Four individuals and one writing team have been selected as winners of the 2016 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. The Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee announced the winners via Livestream today. The fellows will each receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation & Live Read on Thursday, November 3, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. For the fourth consecutive year, an ensemble of actors will be reading selected scenes from the winning scripts.

From all-American WWII war hero to domestic terrorist to hero U.S. astronaut/savior of the human race? Hey, if anyone can do it, it’s Major Dick Winters. Or Sergeant Nicolas Brody. Turns out, it’s the same guy! “Band of Brothers” star Damian Lewis is set to take the lead in the new sci-fi thriller “Alone” for co-writers/directors Kirk Weddell and Chris Taylor. Among this week’s new additions to Screenbase are comedy-drama Pride starring Bill Nighy and astronaut thriller Alone with Damian Lewis.
Pride is set in the summer of 1984, when Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners. But the Union seems embarrassed to receive their support.
Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton will star in this Proud Films production, which also features Paddy Considine, Dominic West, George MacKay and Ben Schnetzer. Matthew Warchus directs from a script by Stephen Beresford, which is based on true events. Additional finance comes from BBC Films, Pathé International and the BFI, with Pathé also handling worldwide rights and releasing in France and the UK.

The high-concept story is about a Us astronaut who has to save the planet when he is the sole occupant of an orbiting space station.
The project will shoot in London. Kirk Weddell wrote the script and will co-direct with Chris Taylor, a VFX veteran who has worked on films including The Dark Knight Rises and Les Miserables.
Weddell and Mark Shields will produce for London-based Atlantic Picture Company. Gareth Jones (Lock Stock, Secretary) will serve as executive producer.
