For fans of classic Star Trek who want to see quality stories done in the spirt of the original series, you have a treat this week. The consistently excellent web series Star Trek Continues has put out its eighth episode, “Still Treads the Shadow”, and as usual, it does not disappoint.
For those who’ve never seen the multi-award winning Star Trek Continues, don’t dismiss it as “just” a fan-made web show. That does the series an injustice. It’s more than that. As someone whose been a Star Trek fan for over 40 years, and grew up with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the original crew of the USS Enterprise, I never ceased to be amazed by how well this show captures the essence of the great show I adored in my childhood. It’s a terrific homage, made by people who love the original Star Trek.

For all you gentlemen who just watched Black Sails Season 4 Episode 6 in real time with your strong, independent wives, how long did it take for her to tell you: "You see that? That's what he gets for not listening to his wife."
Gov. Woodes Rogers missed that memo — but it's not too late for you, gentlemen.
All Rogers had to do was listen to his better half, Eleanor Guthrie and right now he'd be laying back in Port Royal, sipping a piña colada, under British protection, away from the war with the pirates and waiting for her to show up with a ton of loot.
But no. Instead, the Spanish navy and its ornery sailors — which he invited into Nassau to burn down and rape and pillage as they pleased — killed Eleanor at a supposed safe house.

Jury selection is underway for the murder trial of former South Carolina cop Michael Slager, who shot and killed unarmed motorist Walter Scott during a traffic stop in early April 2015 in what prosecutors have alleged is murder, People confirms.
On Monday, potential jurors began being interviewed in a Charleston, South Carolina, court room as Slager’s attorneys recently sought either a dismissal of the entire case or an alternate venue for the 34-year-old’s impending trial, a court official tells People.
He has pleaded not guilty and faces 30 years to life without parole if convicted. Jury selection will take at least two days,...

The multiplex has been all about a certain science-fiction feature film franchise of late. I’m speaking of all the hoopla last December with the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (and it’s started up again for the stand alone flick Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). And the year before that, 2014, the big buzz was about the new planet-hoppin’ series from Marvel Studios, Guardians Of The Galaxy (a sequel touches down next May). Somehow, the grand-daddy (or maybe the older uncle) has been neglected. Star Trek has been drifting in the cinema cosmos for over three years. In 2009 Paramount Studios recruited J.J. Abrams to reboot the films with younger versions of the characters from the original TV show (and first seven features). Four years later they were back, with Abrams directing once more, for Star Trek: Into Darkness. Soon after its release, he was whisked into that galaxy far,...

The Directors Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 68th annual DGA Awards! Missing were Todd Haynes ("Carol") and Steven Spielberg for "Bridge of Spies." But I'm very happy that George Miller for "Mad Max: Fury Road" got in. While we're in the subject of sequel, apparently, the DGA felt that J.J. Abrams is not worthy...yet...for a nod!
But this year's awards offer a bunch of newbies like Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), and Miller. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott has been nominated three times before but never won for "Thelma and Louise" in 1991, "Gladiator" in 2000, and "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. Let's see if "The Martian" will do the trick and get Ridley his DGA! By the way, he hasn't won an Oscar either and he was nominated for those movies too!
Winners will be announced on Feb. 6th. Here's your complete list of nominees...

Fresh off its impressive haul at the Golden Globes the weekend, "The Revenant" is poised to nab yet another statuette with a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award.
The DGA announced its annual slate of honorees for outstanding directorial achievement on Tuesday, and "Revenant" director Alejandro G. Inarritu was among the five nominees. Inarritu also won the DGA award last year, for 2014's "Birdman," and with the new momentum from "The Revenant"'s Globes wins, the director looks like an early favorite to repeat.
The rest of the nominees were rounded out by Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), George Miller ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), and Ridley Scott ("The Martian"). In addition to those names, the DGA also included a new category this year, honoring directors who helmed their first feature films in 2015.

The Star Trek franchise will be 50 years old this September. It’s one of the most popular and enduring of all TV and film franchises, still going strong nearly 50 years after its debut in 1966. A third film of the rebooted series is in the works. Cinelinx looks at the ever-popular sci-fi property as it warps into its 50th year.
Star Trek, a show that didn’t do very well in the ratings when it first debuted, has become a multi-media monster. It has gone from television to cartoons, novels, comic books, video games and films. Many of the character names have become an iconic part of pop-culture. The real-life space shuttle Enterprise was named in honor of the space vessel from Star Trek. The whole concept of the sci-fi convention was begun by the fan-created ‘Trek’ conventions of the early seventies. Few franchises can claim to have had the impact...

Continuing his 2015 resurgence, Ridley Scott is of course going to be feted at the 19th annual Hollywood Film Awards with the Hollywood Producer Award. Scott is not just in the running for a Best Director nod for The Martian this year, he’s also potentially in line for a producing nom if the movie does score a Best Picture citation. In giving this honor to Scott, the Hollywood Film Awards are of course citing how essential his presence is in making The Martian the success that it is, beyond just his direction. Considering that his film is among the best of the year so far, you have to applaud this selection, in particular when considering how he’s such a big part of it actually being an Academy Award player. Scott will have to wait and see how the Oscars take to his contender, but this is a good start...

Rushes collects news, articles, images, videos and more for a weekly roundup of essential items from the world of film. The news that has resounded with us above and beyond all others is the tragic death of Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman, truly one of the great artists of our era. We cannot encapsulate how much we'll miss her and her work.Above: John Byrne's "Portrait of Tilda" (1990), in honor of......The trailer for the Tilda Swinton-starring A Big Splash, director Luca Guadagnino's follow-up to I Am Love."Progress renders all technologies obsolete, but no medium is anachronistic to an artist. The intentional mischaracterization of film as merely technology has been extremely damaging, as it belies the truth about a medium’s many artistic differences and puts those invested in film in the unsympathetic position of being on the wrong side of progress and castigated as Luddites. When Star Trek cast member Simon Pegg, alongside Doug Jung, was tasked with writing duties for the rebooted film franchise.s third entry, it undoubtedly represented the most encompassing, pressure-filled task of his screenwriting career. In fact, the experience apparently left the current Mr. Scott looking to abandon his literary engine room on a number of occasions. In an interview with Australia.s Sydney Morning Herald, Pegg, an accomplished screenwriter of beloved quirky, genre-bending comedies, discusses how he had to be talked off the proverbial ledge from his current task, titled Star Trek Beyond. Fortunately, the man who initially oversaw the Star Trek reboot effort, J.J. Abrams, was always there to put him back in place. As Pegg explains: I quit like three times, I think. Every time, J. J. Abrams said, 'Oh come on, Simon ...' In the recent months since his scriptwriting duties for Beyond were revealed, ...

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.

Over the years, Marvel has done a ton of crossover comics, one of the most recent was The Avengers and Attack on Titan. It was short, but it was really freakin' cool. Affter doing a little research I came across six Marvel crossover comics that were ridiculous. The comic book publisher sure has some doozies over the years. Most of them offer some good, fun entertainment, while others simply sucked. Check out the list below:

I was going to just leave this alone but then Rupert Murdoch stepped in with something characteristically outrageous and now I just can't help myself. If you've been paying attention, you know there's been a bit of a kerfuffle around Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods and Kings." Ever since Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton were cast as Moses and Ramses respectively, outrage has circulated that white actors were tapped to play Egyptians. Furthering the unrest are complaints that minority actors have been mostly relegated to background roles as slaves and thieves. It's a debate as old as the medium, really — particularly as it pertains to Biblical epics — but in the digital age, foot-in-mouth disease runs rampant. Enter Mr. Scott. "I can't mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such," the director...

He scored a successful opening at the Us box office this past weekend with revenge thriller John Wick, which he had a hand in producing too, and Keanu Reeves has helped develop another potential starring role, setting up sci-fi thriller Replicas. He’ll star as a top neuroscientist whose world is shattered when his wife and family are killed in a car accident. He becomes obsessed with bringing them back to life, even if it means going up against a government-controlled lab, a police task force and – though Star Trek’s Mr. Scott would surely have a fit at the idea – the laws of physics and nature themselves.Hysteria director Tanya Wexler is aboard to call the shots, working from a script by Chad St. John. He, in turn, took the story from a treatment by producer Stephen Hamel, who worked with Reeves and Lorenzo di Bonaventura to develop the idea.

Just a bunch of random thoughts this week, gang…
As I mentioned two weeks ago, Martha Thomases and I go waaaay back to the days when she was DC’s go-to woman for marketing and promotions and I was a naive, newbie freelance writer for the company who always stuck my head in her doorway (“hey, Martha”) whenever I was in the office. We have always been kindred spirits in political thought and our taste in literature, television, and moves have always coincided more than they have diverged, and now Martha’s latest column extends that coincidence to some critics.
Martha, you have more patience than I do; I couldn’t even finish the piece because I got so annoyed. So, yeah, I’m not an A.O. Scott fan, either, although I do think he writes beautifully. In my not-so-humble opinion, Mr. Scott is a bit of a snob and...

She’s an endless source of creativity, and Miley Cyrus submitted a few sculptures to be used in Jeremy Scott’s Made Fashion Show at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday (September 10).
The “Party in the USA” singer supplied a 5-foot bong, a vibrator, and several other stuffed animal-themed pieces for the presentation, and even walked the runway with Mr. Scott himself.
Of her “Dirty Hippie” art, Miley told V magazine, "Jeremy brought a lot of peace and self-worth to me because even though to some people, it was just me gluing some things together, to me, it made me not a f*cking pop star dumbass.”
“And that's my goal in my life: to not die a pop pop dumb dumb. I can't. I will freak out. I just wanted to give myself something I can work at, and even now, if I had more time and I wasn't on tour,...

Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings opens this December, and the casting for the film has been controversial to say the least. Although Ancient Egypt was a racially diverse society, the lead cast — Christian Bale as Moses, Joel Edgerton as Ramses, Sigourney Weaver as Tuya, and Aaron Paul as Joshua — is as white as it gets. That's unfortunately standard for a Hollywood movie, but things took a turn when the above photo hit the Internet. As you might have noticed, the important people are white, the slaves and servants are black. People had a problem with that, especially when they found that black and non-white actors were mostly credited with roles like "Egyptian Thief" and "Egyptian Lower Class Civilian." Yikes. Scott recently spoke to Yahoo Australia, and this is what he said about casting the film.

Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings has been receiving quite a bit of criticism recently, and not just because it’s a terrible title for a film. A number of bloggers and tweeters have remarked upon the rather odd casting choices behind almost all the main characters. Those ancient Egyptians seem to be awfully…white.
The controversy comes down to a uniformly white cast in the front lines of Exodus: Gods and Kings, while black actors were cast (again, almost uniformly) as slaves or servants. Ridley Scott does not see much of a problem with the casting, though, as he told Australian Yahoo (via The Film Stage):
Egypt was – as it is now – a confluence of cultures, as a result of being a crossroads geographically between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. We cast major actors from different ethnicities to reflect this diversity of culture, from Iranians to Spaniards to Arabs.

We appear to be in a new period of sword and sandal epics. There have been a recent spate of films featuring Hercules, the ill-conceived Pompeii, the slightly better conceived 300: Rise of an Empire, and of course, Aronofsky’s Noah. Soon entering the fray will be Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, in which Mr. Scott goes boldly where Cecil B. DeMille has gone before.
20th Century Fox recently released a new batch of images from the film in anticipation of the first trailer (which is coming with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes next week), and they feature stars Christian Bale, Joel Edgerton and Sigourney Weaver.

And when Tylor and Naomi were pinched by Johnny Law, the arresting officers found the handgun on their person and determined it to be stolen.
Thankfully, all of Miley’s purses, clothes, jewelry and her car have all been recovered and Mr. Scott and Ms. Charles are in the clink.
