The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

ESPN acknowledged it was “clearly wrong in submitting certain names going back to 2007” in light of a shocking report that reveals how the network skirted Emmy rules to help on-air talent rack up trophies.
Much of the report involved the stars of College GameDay, who picked up multiple Sports Emmys for Outstanding Weekly Studio Show between 2008 and 2018. Up until 2023, talent could not be included in a credit list for Outstanding Weekly Show; hosts, analysts and reporters on could win individual awards, but they couldn’t earn an Emmy if the show triumphed.
According to a report in The Athletic, ESPN got around the rule by creating fake names for the credit list it submitted for College GameDay. All were listed as associate producers. Once the show won for Outstanding Weekly Show, ESPN took the awards earned by those fake folks and had them re-engraved with the names of on-air personalities.

A stunning new report details more than a decade of fraudulent Sports Emmy submissions by ESPN that resulted in wrongfully obtained awards for the network’s on-air personalities.
In an exposé published Thursday by The Athletic, a sports-centric subdivision of The New York Times, it’s reported that since at least 2007 — but possibly dating as far back as 1997 — ESPN circumvented an Emmys rule that prohibited on-air talent from being awarded in the Outstanding Weekly Studio Show category.

ESPN has disciplined members of its staff who worked for years to secure Emmys for on-air personnel who were not normally eligible for the awards by using fake names and entering them in various categories, according to an investigation by The Athletic.
The probe found that ESPN has for more than a decade inserted fake personnel names in entries to win more than 30 Emmys, then took the awards, removed the fraudulent nameplates and had the statues engraved anew so they could be given to on-air staff. Among those who were given the ill-gotten awards are Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Chris Fowler, Desmond Howard and Samantha Ponder. Much of the activity seems to center around “College GameDay,” the Disney-backed sports-media outlet’s very popular college-football program.
“Some members of our team were clearly wrong in submitting certain names that may go back to 1997 in Emmy categories where they were not eligible for recognition or statuettes.

Marie Donoghue, who parlayed a stint at ESPN into a job helping Amazon break into the U.S. sports-media business, is leaving the company, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Amazon declined to comment.
Donoghue had been hired to oversee Prime Video’s global sports strategy, identifying and evaluating new sports opportunities, and led efforts to acquire the rights to “Thursday Night Football,” which has helped the tech giant gain traction among consumers and sports leagues over the last few years. Amazon has tried to weave new elements into the traditional game-watching process, offering the chance to call up stats and replays at the click of a button, as well as watch a group of “alterna-casts” aimed at different audience niches.
“We have already devoted a lot of time to thinking about how to use new technologies to drive viewing experiences,” Donoghue told Variety in 2021, in an interview.

Don’t adjust the tint on your television if you’re watching ESPN’s College GameDay today. Cohost Pat McAfee really is green.
McAfee admitted to throwing up into a trash can during the commercial breaks of today’s show. Food poisoning is being blamed.

He hadn’t been feeling well all morning… and vomit just flew. He got it into a trash can. I looked over my shoulder, ‘Where’s Pat?”‘
McAfee joked that a badly missed field goal was the source of his stomach upset.

After Amazon Prime Video spent the offseason doing what tech giants are wont to do — analyze and iterate — the company will kick off Thursday Night Football 2.0 tonight as the Minnesota Vikings visit the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last season marked the start of a $13.2 billion, 11-year exclusive rights deal with the NFL for Thursday games, which had been carried by linear networks and simulcast by Prime for several prior seasons. It also represented a milestone for the sports media business, with the standard-bearing league going all-in on streaming, risking a chaotic leap into the digital void that could have fomented viewer and advertiser confusion. The bet largely paid off.
“We were learning week to week, especially things that maybe you weren’t seeing,” said Jared Stacy, Director, Live Production, Prime Video, in an interview with Deadline at the company’s offices in New York’s Hudson Yards. “The big-picture headline is, it went really well for us.

When Amazon’s Prime Video streams a new “Black Friday” NFL game later this year, viewers won’t be greeted solely by a live match.
The company plans to offer commercials featuring its talent around the event, according to Danielle Carney, who heads up NFL sales for Amazon. During remarks made at an industry conference, Carney envisioned different “talent” being tapped to talk to viewers about possible buying opportunities. “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving, is typically seen as the first day of the U.S. holiday shopping season.
“We can be thoughtful about deals we are showing to those who are tuning in,” Carney said, a possible allusion to the fact that streamers can place ads in front of specific audiences by using data about subscribers as well as consumer information from particular sponsors.

Amazon Prime’s Thursday Night Football game between the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts was bad. So bad, that one local Denver television station felt the need to apologize.
The Colts beat the Broncos 12-9 in overtime, but that was more of an escape than a triumph. The game included a combined 12 punts, 10 sacks, six fumbles, four interceptions and no touchdowns.
“Sometimes a game could be so bad, it’s almost good. You know what I mean?” Amazon Prime Video broadcaster Al Michaels said at one point to partner Kirk Herbstreit.
The Denver fans booed their lackluster team, fueled by the disappointment that they were losing to a rival that seemed determined to lose.
The worst was yet to come.
Nick Rothchild and Troy Renck, broadcasters for the local Kmgh ABC outlet, apologized to viewers after the game for the Broncos terrible showing. The station was not even the host for the game.

When the Los Angeles Chargers faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs last night, fans got their clearest look yet at what the future of sports media might look like. The game was streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, as part of Amazon’s new deal with the NFL that has turned the tech giant into the exclusive home of “Thursday Night Football.”While last Thursday’s season opener between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills was broadcast on NBC, all subsequent Thursday matchups (except for the nationally televised Thanksgiving games) will be streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon has dabbled in NFL broadcasts in the past, but last night marked the first time that a major game was available exclusively on a streaming service. Some growing pains were inevitable, and few expected that it would be easy to get the NFL’s massive, demographic-spanning fan base prepared...

There will be lots of teams worth following this NFL season, be they the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the returning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Even so, many people in the media business have their eyes on a very distinctive player: Amazon Prime Video.
The streamer, which once shared “Thursday Night Football” games with Fox, now has exclusive rights to that action and must convince some pigskin Luddites to plug into broadband. Streaming “Thursday Night Football,” after all, will require a different kind of remote — and familiarity with a home screen, not a cable box.
“It is going to be a behavioral shift for people,” acknowledges Jay Marine, VP of Prime Video and its global head of sports. “Our job is to make sure they are able to find ‘Thursday Night Football’ at its new home and make it as easy as possible to get into the Prime Video app and start streaming.

The new team at NBC’s “Football Night in America” has yet to work a “Sunday Night Football” game in this year’s official NFL season, but they’ve already weathered at least one storm.
During NBC’s broadcast of the 2022 Hall of Fame Game last month, Jason Garrett, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach who is still relatively new to the art of TV sportscasting, got a bulletin in his ear courtesy of producer Matt Casey. “Looks like we have a rain delay,” Garrett recalls being told. “You guys are going to have to fill for half an hour.” Garrett, who has been working NBC’s Usfl broadcasts to warm up for his new stint on “Football Night,” took a moment to collect himself: “Oh, this is interesting.”
Everything that could have gone wrong with that telecast did, says Maria Taylor, who is taking over as the main host of the program this season.

This season, for the first time, a streaming service will have exclusive rights to an NFL football package, when Amazon launches Thursday Night Football on its Prime Video service.
But with streaming still not quite developed for commercial use, the tech giant and the satellite TV company DirecTV have struck a deal to bring its Thursday night broadcasts to bars, restaurants and other out-of-home venues this season.
The deal will kick off with this week’s final preseason game and will continue for all 15 regular season games. It will also include Amazon’s pregame, halftime and postgame coverage. DirecTV for Business will be the exclusive commercial distribution partner for Thursday Night Football, which will otherwise be available as part of Amazon’s Prime subscription.

Amazon’s Prime Video is one of the lions of the streaming business, with a shelf of awards, a multibillion-dollar advertising operation and reach to 80 million U.S. households to show for its efforts.
This Thursday, however, will mark perhaps the biggest milestone yet in Prime Video’s 15-year run, as it will deliver an exclusive stream of an NFL game for the first time. The contest between the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers is a preseason affair, so the stakes for the teams and fans are not exactly high. But a lot of eyes will be on the platform in its final public dress rehearsal before officially kicking off its Thursday Night Football broadcasts (the tech giant’s preferred term) on September 15. That regular-season matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs will be the first of 15 a year on Prime over the next 11 years. Amazon...

The NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” may be moving to Amazon, but it’s going to be measured as if it were still playing on traditional TV.
Nielsen and Amazon have struck a three-year deal to measure Prime Video’s new season of “Thursday Night Football” and stack it up against TV programs with national audiences tabulated by the media-measurement giant. The pact comes as many of the nation’s big media companies have vociferously expressed disapproval of Nielsen’s efforts in the streaming era and tried to prod advertisers to consider other forms of audience measurement.
Nielsen said the agreement marks the first time a streaming service will have one of its live programs measured as part of the company’s measurement of national TV audiences. Starting with the 2022 season, Nielsen will measure viewership for Amazon Prime Video’s full game broadcast, as well as pregame and postgame programming.

Nielsen and Amazon have reached a landmark deal for measuring the viewership of Thursday Night Football, which begins an unprecedented run next month as a streaming exclusive on Prime Video.
Beginning next month, pregame, in-game and postgame elements of the broadcast will count toward the rating, both on Prime Video and Twitch. Over-the-air local TV station carriage in both teams’ local markets — guaranteed under longtime NFL rules — and out-of-home viewing will also be added to the metric, enabling it to be a more robust (if not entirely apples-to-apples) figure to compare with Sunday and Monday NFL games.
The 3-year pact represents the first time a streaming service will be included in Nielsen’s national TV measurement service, and also a first for a live streaming program. The NFL broadcasting field is about to get a lot more crowded. And loud.
Following the success of ESPN’s Peyton and Eli Manning-led “Manningcast” and Paramount’s Nickelodeon-themed NFL playoff game (and its own experience developing alternate audio feeds for NFL games), Amazon is planning a major push into alternative broadcast streams for the upcoming season of Thursday Night Football.

Al Michaels, who in March exited NBC’s flagship Sunday Night Football booth after 16 seasons to join the new Thursday Night Football franchise at Amazon, isn’t exiting his former home completely.
NBC Sports said Tuesday that it has signed Michaels to an “emeritus role,” a deal that the network said will see him continue to broadcast and contribute across the sports division’s high-profile properties including the NFL playoffs and the Olympics. He is expected to call one postseason NFL game for NBC this upcoming season.
“Revered by viewers and colleagues, Al has been the soundtrack for many of the greatest moments in sports television history,” NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua said. “We are thrilled that he’s staying in the family and raising the stature of our events for years to come.”

In the annals of full-tilt ad pitches that have left buyers razzled and dazzled, Amazon’s NewFront presentation tonight may not merit an especially lengthy or detailed chapter.
Most of the announcements during the 90-minute event had been posted to Deadline and other outlets before the crowd of several hundred filed into David H. Koch Theater in New York’s Lincoln Center. The big draw for advertisers – weekly NFL games nabbed as an 11-year exclusive as part of the league’s sweeping media rights deals – has been known to the audience for more than a year.
And yet, as a demonstration of sheer force, the methodical tour through businesses like Prime Video’s sports push, livestream mainstay Twitch and the just-rebranded Freevee put Amazon even more fully on the media map. In streaming, the last few weeks have shown that any serious contender will need to have a well-developed ad business,...

Prime Video‘s exclusive hosting of Thursday Night Football will kick off (that’s a football term) Sept. 15 with Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers visiting their AFC West rivals, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sources tell me that the last meeting between the Chiefs and Chargers in 2021 was an “overtime thriller” in L.A., with Travis Kelce catching a 34-yard pass from Mahomes on his way to scoring the game-winning Td.
