This meditative documentary about Richter’s eight-hour composition for a sleeping audience is anything but a snooze
Max Richter is the genre-defying composer who works for movies, TV, theatre and the concert hall. This documentary by Natalie Johns is about what many consider his magnum opus: Sleep, from 2015 – an eight-and-a-half-hour composition with 204 movements in a plangent, ambient and mellow vein, featuring strings, synthesisers and a soprano, designed to be listened to while you are asleep.
Richter has staged many spectacular overnight performances in venues where audiences are provided with camp-beds, and this film focuses on an open-air event in the Grand Park in Los Angeles. Audiences were invited to fall asleep, stay awake, tune in, tune out, and – presumably – traipse back and forth to the loos at 4am.

“I Am Thalente,” the La Film Fest documentary Audience Award co-winner, tells the inspiring story of aspiring skater Thalente Biyela. Growing up as one of Durban, South Africa’s numerous street kids (he was on the streets by 11 due to a bad home environment), Thalente found solace and motivation in the skate park. Discovered by Tony Hawk and other pro skaters, Thalente’s sweet nature and prodigious talent inspired those around him to try and help lift him up out of his situation. Natalie Johns’ film follows Thalente’s journey as he tries to make it as a pro skater in America, mentored by big time skaters such as Hawk, Kenny Anderson, and others. Johns is more than just a documentarian, but a friend and support system for Thalente, moving him into her home, getting him a tutor, and connecting him with people who can teach him the ropes of the industry,...

So he kick push kick push kick push kick push/ coast And away he rolled jus’ a rebel to the world with no place to go -Lupe Fiasco ("Kick, Push") There’s a scene in Natalie Johns' documentary, “I am Thalente,” where South African skater Thalente (which means “Talent” in Zulu), skateboards through a large, empty swimming pool in Los Angeles. He dips and glides through the empty pool, almost as if he’s flying. It’s a magical scene, both in his movements and in the way that it’ shot- fluid and smooth. The film comes alive in these moments. In essence, we watch Thalente’s ascent, metaphorically and physically. The idea of flight is set up early in the documentary...

There's a critical junction for a teenager when they must start deciding which path they want to follow for their future. Do they give up on their artistic dreams and settle on something perhaps more academic and career oriented, or do they pursue their passion? It's that question that skateboarder Thalente Biyela seems to face in this exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary "I Am Thalente." Directed by Natalie Johns, the film follows the seventeen year-old South African skateboarding prodigy who sees a world of opportunity arrive after video showing off his skills goes viral. Skate world figures like Kenny Anderson and Tony Hawk soon lend support to Thalente, providing him an opportunity to chase his dream of skating and competing in the U.S. And as you'll see in this scene, Thalente is rather humble in his observations about what lies ahead. British crooner Essie Jain and Lower East Side composer Nico Muhly recently collaborated on a new project, combining the ethereal voice of Ms. Jain with the classical contemporary arrangements of Mr. Muhly in a soon-to-be-released "film record."
What is a "film record," you ask?
It's a documentary of sorts, capturing the rehearsals, performances and recording sessions associated with Jain's upcoming release, "All Became Golden." Directed by Natalie Johns, the work is a visual and lyrical exploration of Jain's re-entrance into the music world after disappearing for the past two years.
"I guess I heard 'no' too many times. If I did put my hands to the keys it just seemed this impossible, overwhelming task," she explains in a trailer for the "All Became Golden" film. "I knew if I played music again it would have to be something spectacular."
Working with Muhly certainly qualifies as something spectacular. The grown-up prodigy...
