Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: I just can’t get past that a superb Super Bowl shaping up as one for the ages fell off the cliff so abruptly. Seahawks down by four, little over a minute left, both teams with timeouts. A miracle catch by Seattle by Jermaine Kearse who’d fallen on the ground. Seattle hands to the best goal line back in football, and Marshawn Lynch gets to the half yard line. I’m already thinking he scores on the next run, Seattle kicks off and Tom Brady, now down by three, has to race the Patriots up 40 yard for the game tying kick and overtime. No! Instead Seahawks coach Pete Carroll okays Russell Wilson to pass into the teeth of the Patriot defense.

Tony Dungy, a former NFL player and coach and current analyst for NBC Sports, would not have drafted openly gay player Michael Sam were he still coaching an NFL franchise.
Tony Dungy Wouldn't Have Taken Michael Sam
Dungy, who made history becoming the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl when he led that Indianapolis Colts to victory in Super Bowl Xli, “wouldn’t want to deal” with the potential repercussion of having an openly gay player in his locker-room.
"[It’s] not because I don't believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play,” Dungy told the Tampa Tribune, “but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it.”
Dungy added that Sam’s inclusion into the league will be hard-going. “It’s not going to be totally smooth,” he said. “Things will happen.’’
In addition to people finding it hard to believe that Dungy seems to miss...

Michael Sam is responding to Tony Dungy's comments -- by not responding -- with Sam's rep telling TMZ Sports he refuses to engage with the legendary coach ... and wants to keep his focus on football. It's not the first time Sam has had to deal with a former NFL coach claiming his sexual orientation would be a distraction -- earlier this year, Herm Edwards said Sam has "issues" and coaches would have to decide...

In addition to Being Mary Jane and starring in films like Think Like A Man Too (out Friday), Gabrielle Union somehow finds time to show up to NBA games on the regular. It helps that she’s engaged to Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, but our girl has always been athletic. Back in 2007 she was interested in dating dudes in the sports world, but not necessarily the one who eventually put a ring on it (sorry, D!).
In this vintage interview, VH1 caught up with Ms. Union on the carpet for Black Girls Rock in 2007. Considering she’s beautiful and talented, she could likely snag any available man she wants. So who was her big crush back in the day? Herman Edwards, former coach of the Kansas City Chiefs…

Ahem, that’s former Philadelphia Eagles star and current Espn football analyst Herman Edwards. But isn’t he a little old for her?...

The Dallas Cowboys' Dez Bryant caused a rumbling in the sports world by refusing to concede the Detroit Lions' Calvin "Megatron" Johnson is a better receiver, ahead of the pair's meeting Sunday (Oct. 27) at Ford Field.
"I believe I can do whatever he can do," Bryant tells Espn Radio in Dallas. "I think it's just a pride thing. When it comes to football, just being on the field, it's a mindset and having a mentality. I honestly believe when I'm there, I'll be feeling like there's nothing I can't do. Whatever the coaches ask me to do, I'm going to do it."
Well, it's a good thing Dez is listening to the Cowboys' coaches and not the team's owner and general manager, Jerry Jones.
Jones has no qualms about handing the best in the league title to Megatron.

Everyone knows who the quarterback is. And rightly so. He's the leader of the offense, often the face of the franchise and the one the media tend to focus on (unless, of course, he's Aaron Hernandez or any of the slew of NFL players who ran into trouble with the law this offseason).
The breed of field general that frequents NFL playing fields these days throws for big yardage (11 topped 4,000 yards a year ago,) high completion rates (15 with more than 300 attempts connected on 60 percent or better of their passes in 2012) and a lot of touchdowns (five averaged two or more Td passes per game). And some, such as Robert Griffin III or Cam Newton, can run it, no matter the risk to their well-compensated bodies.
As ex-New York Giants quarterback and current CBS analyst Phil Simms tells Zap2it, "This is the steroid era for quarterbacks; the numbers are ridiculous.

On Oct. 30, 2002, then-New York Jets head coach Herm Edwards came to a press conference three days after watching his team lose at home to the the Cleveland Browns by blowing a 15-point, second-half lead to fall into last place in the Afc East. What ensued became one of the most memorable coach press conferences of all time. New York Times reporter Judy Battista asked Coach Edwards if he needed to talk to his team about not giving up on the season. His answer was the now-legendary, “You play to win the game! Hello?!?” This line still resonates, is [...]...

CBS did the right thing with this week’s episode of Survivor by basically merging two episodes in to one. As the ex-Ometepes simply pick off the ex-Zapateras with their numbers advantage – old Survivor style – there’s not much to watch.
Rather than waste our time with sorry attempts at cliff hanger votes through creative editing, the Survivor producers hit fast forward on the season and got rid of two of the Zapateras this week.
With three people left to vote out before the ex-Ometepes are left with their six, perhaps we’ll see the same thing next week. However, there’s the potential flaw in doing so. If only one Zapatera is voted out next week, do we know that there will be fireworks the following week?
