In the manner characteristic of low-budget “issue” films, writer-director Barry Jenkins’s Medicine for Melancholy is a triptych of progressive themes—reluctant romance, race, and urban displacement—interwoven by the circuitous gab of an unremarkable but authentic two-person cast. Each of these three topics is given its own compartmentalized narrative thread, but unlike with other multi-layered works of metropolitan malaise (The Visitor immediately springs to mind), all three of the socio-humanist plotlines uniformly fail along with the leads’ addled relationship.
At dawn, African-American bedfellows Micah (Wyatt Cenac) and Jo (Tracey Heggins) retrace the inebriated, hormonal footsteps of an impromptu one-night stand with humiliating ignorance. Jo resists Micah’s sober advances but Micah continues hounding, suffering from the misconception that their accidental sex possessed a germ of meaning. Biographical details begin to emerge. Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, handed out top honors to 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska at this afternoon’s 29th Film Independent Spirit Awards. Film Independent announced nominations for the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards this morning.
Film Independent President Josh Welsh presided over the press conference held at the W Hollywood, with actresses Octavia Spencer and Paula Patton presenting the nominations.
Nominees for Best Feature included 12 Years a Slave, All Is Lost, Frances Ha, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska.
Mud was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast.
In its commitment to recognizing the importance of below the line contributions to the art of filmmaking, Film Independent has now introduced, for the first year, the Best Editing category in the Spirit Awards.

Team Fox Searchlight should be returning to the winner’s circle at the next edition of the Indie Spirits awards. After winning with Black Swan three years back, and losing out in the Best Feature category with Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Descendants, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave leads all other films with seven nominations Best Feature, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and three of the four acting categories. Alexander Payne’s Nebraska follows with six noms. Both Sundance (Fruitvale Station) and SXSW (Short Term 12) winners figure among the noms, but they weren’t as plentiful with only three noms a piece. Among our favorite titles for 2013 which were left off the scorecard, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George Saints got no recognition, while Eliza Hittman’s It Felt Like Love would have got my vote for the Annual Someone To Watch Award.

A night-in-the-life look at four suburban teenagers and their friends on the last night of summer, David Robert Mitchell’s directorial debut, The Myth of the American Sleepover, has enjoyed a highly successful film festival run, including stops at SXSW and Cannes. Now, as the film is reaching theaters and VOD nationwide, we e-interviewed Mitchell and producer Adele Romanski about the film, teenagers and nights of turmoil and trouble.
When did you both first start working on what would become The Myth of the American Sleepoverr?
David: I wrote a first draft of the script in 2002. I passed it around a bit in Los Angeles, and although several people liked it, no one wanted to put money down. A few years passed, during which time I started working as an editor. I was frustrated because I felt like I had so many stories I wanted to tell, but no avenues to do so.

The 2011 SXSW Film Festival will feature the North American premiere of Marie Losier‘s The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, a much-anticipated documentary that chronicles the love story of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife Lady Jaye. Screening times have not been released yet, but the festival runs this year on March 11-19 at its regular home of Austin, Texas.
Genesis and Lady Jaye had a unique relationship in which, in addition to getting married, they attempted to meld together as a single pandrogynous entity known as Breyer P-Orridge. (The “Breyer” portion of the name coming from Jaye’s maiden name.) The couple both underwent plastic surgery and hormone therapy together, as well as starting to cross-dress and adopt perfectly identical mannerisms and behaviors.
Unfortunately, Jaye passed away in 2007, although Genesis continues to live his life as Breyer P-Orridge.

The South By Southwest Film Conference and Festival announced this year's features lineup. The festival takes place March 11-19 in Austin, Texas.
There are a total of 130 features screening this year including 60 world premieres, 12 North American premieres and 16 U.S. premieres! This year the a total of 1,792 feature-length films were submitted, which is the most ever.
There are going to be some amazing films shown this yea. Opening night kicks off with Duncan Jones' Source Code (Moon). The fest rolls on with Jodie Foster‘s The Beaver, Greg Mottola‘s Paul, Sundance Grand Prize doc winner How to Die in Oregon, Errol Morris‘ Tabloid, Victoria Mahoney‘s Yelling to the Sky, Azazel Jacob‘s Terri. There will also be a special screening of Catherine Hardwicke‘s Red Riding Hood.
The Midnight and SXFantastic sections will be announced with the shorts program next week.

The South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) just announced their entire 2011 feature film lineup, and there’s isn’t a lot of note, with regards to this blog’s focus.
Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).

NEW YORK -- IFC Films has nabbed worldwide rights to writer-director Barry Jenkins' romantic drama Medicine for Melancholy.
Jenkins' feature debut, which premieres Friday in competition at the L.A. Film Festival, revolves around an African-American couple dealing with issues of class and identity in San Francisco's black community. Wyatt Cenac (Fox's King of the Hill) and Tracey Heggins star.
The film, produced by Justin Barber and Cherie Saulter, "will not only inspire and ignite great discussions among the African-American community but is sure to engage audiences across the globe," said IFC Entertainment president Jonathan Sehring.
IFC mainly acquires U.S. or North American rights to features, but has recently started acquiring more worldwide rights to American indies like the Cannes fest entry The Pleasure of Being Robbed and Medicine. Sehring said that while there are no plans for an IFC international theatrical distribution or sales arm, in-house employees may pursue overseas sales for Medicine to foreign distributors after it hits the international fest circuit.
Sehring referenced IFC parent Cablevision's acquisition of Sundance Channel and said his company was looking at new distribution models for indie cinema, hinting that a global network is one possible initiative being explored.
