Distribution platform Gathr and documentary distribution agency Roco Films have teamed to create Roco Voices, a new speakers bureau.
Roco Voices, launching Nov. 14, will offer live speaking engagements with filmmakers and subject matter experts from Roco Film’s docu film catalog. The initial cohort of filmmakers to debut with Roco Voices include Academy Award winners and nominees Oliver Stone (“Nuclear Now”), Ross Kauffman (“Born Into Brothels”), Justine Shapiro (“Promises”), Sam Green (“The Weather Underground”), David France (“How to Survive a Plague”), Geralyn Dreyfous (“The Square”), and Roger Weisberg (“Sound and Fury”). (All Roco clients have the opportunity to opt-in.)
Powering Roco Voices is Gathr’s talent booking technology. (The company started beta-testing earlier this year.) The collaboration is a one-stop shop for Roco Films’ customers to search, discover, negotiate, and book filmmakers, doc talent and subject matter experts while also licensing impact-driven and educational film screenings.

Carlos Alonso Ojea’s Killer Book Club doesn’t hide its intentions to remix Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s Scream — you’ll see both Scream and It referenced by name in the Netflix synopsis. The problem is, over two decades later, who hasn’t attempted to bottle that meta-slasher magic anew? Tyler MacIntyre’s Tragedy Girls and Scott Glosserman’s Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon thrive in a post-Scream world by creatively spinning meta-hilarious screenplays into uncharted territories, a lesson Killer Book Club doesn’t learn. Writer Carlos García Miranda does Scream but worse, foolishly begging for comparisons to a 90s horror classic because subverting expectations requires more labor versus copying someone else’s homework.
The story centers around aspiring best-selling author Ángela (Veki Velilla) and her misfit book club. They meet in an afterthought hangout den out of their school’s public eye, discussing serial killers and ghost stories.

A lot of fans have been anxiously waiting for more films set in the world of the 2006 meta slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here) ever since that movie was release. The follow-up Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon still hasn’t managed to make it into production – but David J. Stieve, who wrote Behind the Mask with Scott Glosserman (and also wrote the Before the Mask script years ago) has made a short film called Wait for It, which is said to be set in the world of Leslie Vernon. That short film is now making the festival rounds and has been screened at a handful of festivals so far, with more festival screenings coming up this fall.
Written and directed by Stieve, Wait for It is said to be a loving deconstruction of the slasher genre, seen from the perspective of survivor girl Darcy,...

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 2006 release that has built up a solid cult following, but still hasn’t drawn in as many fans as it deserves. The movie is Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Directed by Scott Glosserman from a screenplay he wrote with David J. Stieve, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has the following synopsis: You know legendary maniacs Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger. Now meet Leslie Vernon, the next great psycho-slasher. Vernon, a good-natured killing machine, invites a documentary film crew to follow him as he reminisces with his murder mentor, evades his psychiatrist/nemesis, deconstructs Freudian symbolism, and meticulously plots his upcoming slaughter spree.

The breakdown of the Writers Guild of America’s contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers could benefit the documentary industry. Especially those documentary filmmakers with projects seeking distribution.
At least that’s the hope.
Like film and television scribes worried about the survival of screenwriting as a viable profession, hundreds of nonfiction filmmakers with independently made docus are grappling with the streamers’ new distribution landscape, which, for the most part, no longer includes acquiring titles that aren’t commissioned.
If the writers strike lasts for several months, the thought is that not only broadcast networks but also streaming companies will begin to face holes in their narrative content, which could, in turn, lead to the purchase of indie docus to fill the void.

Cargo Film & Releasing has revealed the trailer for documentary “The Conservation Game,” directed and produced by Michael Webber (“The Elephant in the Living Room”) via his Nightfly Entertainment banner.
The film explores the largely unregulated U.S. trade in exotic animals, especially big cats like lions, tigers, and leopards and their connection to celebrity conservationists. It follows retired police officer and exotic animal expert Tim Harrison and fellow animal rights activists including attorney Carney Anne Nasser — who initiated the wildlife trafficking case against “Tiger King” Joe Exotic — and Carole and Howard Baskin (founders of Big Cat Rescue).
The film tracks Harrison as he stumbles upon a bombshell discovery while undercover at an exotic animal auction and starts an investigation to track down the whereabouts of rare and endangered big cats. As his investigation unfolds, Tim wrestles with the consequences of exposing the tightly held secrets of the exotic pet trade...

Happy Monday, everyone! Over the last few weeks of our Indie Horror Month celebration, we have had a pair of two-part video interviews from our Ihm: Revisited series queued up, but this week, we’re doing things a little differently, as we have a singular interview today featuring Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon’s co-writer and director Scott Glosserman. Then, we’ll be back on Wednesday and Friday for our next two-parter video featuring yet another beloved figurehead in independent horror.
During our discussion with Glosserman, he discussed how Behind the Mask initially came together and how he and co-writer David J. Stieve hoped to inject some life into the dormant slasher scene in the mid-2000s. Glosserman also chatted about how integral film veterans like Zelda Rubenstein and Angela Goethals as well as horror legend Robert Englund all were to the production of the film, and...

Hello, everyone! Throughout the month of April, I’m going to be offering up some streaming suggestions in support of our ongoing Indie Horror Month celebration, and today, we’re celebrating 13 different films that are currently streaming on Shudder. For this list, I tried to offer up some titles that have either been on the platform for a while now, so maybe they’ve gotten lost in the mix (since Shudder regularly updates their service with so much killer content), or they’ve generally just flown under the radar of most fans. So, while I absolutely adore movies like Host or Mandy, I felt like horror fans in general are already tuned in to those masterpieces, and I wanted to give a few other films a shot at glory here as well.
Check out this great array of films and be sure to check back here on Daily Dead every...

I don’t always have a reason to go back to older movies for review, but having just recently revisited this movie, I had to talk about it. Why? Well, because it’s phenomenal, but also because… well… not many people actually talk about it, and that’s a shame.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a 2006 film from director Scott Glosserman, and takes a different approach to the tried and tested and well trodden slasher genre. I recall seeing this flick back when it came out, and I loved it. Some 14 years later I was curious if it held up, and was over the moon that it did. It really did. The story follows a young documentary crew who follow Leslie Vernon,...

Is your check in the mail, pal? You better hope so, because Fright-Rags' new apparel collections celebrate two movies that genre fans will want to add to their wardrobes: John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China and Scott Glosserman's Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
Press Release: A film doesn't need to be a box office hit to have an enduring legacy, as evidenced by genre favorites like Big Trouble in Little China and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Fright-Rags has released new apparel from the pair of cult classics.
Ol' Jack Burton says to get to Fright-Rags for the Big Trouble in Little China collection, which features four new tees from the John Carpenter film, a replica of Kurt Russell's wardrobe tank top, and four enamel pins, including Lo Pan with light-up eyes.

Having only just gotten into collecting Blu-rays within the last couple of years, I’ve become interested in the different ways some of these releases catch our attention as horror fans. Sometimes we get those movies that we’ve always loved and jump on immediately. Other times, we get the obscure films that might wind up being a hidden gem. And then there are those releases that remind us to revisit the movies we haven’t seen in years. Such was the case for me and the 2006 meta-slasher Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. I remember seeing the movie within a year or so of its release, enjoying it, but never really feeling the need for a rewatch until Scream Factory announced their Collector’s Edition.

If you let Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon somehow slip by you back when it released in 2006, then you made a big mistake. Scott Glosserman’s slasher-gem is simply one of the most genius re-incarnations of horror explanation in the past few decades, attacking conventional slasher horror norms through documentary-type exploits that give you an unprecedented look into the killer’s life – the planning, the preparation, the execution, it’s all here.
Even the smallest details are picked up and satirically dealt with, presenting dark entertainment that viewers gobbled up with glee 12 years ago. Not to mention the bloody brilliant third act that came after the jabs had been thrown and the background work established. Hell, I couldn’t get the Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer out of my head for weeks thanks to Glosserman’s film.

Shining a satirical ray of light on the horror genre is nothing new, as a number of films (both indie and mainstream) have done this for a few decades now, but only one (that I know of), Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, states that in its own cinematic world, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger actually existed. Don't believe me? Check out some Blu-ray clips from Scream Factory's Collector's Edition of Scott Glosserman's cult movie before it hits shelves on March 27th.

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Described as a "spreemake," meaning a sequel, prequel...

Horror as a genre is full of easy targets, which makes it probably the most lampooned genre there is. You have your Scary Movies and A Haunted Houses which spoof all of the recent successes in the genre as well as everything else but then you also have films that parody, honour and do something fresh with the genre.
Considering how common and repetitive the tropes of the genre are, it’s surprising that films such as Scream and The Cabin in the Woods don’t occur more often. There are sixteen years between these two films and in between these successes in revitalising the genre in a clever and self-reflective way, we have just gotten more and more slasher and haunted house flicks that simply just imitate them but on a purely surface level. Look at all the un-ironic stalk and slash films that came out in the wake...

In celebration of Earth Day, environmental documentary "Bidder 70" will be shown in theaters across the country on April 22. Documenting activist Tim DeChristopher's trial and conviction for disrupting a federal oil and gas lease auction in Utah, the film will screen one day after his release from federal prison.
As HuffPost previously reported, the 31-year-old received a two-year prison sentence in 2011 for bidding on, and winning, millions of dollars worth of land parcels under false pretenses at a Bureau of Land Management auction in 2008.
DeChristopher's case also drew attention from environmentalists, including many who saw him as acting in the name of conservation and climate action. He was "acting on behalf of every landscape left on the planet," argued author Bill McKibben.
The film, which is being distributed by Gathr Films, will be released in a crowd-funded "theatrical-on-demand" format. Individuals must order a ticket in advance, but they will only...

With guys like Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface dominating the cinematic slaughter scene (the new Texas Chainsaw killed the competition this weekend), it’s easy for horror fans to forget about the little people. But, we at FEARnet embrace the little people and think that they deserve their moment in the spotlight just as much as the big guns. So, we have put together a list of underrated psychopaths in horror cinema who we would like to thank for their thoughtful contributions to the horror genre.
The Dentist
Corbin Bernsen does crazy quite well. His performance as a psychotic dentist who wants to rid the world of filth is what makes The Dentist as enjoyable as it is. The film itself is just Ok, but Bernsen's performance is great. Watch out for Mark Ruffalo in one of his first feature film roles. The Dentist 2 goes a little off the rails.

There's little doubt that Behind the Mask's lovable lunatic Leslie Vernon has captured (and in most cases torn out) the hearts of many horror fans over the world. Now, thanks to DeConte Figures & Collectibles, you can take him with you everywhere!
This Rhode Island based toy company has its first line of licensed product out based on the character from the 2006 movie Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.
Check out images of the 7” action figure of the slasher “Leslie,” played by Nathan Baesel, below. There are also limited edition versions available, limited to 100 and signed by director Scott Glosserman, actor Nathan Baesel and sculptor Neal DeConte.
Even cooler? There will also be limited edition reproductions of the mask and scythe props from the movie available to purchase.

Editor's Note: A few months ago, Gathr founder Scott Glosserman laid out the case for Theatrical On Demand℠ platforms in his piece 'Gathr is the Love Child of Netflix and Kickstarter.' As a follow-up, we thought it would be helpful to present a case study from a filmmaker who has used the service to generate theatrical audiences for his film. This week, Kurt Kuenne walks us through his experience. Every filmmaker wants his or her movie to play in theatres. Seeing a great movie on the big screen is what made most of us want to make movies in the first place. But I learned a surprising lesson on my last film, a low-budget documentary called Dear Zachary: a letter to a son about his father. The film was released in theatres and on home video by the wonderful Oscilloscope Laboratories, founded by David Fenkel and the late, great Adam Yauch.

Hot off a streak of festival screenings (including Fantastic Fest) that culminated in the winning of Lionsgate and Vimeo's Cabin In The Woods short film competition, Chris Cullari's satirical stab at the residential routines of movie serial killer communities, The Sleepover, is now available online in all its bloody and funny glory.Conceived as a proof-of-concept for a feature, the five-minute short economically establishes a set of fun ideas that betray a larger scope. I'm particularly reminded of some of the ideas Scott Glosserman ruminated on in Q&As for his terrific Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon, when considering where he would take a sequel (I recall his vision at the time was of a '21 Jump Street for Final Girls"), so I'm pretty excited...

Editor's note: Two weeks ago, we published our first in a series of pieces on crowd-sourcing platforms that are helping filmmakers get their work into theaters without a traditional wide release. Today, Scott Glosserman shares some background on his motivation for developing the new platform Gathr. By clearly laying out the benefits for all parties - filmmakers/content owners, theaters, and audiences - Glosserman makes the case that services like his can successfully broaden the reach of independent film. Gathr is a new web-based service that enables people to request their own theatrical screenings of a movie that otherwise would not be available to play at a theater near them. We are also a film distribution company that facilitates the local marketing of these screenings, the booking of the theaters, and the technical delivery. We're the would-be love child result of a super-sweet night on the town between Kickstarter and Netflix.

You may have noticed Kane Hodder pop up in an uber-brief cameo duringn Scott Glosserman’s beloved slasher, Behind the Mask: The rise of Leslie Vernon. Well, he’ll be back for the sequel, but this time you won’t be forced to keep your eyes peeled in order to spot him. According to Kane himself, he’ll play a much more relevant role in the upcoming “Sprequel”.

Director Scott Glosserman wrote in to the Dread Central offices with an exclusive update on his next project, the long talked about Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon. Read on for the latest on this highly anticipated sequel.
Scott told us, "Kane Hodder is joining us for B4TM. He's officially attached, and we have a quote from him:"
"I was happy to be a part of the first film. Had no idea what, exactly, I was getting myself into. But Robert (Englund) asked me to do a favor and show up in front of the Elm Street house for a cameo, so I did it. In retrospect, I'm so happy to have been a part of such an intelligent, clever Valentine to horror fans. I've been shouting the praises of Scott's movie for several years now, and I'm excited to be offered a more substantial role in the next one.

It’s something we have been working on for sometime now and I’m happy to announce that Destroy the Brain will be hosting a one night only screening of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. This film is one of the most underrated gems of the 2000-2010 decade. Its deconstruction of the slasher genre while still entertaining the audience is one of the most perfect blends I have seen in years. Before there was The Cabin in the Woods, there was Behind the Mask.

There's no doubt about it; every time a crappy movie gets a theatrical release while a good movie gets the shaft, it's really irritating. Thankfully the cats over at Gathr are here to help You do something about it, starting right now with Darren Lynn Bousman's take on Mother's Day.

“Tipping.” “Pulling.” “Gathring.” Yes, a new tech start-up has entered the independent film space, and with it a nomenclature that speaks to its ambition to “democratize” the business of theatrical distribution. Launched by a filmmaker, Scott Glosserman (Behind the Mask), Gathr offers “Tod,” or theatrical-on-demand, an audience-driven process by which fans request (or “pull”) films to local venues by aggregating their interest and pledging their funds in advance via credit card. When enough fans support a screening on a particular day, the film “tips,” and credit cards are charged. Fans get to see films that might never come to their towns, and theaters get a guaranteed audience for a low-traffic night.
Positioning itself both as a resource for Diy filmmakers and a sub-distributor for established players in the theatrical space, Gathr launched this week with titles ranging from indies (Behind the Mask, Truth in Numbers) to repertory (Alien, Blazing Saddles...

It’s almost hard to believe that Behind The Mask was released 6 years ago. Since then, director/writer Scott Glosserman has been working on getting Before The Mask off the ground. They’ve had a number of ways fans could support funding efforts in the past, but but now we have news on two interesting items for those that love the first film and want to see a new movie made.
The big news item is that Behind The Mask will be making a limited theatrical return. The catch is that enough people need to request it in your area with a new Theatrical on Demand service:
From Scott Glosserman: “I was so bummed out about our theatrical run, 6 years ago, because I knew there were people who wanted to see the movie, but it wasn’t playing anywhere near them. For B4TM I created a distribution mechanism that changes all that.

In 2006 Scott Glosserman turned the slasher genre sideways with his mockumentary Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which depicted all the slashers from the 70's and 80's as not only real but just regular guys like you and me, struggling to work and get by in the world.
The titular character, brought to life brilliantly by Nathan Baesel, won over fans and audiences throughout its festival run and subsequent home release courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment and managed to breathe new life into the long stagnant slasher subgenre as well.
Five years after Behind the Mask, co-writer and director Glosserman and his cast were on hand for Los Angeles' Weekend of Horrors 2011 and officially announced their plans for the long-awaited sequel and said that for the second installment the filmmakers would be reaching out to the very community that made Leslie Vernon into one of the very few...
