Sometimes I will sit down to watch a movie based solely on the fact that on paper it has checked some of my boxes! While that list does seem to be getting longer by the movie I still can’t help having to satisfy my British low-budget itch. Let me tell you though, I get even more excited when I see we are dealing with an Irish crime caper set partially in Malta.
Broken bones, stolen Bearer bonds, pregnant mobsters, super spy’s, dodgy priests (careful) and a pair of comedic gangland clowns… Kind of sounds like the title of Guy Ritchie’s autobiography. However… that… it is not, for you see dear reader today we are talking about Danny Patrick’s movie The Irish Connection.

Christian extremist brothers Tim and Vic (Harry Melling and Tom Brooke) are on a mission. Sent to Ilkley in the Yorkshire dales, they have been charged with assassinating atheist writer John Huxley (Roger Allam), but a botched initial attempt which left another man dead has put a hard-nosed cop (Anna Maxwell Martin) on their trail.
There are promising ideas and a few good jokes at the beginning of this satirical black comedy. The cold open with Tim sharing a jam sandwich with the man he and his brother are about to kill is gently funny because we know that something is coming and the incongruous appearance of a male voice choir among the rolling hills, singing the score over the opening title is a funny fourth wall break. The first act continues to work fairly well after this, with Anna Maxwell Martin clearly having fun slightly overplaying the tough cop...

Singer Ed Sheeran is set to give acting a try in a recurring role on upcoming FX series "The Bastard Executioner."
The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, writing that Sheeran will play Sir Cormac, described by the trade as "an ambitious and deadly protégé of a high-ranking church elder." As THR notes, this will be the second collaboration between Sheeran and "Executioner" creator Kurt Sutter; Sheeran previously contributed a bluesy cover of the Foy Vance song "Make It Rain" to "Sons of Anarchy"'s final season, after the British songwriter revealed that he was a big fan of Sutter's biker drama.
"Bastard Executioner" will keep up Sutter's penchant for high-stakes drama, only this time, the action is set in the 1300s. The show is described by THR as "a blood-soaked medieval epic that tells the story of a 14th century warrior whose life is forever changed when a divine messenger...

Stephen Moyer apparently has a thing for period garb.
The actor, who spent a good portion of his time on True Blood stuck in the 1800s, has signed on to star opposite Katey Sagal in Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter’s 14th century-set drama pilot The Bastard Executioner, TVLine has learned.
In a surprising move, Sutter himself is set to play a major role in the potential series. Additionally, Aussie newcomer Lee Jones has snagged the title role, and The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys will guest-star in the project.
