larry Fessenden’s DJ narration, and the ride is surly a worthy one. The segments rarely skip a beat, and showcase the same drifting intrigue that’s created by a desolate stretch of highway that connects them all. Nothing good ever happens in the middle of nowhere, but this series of gleefully unfortunate events tends to argue otherwise with the help of some gruesome tricks, brainwashed minds, and a few skeletal demons worth a fright.

Southbound
Written by Roxanne Benjamin, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, David Bruckner, Susan Burke, Dallas Hallam & Patrick Horvath
Directed by Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath & Radio Silence
USA, 2015
Heavily promoted as a film by the creators of V/H/S, Southbound is a horror anthology movie that eschews the found footage format in favor of applying a traditional cinematic narrative that recounts several interconnected tales. Southbound does a fantastic job taking advantage of the anthology format. The film successfully links all five of its stories together with creative tracking shots (Birdman style). The approach is slightly better than a novelty. Combining the various segments into a continuous timeline is a cool visual trick that carries the movie’s manic energy forward from story to story.
As is the case with anthologies, there isn’t much time to tell a story and each of Southbound’s protagonists gets dropped into their segment and really hits the ground running.

It's hard to know what kind of reaction The Pact II was going for. The moody lighting and gruesome subject matter suggest that at some point during its hour and a half run time, the film hopes that you will be scared, but it's clear pretty early on that writers/directors Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath aren't clear on just how to evoke such a feeling. They have all the ornaments down (serial killers, weird dreams), but when you put it all together, it doesn't feel like much.

While the Toronto International Film Festival has mostly garnered a reputation as a place to often get the first look at movies that go on to critical acclaim and Academy Awards, the festival’s Midnight Madness section, which is reserved for genre films, has built a following of its own as well, getting a more prominent showcase as the years have passed. This has, in turn, led to films such as Adam Wingard’s You’re Next and Gareth Evans’ The Raid to make their world premieres at the festival under this banner, making the lineup every year an announcement that genre fans anticipate. For the 2015 incarnation of the festival, Tiff has now announced their first wave of screenings.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Directors/writers: Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath. Cast: Caity Lotz, Camilla Luddington and Scott Michael Foster. It is strange to see a trailer as part of the film you already possess. It is even stranger to see that trailer mislabelled as The Pact (2012) and not The Pact II. Unfortunately, this is only the first step in a strange viewing experience, involving the Judas Killer. This time, the Judas Killer, who was killed in the first film, has a murderous admirer. More bodies begin to turn up, all around the protagonist, June (Camilla Luddington). But, who is this new killer? There will be many misdirections to lead you down the wrong path and all of the obfuscation grows tired, during a second viewing. A theme of surveillance is touched upon, but there are too many unfleshed and forgotten ideas here.

Fearlessly embracing emotionally and physically terrifying situations, in a courageous attempt to achieve your goals and overcome your fears, is an enthralling and powerful theme in the horror thriller, ‘The Pact II.’ Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, the writers and directors of the sequel to scribe and helmer Nicholas McCarthy’s 2012 horror film, ‘The Pact,’ dauntlessly approached combining the emotional arc of the series’ characters with terrifying physical scares, to emphasize their brave attempts to maintain control over their lives. Making a sequel to even a hit independent horror film can be a daunting task. It might not hold quite as much accountability as coming up with the next entry in the X-Men or Batman franchises, but still a nerve-wracking charge nonetheless. It’s a challenge Co-Directors Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath embraced when asked to helm the follow-up to Nicholas McCarthy’s supernatural thriller The Pact.
The Pact was a sleeper hit for Director / Writer Nicholas McCarthy who worked the film festival circuit and successfully secured theatrical and home entertainment distribution through heavy-hitters like IFC Films, E One Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. Reviews for the movie were mainly positive not only through major horror outlets like Shockya.com and Horror.com, but mainstream ones such as the Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Village Voice. Murky Contract Part Deux: Hallam & Horvath Continue to Stir a Slushy Cauldron
A vaguely administered narrative continues to plague the concept of what comprises The Pact 2, the sequel to Nicholas McCarthy’s 2012 first film, which had been based on his original short. Directing duo Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath take over the directorial and screenwriting reigns for this revolution. However, despite sharing the title and star of the predecessor, there’s little to significantly link this to the skimpy entrails of the first chapter, itself a film criticized for ambience but faltering in nearly every other department. This latest installment suffers from the same derivative issues, though correctly straddles a menacing tone, while at the same time offering up a committed cast this time around.
June Abbott (Camilla Luddington) is a young woman plagued by nightmares. This should come as no surprise considering her grisly occupation as someone who cleans up crime scenes.

The best that can be said of The Pact 2 is that its existence might draw the attention of more viewers to The Pact, a superior indie creep-out from 2012 whose creator, the writer-director Nicholas McCarthy, fashioned it according to three inviolable principles. One: Get the heroine (Caity Lotz) into picking-her-way-through-a-haunted-house scenes as often as possible. Two: Make those scenes wickedly tense and immersive, soaking viewers in her terror, syncing up our metabolisms to hers, giving us shadows to search and dark corners to cower from.
And, uh, three: Never let pass an opportunity to leer down her tank top.
The sequel, written and directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, mostly chucks those rules — for a while, new lead Camilla Lu...

When thinking of recent horror movie sequels garnering minimal demand, The Pact II could be one of the most prominent examples. I don’t care much for Nicholas McCarthy’s original 2012 haunter, a film that only made waves throughout hardcore genre communities, but such an under-the-radar lifespan didn’t stop a sequel from being greenlit – without the involvement of Nicholas McCarthy himself. Placed in the hands of co-directors Dallas Richard Hallam (Entrance) and Patrick Horvath (Die-ner), the Judas Killer lives once again in The Pact II, a direct sequel that strikes an impressively similar tone to McCarthy’s chilling signature style. My problems with the first film never complained about scares, though, only convoluted storytelling more focused on atmosphere than comprehension. Do Hallam and Horvath learn from McCarthy’s weaker notes? Yes and no – but we’ll get to that shortly.

Heading for release in U.S. theaters on October 10, The Pact 2 picks up where Nicholas McCartney's unsettling horror thriller left off. The film, directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath, also stars Camilla Luddington (Grey's Anatomy), Scott Michael Foster (Halt and Catch Fire, Greek), Patrick Fischler (2 Guns, Mad Men, Californication), and Haley Hudson (The Pact).Distributed by IFC Midnight,...

When The Pact dropped two years ago, it quietly snuck onto the scene and surprised everyone with how smartly written and genuinely creepy it was. It seems that with losing its connection with writer-director Nicholas McCarthy (who has gone on to direct this year's At the Devil's Door), The Pact 2pulls some punches and just can’t get the scares that the first one delivered.
The sequel, written and directed by Dallas Richard Hallam and Patrick Horvath (the duo who directed Entrance), tells the story of June and her boyfriend Daniel. Both are involved with law enforcement, Daniel is a beat cop who works nights and June cleans up crime scenes.
