Writer/director Zach Cregger’s horror film Barbarian (watch it Here) was a financial success when it was released last year, and it also received a lot of positive word-of-mouth. New Line Cinema was so impressed by it, they forked over $38 million to pick up Cregger’s mysterious new horror project, Weapons. (Beating out Jordan Peele and Universal in the bidding war.) New Line then signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian. They have since set up two other projects, a sci-fi thriller called Companion and a haunted house movie called Occupant, that Cregger will be producing. But while the filmmakers move on to other ideas, Barbarian does still has life in it. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that a Barbarian video game is now in the works!

In The Vampire Diaries, Alaric Saltzman was initially a mysterious figure who came to Mystic Falls and eventually moved in with Elena and Jeremy Gilbert. The Vampire Diaries was about vampires and teenagers, right? Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) vied for the affections of Elena (Nina Dobrev), and it got complicated. But, to co-creator Kevin Williamson, The Vampire Diaries was about something more. Set in the fictional Mystic Falls, Va, to Williamson the show was a small town story.

Williamson was on a Television Critics Association panel for The Vampire Diaries in 2009. He described his focus on Mystic Falls as the show began its eventual eight season run.
Mystic Falls was the heart of ‘The Vampire Diaries’
It’s a cliche to say the location is another character in a show or film. Anything that shoots in New York says that about the city. But, Williamson made a strong case for Mystic Falls being the central focus of The Vampire Diaries.

There's always a villain in a horror film. They supply story conflict, forcing our protagonists to face their own death and rise victorious. Sometimes, villains are cloaked in everyday life as your next-door neighbor, a 9-year-old child, or the family pet. Other times, villains assume the shape of supernatural entities, malevolent forces, or otherworldly beings transported from a different dimension. For every masked serial killer, a vampire ventures out for blood and a ghost causes mayhem in someone's attic.
In 2022, several villains stole the show in otherwise lackluster films and still others stood head and shoulders above their competition. But who are the most powerful villains of the bunch? Below, /Film sifts through the wealth of last year's film releases to rank the eight most powerful baddies, those beings that can rip heads from their victims' bodies and crush bones into dust. Warning: This post contains spoilers for the horror movies on this list.
2022 was nothing short of a banner year for horror. Way more films were met with critical praise and box office success, from Jordan Peele's third studio feature "Nope" to "Smile" and "Terrifier 2." Yes, there were several protagonists to root for, but a horror movie would be nothing without a deliciously disturbing villain. In 2022, villains ranged from the supernatural (Pinhead from "Hellraiser") to the definitely human (Steve from "Fresh") and everything in between. There was no shortage of evildoers that wreaked absolute havoc and left a trail of bodies in their wake.
Below, we take a look at some of the year's less-than-stellar releases where villains stole the show. To qualify for this list, the films themselves either lean into polarizing territory or had debatable in their quality. But these villains were the glue that held their respective films together.

Where there’s horror, there’s death, and 2022 has been a tremendous year for horror. The genre is thriving, as evidenced by the robust offerings of surprise sequels, massive franchise returns, and original stories on every level, indie and otherwise. That means a slew of ingenious and highly creative onscreen kills that made us groan, cringe, cheer, and even cry.
We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2022 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead.

Filmmaking’s over-reliance on green screens and de-aging these days makes it easy to feel that “pure” craftsmanship is increasingly rare in Hollywood. Makeup and prosthetics are among the final vestiges of the pre-digital era, reminders that movies are ultimately born of collaborations between people, not just computers. However, prosthetics are more than production mementos to be displayed in museums. They also bridge past and present, combining cutting-edge digital modeling and 3D printing with traditional techniques. The following stellar examples of cosmetic appliances harken back to old-school stagecraft as much as they demonstrate the capacity of modern technology to transform well-known faces into ones we can barely recognize.
Christian Bale (“Thor: Love and Thunder”)
Christian Bale is perhaps Hollywood’s most gifted shapeshifter, having undergone dramatic makeovers for “The Machinist,” “The Fighter,” “American Hustle,” and “Vice,” but his incarnation of Gorr the God Butcher in “Thor: Love and Thunder” may end up his most memorable.

Warning: This post will contain spoilers for the film "Barbarian."
Zach Cregger's 2022 film "Barbarian" is merely the latest in a long, long series of recent "creepy Airbnb" horror movies. This is a whole subgenre now that includes "The Rental," "Superhost," "A Perfect Host," and the upcoming "8 Found Dead." This new subgenre's immediate persistence implies that many members of the film-going public possess an inherent fear of Bed & Breakfasts. It's someone else's home, after all, and they have to track your behavior while staying in their home. It's an alien location with a certain degree of privacy stripped. The anonymity of a hotel room is absent. Airbnb horror movies -- Fearbnb? -- confirm a renter's worst nightmares. That there is something untoward at play.
That's certainly at play in "Barbarian," a film about a young woman (Georgina Campbell) who finds herself having to unexpectedly share a remote Detroit Airbnb with...

This article contains Barbarian spoilers.
Do not go down there. Just turn around and leave. This is a thought audiences have shared—and even screamed—in movie houses for as long as there have been horror pictures. Why did this ostensibly smart character make that dumb choice? Why did they not say, “nope!”
This is a question Zach Cregger’s Barbarian addresses head-on by having its heroine Tess (Georgina Campbell) time and again recognize what is the smart thing to do and what is the dangerous/foolish choice. And every time, Tess tests our sanity, and perhaps her own, by picking the latter.
By design, Barbarian is asking you why, and whether you would do the same. Perhaps, more importantly, it is also questioning whether you should.
When we meet Tess, she is a portrait of wary self-awareness. Upon discovering in the middle of the night that another person, a...

This article contains major Barbarian spoilers.
Before it goes off in directions that no one could have anticipated, Barbarian asks a simple and relatable question: When is it okay to be impolite? That question is posed in the movie’s opening scene, which finds Tess (Georgiana Campbell) arriving late at night at the Detroit house she’s rented via AirBnB, only to learn that it’s already been booked by a man called Keith (Bill Skarsgård). Tess, standing in the rain in a clearly rundown neighborhood, makes her agitation plain as she demands answers from the man in what was to be her space. Keith allows his irritation to slip as well, as he deals with the frustrated woman accosting him in the middle of the night.
They both have reasons to be rude. After a few tense minutes, politeness prevails, and the two treat each other kindly. Keith invites Tess inside and,...

Blunt: Amy Smart, Billy Zane, and more star in psychological thriller from Deadly Illusions director
Last year’s Deadly Illusions was the fourth feature directed by Anna Elizabeth James, but her first thriller. When it was released through the Netflix streaming service, it was the #1 movie on the service worldwide for eight days straight. So it makes sense that James’ fifth feature is also a thriller. This one is called Blunt and stars Amy Smart (Mirrors), Billy Zane (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight), Matt Davis (Terror of Dracula), Greer Grammer (Awkward), and Ne-Yo (Red Tails).
Smart’s character is
a single mother who wakes up to find herself hogtied and held captive at her country vacation rental by an unknown assailant. In a race against time, she must piece together clues from the previous guests to find out who assaulted her, and hopefully survive the ordeal.
Deadline reports that Voltage Pictures is handling global sales on Blunt and will be presenting it to potential buyers immediately.

Spoiler warning: The following article reveals the plot and ending of “Barbarian”
Rodents have made a decent name for themselves in movies like “Stuart Little,” “The Secret of Nimh,” “The Great Mouse Detective” and of course “Ratatouille.” But the horror hit “Barbarian” will not be joining that list, because a mid-movie scene involving Justin Long and a basement rat was left on the cutting room floor.
“What happened with the rat in the movie was so gory and so crazy,” editor Joe Murphy explained to TheWrap. “But while cutting the movie with [director] Zach [Cregger], we found that it was so horrific that it actually kind of slowed down the horror of the sequence it was in.”
In the film, Long plays a television actor named Aj, who flees Hollywood in the wake of a credible sexual assault accusation against him. He heads to a rental property that he owns in Detroit,...

Justin Long’s newest horror film, Barbarian, contains many chilling scenes, but there was one in particular he said was cut because it was far too “gross”.
Director Zach Creggers stars alongside Long, Bill Skarsgård, and Georgina Campbell in his thriller-mystery movie about a woman (Campbell) who finds her Airbnb-rented house is weirdly occupied by a stranger (Skarsgård). Against her better judgement, she decides to stay the night only to discover there’s more lurking in the house than just the stranger.
Since its late August release, the film has received critical praise, currently with 92 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Speaking about its success in a recent interview with Vulture, Long explained that there’s a “very thin line between something creepy, unsettling, and potentially cinematic and something that is over-the-top farce – for comical wrong reasons”.

This post contains major spoilers for "Barbarian."
The marketing of "Barbarian" has been extremely smart. It makes you believe that Bill Skarsgård's character has lured Georgina Campbell's character to this Detroit Airbnb, and perhaps some supernatural occurrences are happening in the basement of this home. Of course, when you see the film, that is not what is happening at all. Bill Skarsgård ends up dying at the end of the first act at the hands of a large, naked, middle-aged woman, who smashes his head against the stone corridor in the creepy basement. This woman, known simply as The Mother, comes to be the primary source of the thrills and chills of "Barbarian," even though we come to learn she is not the malicious being she first appears to be.
The Mother is played by actor Matthew Patrick Davis, who has made a pretty nice career for himself...

20th Century Studios has an original horror hit on their hands with Barbarian, which opened to 10 million here in the United States in its opening weekend. Positive word of mouth is largely responsible for the film’s opening weekend success, with Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro raving in her review that Barbarian is one of 2022’s biggest crowd-pleasers.
Barbarian has now been in theatrical release for 14 days here in the United States and the numbers remain strong, with the film’s domestic total now standing at 23,083,169.
Worldwide, Barbarian has scared up 24,119,359.
The even better news? Barbarian is expanding to More Theaters in its third week of release, with Exhibitor Relations reporting that it’s adding 550 new screens this weekend! In total, Barbarian will be playing in 2,890 theaters in the States beginning this weekend.

"Barbarian" spoilers follow.
"Barbarian" features a number of scenes best described as "disturbing." Whether it's seeing Bill Skarsgård's head getting smashed in by a giant, naked woman or something as quiet as a man flipping the latch on a woman's window to break into her home later, the movie does not pull any punches when it comes to depicting distressing material. That's what makes "Barbarian" such an adrenaline shot in the arm. The film throws so much at you that it becomes a cacophony of beautiful chaos. It makes tonal changes you do not see coming and shows you things you have never seen before.
Well, as it turns out, there was one punch they did pull. Writer/director Zach Cregger decided to scrap one particularly gnarly scene that would have had loads of people in the audience audibly yelping and squirming in their seats. While it would have...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have watched “The Barbarian,” playing in theaters now.
Actor Matthew Patrick Davis was flying blind when he signed on to play the monstrous Mother in 20th Century Studios’ horror hit, “Barbarian.”
“There are usually renderings that you can see, but I was not shown anything,” he explained, having auditioned for the role over Zoom. “I was on a plane to Bulgaria and crossing my fingers, hoping it would be convincing.”
Tests to perfect the look of the mutated matriarch in writer-director Zach Cregger’s suburban nightmare continued until the last minute. According to the actor, the first iteration was “a little cartoony” due to her
teeth and head being too big and breasts that “looked like she had cosmetic surgery.” The process involved feedback from both the director and Davis himself. Happy with the result, he admitted, “it was touch and go, but...

Stars: Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, Bill Skarsgard, Matthew Patrick Davis | Written and Directed by Zach Cregger
Georgina Campbell and Justin Long star in this twisted horror from writer-director Zach Cregger, about an Airbnb hiding a sinister secret. Cleverly structured, superbly acted and deeply creepy, it’s a dark-hearted tale that will make you think twice about booking that holiday apartment.
Barbarian‘s opening hook is immediately compelling. Twenty-something Tess arrives at her Airbnb in a rundown Detroit neighbourhood to discover there’s been a booking mix-up and a strange man, Keith (Bill Skarsgard), is already staying there. Having no other option – it’s late, local hotels are all booked up due to a medical convention, etc – Tess accepts Keith’s seemingly kind offer of taking the room while he sleeps on the couch, but she’s still cautious enough not to accept the drink he gives her.
However, when she...

Warning: Barbarian contains subject matter relating to sexual violence and incest that could be triggering for some viewers.
Barbarian was directed by Zach Cregger and stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, Justin Long and Matthew Patrick Davis. Campbell leads as a young woman who arrives in a Detroit AirBnb only to find a strange man (Skarsgård) staying there already.
This setup is rife with real-world paranoia already and you may think you know where this is all leading, but as the movie unfolds you won’t be able to predict some of the most shocking moments. If you don’t like squirm-in-your seat tension, this may not be your movie, as it hardly lets you have a moment to breathe as Campbell and Skarsgård explore this strange AirBnb more and more.

This article contains spoilers for "Malignant" and "Barbarian."
I went into "Barbarian" knowing nothing about the film beyond its logline and main cast. Dear reader, believe me when I tell you it was the best way possible to enjoy writer and director Zach Cregger's horror movie, a subversive take on the genre where the red herrings and misdirection are virtually indistinguishable from the actual foreshadowing. I would say I can't remember the last time a film took me on such a wild and unpredictable ride, but that isn't true. It was almost exactly a year to the day ago when the gonzo, go-for-broke swing that is James Wan's "Malignant" came out.
Both "Malignant" and "Barbarian" center on people who, when the films begin, are stuck in toxic situations. In "Malignant," Annabelle Wallis plays Madison, a pregnant woman who has had multiple miscarriages and is married to an abusive husband.

Like all movies, Barbarian was just an idea in its creator’s mind before cameras started rolling, and this week writer/director Zach Cregger has shared the “mood reel” that helped him sell the concept. "Barbarian" is the new horror movie released by 20th Century Studios, written and directed by first-timer Zach Cregger. If you've seen it, you'll know it's a chaotically insane movie with one surprising, messed-up twist after another and more than a few "wtf" moments. Critics, including our own Ryan Scott, are raving about how bonkers it is, with the main sentiment being that it's best to go into the theater knowing nothing about the film to be completely surprised by its wild turns.
The premise is simple enough. A young woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) travels to Detroit for a job interview and rents an Airbnb-style house only to discover it's already been rented to an awkward young man named Keith (Bill Skarsgård). She ends up deciding to stay in the house with him, and everything sort of goes crazy from there, with the trailers giving away the fact that something...

If you were a young woman arriving late at night to a rental home in a horribly rundown neighborhood and it turns out to be already occupied by another renter, would you stay there anyway? Add to that the fact the other tenant is played by Bill Skarsgard, aka the demonic clown Pennywise in the two Stephen King It films, and you’d think that the heroine would run for the hills. But then you wouldn’t have a horror film. Especially one as supremely gonzo as Zach Cregger’s solo feature debut, which pulls out all the stops to drive its audiences into a terrified frenzy.
It’s difficult to talk about Barbarian, because it relies so heavily on unexpected plot twists that defy your expectations. To relate almost anything that happens after the first act would constitute a spoiler. And I...

The start of the fall box office just got bleaker as Warner Bros is moving New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King vampire novel Salem’s Lot from Sept. 9 to April 21, 2023. I hear the move is due to Covid-related delays in the post production realm. The Gary Dauberman-directed pic also had a handful of days of additional photography six weeks ago.
That post Labor Day weekend is a rich one that Warner Bros/New Line created for horror movie fare, beginning with Stephen King’s It in 2017 which debuted to the month’s all-time record of 123.4M. Warner continued to tap that weekend in 2018 with The Nun which saw the best opening for The Conjuring franchise with 53.8M and again in 2019 with It: Chapter Two which debuted to 91M (Dauberman adapted the It movies for the big screen).

"This process might seem overwhelming..." 20th Century has revealed the first trailer for Barbarian, yet another rental home horror thriller, this one from actor / filmmaker Zach Cregger. We just posted another trailer a few days ago for a film, Gone in the Night, also about a doubled-booked rental - this is becoming a trend with thrillers. In town for a job interview, a young woman arrives at her Airbnb late at night only to find that her rental has been mistakenly double-booked and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to stay the night anyway, but soon discovers that there is much more to be afraid of in the house than the other guest. For example, here's a hilariously obscene song from The Shining: The Musical, entitled “Bash Your Fucking Brains In.” [Do I even need to warn you that this song is Nsfw?] <a data-cke-saved-href="http://mpdavis.bandcamp.com/album/the-shining-the-musical" href="http://mpdavis.bandcamp.com/album/the-shining-the-musical"&... Shining! The Musical! by Davis & Sons</a> Another impressive sample of Davis's work is this promotional scene from a proposed stage adaptation of Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas, in which Davis portrays protagonist Jack Skellington while performing “Jack's Lament,” originally written and performed for the film by Danny Elfman. Posted in 2012, the clip has generated a fair amount of buzz from fans eager to see it come to the attention of Burton, Elfman, Disney and the rest of the powers-that-be behind Nightmare. While that apparently hasn't happened yet, it's still an excellent performance, hinting at the wild possibilities of a fully-backed stage production.
