ABC is renewing the lion’s share of its most high-profile unscripted series for the 2024-2025 TV season. Among the shows back are “American Idol,” “The Bachelor” and “Dancing with the Stars” (which is also simulcast on Disney+).
Also returning: “Celebrity Jeopardy!” and “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” as well as “What Would You Do?” and “Shark Tank.” Decisions are still to be made on a handful of other unscripted series.
For “Dancing with the Stars,” this reps the 33rd cycle of the show, which is hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough and features a panel of judges including Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough. BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions produces.

Jeopardy! super-champ Amy Schneider is the Producers’ Pick for the upcoming Masters tournament and the show’s bosses are sticking by that decision despite fan backlash. On the latest episode of the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, the show’s executive producer, Michael Davies, and fellow producer, Sarah Whitcomb Foss, discussed the thought process behind selecting Schneider for the final Masters spot, citing both ratings and skill. “Understand that we get a lot of data, and we’ve talked before about how we share the buzzer data, how we see the players. We’re also evaluating constantly how people are playing against a certain level of material, which is another very important thing,” Davies explained. “Plus, this being — and I make no apologies for it — Jeopardy! is an entertainment television program,” he continued. “We do have to look at and work with the network on social media reach and popularity, and the...

Jeopardy! producers Michael Davies and Sarah Whitcomb Foss have hit back at those who have accused the show of “recency bias” in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament. This comes after some fans, as well as Jit semi-finalist Jennifer Quail, slammed the show for its alleged favoritism towards recent fan favorites, such as 2022 Tournament of Champions winner Amy Schneider and the Toc runner-ups Andrew He and Sam Buttrey. Schneider and He were the first two contestants to qualify for the Jit final and had Buttrey won last Thursday’s (April 4) game, it would have resulted in a 2022 Toc and Jeopardy! Masters rematch. “See, yesterday and today is why I feel like the three people who knew a year in advance they’d be here should have had to play each other in the semis or quarters, because we’re one game away from it making no difference, it would just be a Masters repeat,...

Jeopardy! is celebrating a significant milestone as it turns 60 years old.
The long-running trivia show has undergone several changes throughout the decades, but if there’s one thing that comes to mind when viewers think of Jeopardy!, it’s Alex Trebek.
Alex served as Jeopardy!’s host for 37 years, and it didn’t take long for him to become a household name.
But Alex had to step down from his position when his battle with pancreatic cancer interfered with his career, and sadly, Alex lost his battle with cancer in November 2020.
Although Alex is gone, he’s certainly not forgotten, as evidenced by a recent campaign announced by Jeopardy!
On Instagram, Jeopardy! announced its 60th birthday in a post dedicated to Alex and his legacy.

Jeopardy! has been experimenting with format tweaks over the past year, including contestant and puzzle board split screens and, more controversially, encouraging contestants to recite the entire category names. However, as many viewers have noticed during the currently airing Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament, the show seems to have relaxed its rule that contestants must read out the whole category every time they select a clue. The game show’s executive producer, Michael Davies, confirmed this rule relaxation on a recent episode of Inside Jeopardy! podcast, where he admitted the change didn’t quite work as intended. “I dont think we’ve made a perfect change,” Davies said. “We had briefed the contestants to give full names of categories… and then people have commented on that.” “We’ve obviously gone back,” he continued. “If it’s a 12-word category, we’re not asking you to repeat all 12 words. It was getting a little informal,...

There is a possible “terrifying” change brewing at Jeopardy! and it could happen any moment now. A lot has happened this last year at the long-running game show. Yet, this is something that would affect viewing and fans do not like those changes. Read on for more details.
Possible ‘Terrifying’ Jeopardy! Changes Brewing
Game show viewers like consistency and that makes perfect sense. They were up in arms when things shifted in the way the letter board was controlled on Wheel of Fortune. Yes, it was a sign of the evolving times and technology. However, diehard fans struggled to adapt, and with good reason. Changes could be afoot for the syndicated iteration of Jeopardy!
Michael Davies, the iconic game show’s executive producer, has some ideas about how to make it easier for viewers to play along at home.
In the latest edition of the Inside Jeopardy! Podcast, he revealed his belief that some audience members “get very lost in our gameplay.”
“Now, with all of the Daily Double hunting, people jump all over. They go to the deeper dollar value first and jump all over the board,” he added.
“I don’t think it would ever be natural to dictate players to play in a certain order.”
Celebrity Jeopardy! previously tried to remedy this by using clues displayed on a split screen instead of a whole screen.

It’s been a chaotic few years for American quiz show institution Jeopardy!
Following the death of legendary longtime host Alex Trebek in 2020, Jeopardy! embarked on a sprawling search for a replacement with 16 guest hosts vying to fill Trebek’s enormous shoes. Ultimately Jeopardy! producer Mike Richards chose himself for the role. He was then quickly fired when audio resurfaced of him using offensive language on some podcasts.
Goat Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings and The Big Bang Theory actress Mayim Bialik were then tapped as co-hosts. But in December of 2023, Bialik was also let go from the show, leaving Jennings as the sole remaining host and ultimate heir to Trebek’s throne. While some theorized that Bialik’s own history of controversial statements led to her firing, executive producer Michael Davies recently revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour that wasn’t the case.

Jeopardy! has been a bit all over the place since longtime host Alex Trebek passed away in 2020.
The series had a rotating panel of guest hosts before settling on fan-favorite contestant Ken Jennings and The Big Bang Theory alum Mayim Bialik.
That all came crashing down earlier this year when Bialik revealed she had been informed she would no longer be hosting the syndicated iteration of the show.
Months later, producers are speaking out about the thought process behind the decision.
Executive producer Michael Davies got candid about the situation with reporters on Saturday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, revealing that in the end, Jennings “really won the job.”
Davies said the multi-hosting situation helped because of Bialik’s commitments to Call Me Kat.

Michael Davies, Jeopardy! EP, is opening up about Mayim Bialik’s departure from the game show after she announced it in December.
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Saturday, Davies said that when he “took over the show, we were forced into that situation from everything that had happened before, the guest hosting period.”
“Mayim was left hosting the primetime versions. I brought in Ken [Jennings] to guest host because Mayim had her schedule, her Fox sitcom [Call Me Kat], so couldn’t host all the episodes,” he said.
“Over the past two and a half seasons, what we’ve heard a lot from our television stations and other interested parties is they were looking for more consistency. They wanted a single host,” he continued. “Mayim is a superb host on Jeopardy! We hope to continue working with her on primetime versions [and] other spinoffs of the show.

The Bachelor producers froze Saturday when asked at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour about why the franchise seemingly has a hard time handling racial issues.
During a panel featuring showrunners from Jeopardy, Dancing With the Stars and Shark Tank, NPR’s Eric Deggans polled Bachelor producing trio Jason Ehrlich, Claire Freeland (both newcomers) and franchise veteran Bennett Graebner about why former star Rachel Lindsay and Matt James were both critical about how the Warners-produced franchise talks about race.
Freeland, who joined the Warner Bros. TV-produced Bachelor franchise in January 2023, attempted a response by saying that the show’s goal is to “represent the country” before shifting away from the question. Deggans, a respected veteran journalist and TCA member, then reiterated the question in a more direct fashion. At that point, all three producers remained mum for around 10 seconds, creating one of the more awkward moments of press tour.

Though Mayim Bialik was fired from the “Jeopardy!” flagship syndicated series in December, the door is still open to bring her back for other versions, according to executive producer Michael Davies.
On a panel about unscripted television during ABC’s presentation at the Television Critics Assn. winter 2024 press tour, Davies said the decision to remove Bialik and keep Ken Jennings as solo host came from a pursuit of “more consistency.”
“When I took over the show, we were forced into that situation,” said Davies, referring to the two-host setup. “Over the past two and a half seasons, what we’ve heard from a lot of from television stations and other interested parties is that they wanted more consistency. They wanted a single host.
“Mayim is a superb host,” he added. “We hope to continue working with her on primetime versions — this conversation is ongoing.”

Until the writers’ strike (which began in May 2023), Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik had been splitting hosting duties for Jeopardy!. Then, out of solidarity with the writers, Bialik stepped back and Jennings filled in as host. Then, in December 2023, nearly two months after the writers’ strike ended, Bialik revealed on Instagram that she had been told by the studio that she wouldn’t be returning to the game show. “We were forced into that [multi-host] situation, because of everything that had happened before with the guest-hosting period,” executive producer Michael Davies said at the 2024 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour. “Mayim was left hosting the primetime versions, and I brought in Ken to guest-host because Mayim had her Fox sitcom.” According to the EP, the decision was made due to feedback those at the ...

Mayim Bialik is no longer going to be involved with Jeopardy.
The Big Bang Theory grad posted on her verified social media account Friday that Jeopardy producers Sony Pictures Television informed her that she will “no longer be hosting the syndicated version of Jeopardy.”
Bialik — and co-host Ken Jennings — were both nominated for Daytime Emmys for their roles alternating at the lectern left vacant by the passing of the beloved Alex Trebek. Sony tapped Bialik and Jennings to split hosting duties of the long-running syndicated game show last year, capping a months-long period in which the series underwent a messy transition that saw now-former showrunner Mike Richards tap himself for the host role after a series of guest judges. He was let go a week later after many outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter, reported on the previous discrimination lawsuits he was involved in during his time as executive producer on The Price Is Right.

Mayim Bialik will no longer be part of the Jeopardy! hosting team.
The actor posted the news on Instagram on Friday.
The move comes as Ken Jennings has been hosting Season 40 of the syndicated show by himself.

Jeopardy! exec producer Michael Davies, who took over as exec producer and showrunner on a permanent basis last year, admitted that a lot of his plans for Season 40 and the post-season episodes had been “derailed” and that the show was now in a “holding pattern”.

Jennings is expected to handle the new season of the show solo instead of alternating dates with Mayim Bialik as they’ve been doing since Sept. 2021. Jennings will also host Celebrity Jeopardy! “Jeopardy!” showrunner Michael Davies revealed earlier this month that material for the star-studded spinoff series’ second season was completed before the WGA went on strike, so the upcoming season will feature completely original material. While Bialik and Jennings split hosting duties on “Jeopardy!,” the former was the sole host for Season 1 of “Celebrity Jeopardy!,” featuring such guests as Simu Liu, Andy Richter, Aisha Tyler, Michael Cera and more.

Jeopardy!‘s landmark 40th season, set to premiere September 11, was meant to be a time of celebration but is now in a state of chaos amid the ongoing WGA strike. Showrunner Michael Davies announced earlier this week that Season 40 will begin with a Second Chance tournament featuring contestants from Season 37. This will be followed by a Champions Wild Card tournament pitting the winners of the Second Chance competition against Season 38 champions. However, Davies confirmed that these new Jeopardy! episodes will be using recycled material and questions written prior to the strikes. This has caused much controversy among the Jeopardy! community, with both fans and former contestants blasting the show for going ahead despite the strikes. One thing Davies didn’t announce was who would be hosting the upcoming 40th season. It was originally assumed that Ken Jennings would front the show, especially as Mayim Bialik pulled out of the tapings...

This…is…Jeopardy! But the way former champ James Holhauzer sees it, the show may as well be in jeopardy. While the hit game show has gone through a number of changes following the 2020 death of Alex Trebek – including a rotation of guest hosts ranging from naturals to Dr. Oz – it has faced yet another challenge amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Chiefly: who will write the questions? As it turns out: whoever already wrote them.
As announced on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast, producer Michael Davies said that the “most optimal solution” moving forward as the strike rages would be to re-use questions / answers from past seasons or utilize those that were written pre-strike and have former contestants buzzing in. “I also believe principally that it would not be fair to have new contestants making their first appearance on the Alex Trebek stage doing it with non-original material or...

“Jeopardy!” is making some changes for their upcoming 40th season amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
Showrunner Michael Davies shared an update on the long-running trivia show — hosted by Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings — on Monday’s episode of the “Inside Jeopardy!” podcast, sharing that the show’s fall season will re-use questions and bring back past runners-up to compete again.
“I believe, principally, that it would not be fair to have new contestants making their first appearance on the Alex Trebek Stage with non-original material,” Davies explained. “We’re going to open the season with a second chance tournament for players from season 37 who lost their initial game. Winners from that will advance to a season 37 and season 38 Champions Wildcard.”
The season 40 questions, he added, will be “a combination of material that our WGA writers wrote before the strike, which is still in the database, and material...

James Holzhauer is taking aim at Jeopardy! producers after they announced that Season 40 of the show would continue amid the writers strike.
The Jeopardy! champion took to social media to call out producers of the game show after executive producer Michael Davies revealed on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast that the new season would recycle questions and contestants from the past.
“If you don’t have time to listen, here’s the executive summary of today’s announcement,” Holzhauer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The game show winner then cited the seemingly opposing comments from Davies, adding, “1:00-2:00: Jeopardy’s writers are invaluable and we couldn’t produce the show without them. 2:00-15:00: Here is how we will produce the upcoming season without them.”
