Doha (Qatar), Nov 24 (Ians) Spain’s 7-0 win over Costa Rica is one of the biggest wins in the recent World Cup finals and given the way that teams from what were traditionally not considered footballing nations have improved drastically in recent years, wins such as Spain’s are getting rarer and rarer.
The increasing number of players from Asia and Africa now playing in European leagues and the money invested in their domestic competitions means sides are now much better prepared, both physically and tactically.
However, that wasn’t always the case, as a look back at some of the biggest historical results in the World Cup finals shows.
The heaviest-ever defeat in the World Cup finals came in Spain in 1982 when Hungary defeated El Salvador 10-1 in their opening group game, with four of the goals coming in 11 chaotic second-half minutes as El Salvador fell apart.

The sports world is mourning the death of Emilio Ballack, the 18-year-old son of soccer star Michael Ballack. A spokesperson for Portugal's Setúbal emergency services told Reuters the teen died at 2:17 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5 after being involved in a quad bike accident in Troia. The news organization reported firefighters and police officers rushed over to help but that Emilio died at the scene. Chelsea Football Club, which Michael play for from 2006 to 2010, expressed its condolences shortly after the news broke. "Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18," a tweet from the team...

Today on World AIDS Day 2014 we ask you to join us and speak out in solidarity with people living with and affected by HIV.
We have come such a long way—today new HIV infections are declining, better and simpler treatment is now available and people living with HIV are now living longer and healthier lives.
But significant challenges remain and we need to fast-track change.
We must close the gap between people who have access to HIV prevention and treatment and people who do not. We must close the gap between people with opportunities and people who are being left behind.
We want more results
We want to end the AIDS epidemic
We know that together we can do it
We are seeing remarkable progress, but we are not there yet
But gender inequalities, violations of human rights and even our own attitudes can leave people behind. People most...

One of the highlights of the footballing calender year is without a doubt the summer transfer window and the prospect of seeing a new star man at your club, and even else where if you are a proper football fan.
The arrival of the likes of Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez in his West Ham United days and even Luis Suarez (Biting aside) in the Premier League surely left the majority of fans anticipating the talent they had to provide on the pitch, but lets not forget Robinho, it never always works out!
However, it’s not just about big money being spent to “buying yourself to glory” as such, Michael Ballack made a high profile move to Stamford Bridge and not a penny was spent, and the same could be said for the likes of Mark Schwarzer, Sol Campbell and Jay Jay Okocha to Fulham, Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers respectively.

All things considered, it cannot be denied that Chelsea’s tenure under Roman Abramovich has been utterly successful. The man seems to understand and have a passion for football, and has an unwavering desire to win at all costs. And when I say at any cost, that truly means at any cost.
Abramovich has opened his cheque book to sign numerous players for extortionate amounts of money (not to mention all the severance packages for all the managers he sacked). This summer alone, Chelsea spent approximately £80 million on players such as Eden Hazard and Oscar, and there are no signs that the spending will stop there with the January transfer window now open. His greatest signings, in a list including Didier Drogba, Petr Cech, Claude Makelele, Michael Ballack, Ashley Cole, Juan Mata, etc., etc., have led Chelsea to three Premier League titles, four Fa Cups and most importantly of all last year’s Champions League.

After a breathless Euro 2012 group stage that gave us goals! and racism! and underpants fines! and the resurrection of insufferable British soccer fans! and Mario Balotelli! we have established a quarterfinals lineup that pretty much satisfies the ravenous soccer fan’s insatiable appetite for the beautiful game, England’s presence notwithstanding.
We arrive at the knockout stages with the (perhaps greedy) hope that the matches will open up Even More now that teams must win to advance. We’ve already seen some crazy results in this tournament, so clearly quality on paper can be thrown out the window. A tactical preview, while interesting, is futile.
With that in mind, we’ll attempt to answer the question soccer fans everywhere want to know: Who deserves to win Euro 2012? We’ll look at each team from cultural and fan perspectives in an attempt to discern the answer. Before we begin, though, we...

I would pay a Lot of money to spend a week with Michael Ballack, especially if he would agree to sing me the East German national anthem before I went to sleep every night. But that's neither here nor there. You can be sure that the ersatz Espn analyst loved today's action in the Group of Death, though, since his Germans beat the Netherlands and essentially guaranteed them first place in Group B. If he were here right now, he might say, "Yes, de skeel of de German was good, and I think dey play good today."
But before Germany rolled over Holland, Portugal played an exciting match against Denmark, surprise winners over the Dutch in the previous match. The Portuguese won, 3-2, thanks to a late strike from substitute Silvestre Varela:
Mario Gomez followed that up with a brace that gave Germany a 2-1 win over Holland. Can't wait...

Since Andrey Arshavin shows up exclusively to play well at the Euro and collect a paycheck when a team like Arsenal overpays for him, it’s no surprise that the tiny Russian helped spur his nation to a quick lead over the Czech Republic. But in spite of Russia’s chances, the Czechs pulled one back, and it was a beauty. Vaclav Plasil, you are your nation's lone source of pride today.
And hey, how 'bout those opening two matches? An exciting 1-1 draw between Poland and Greece, followed by an offensive shootout between Russia and the Czechs that looks like it will end in a 4-1 victory for the Motherland is as good as one could hope for from what's considered the tournament's weakest group. The tournament should only get better as the days go on.

Chelsea travel to Germany tonight to take on Bayer Leverkusen in a Champions League encounter where a result tonight will send them into the knockout stages. The Blues have only won one match in their last four games and manager Andre-Villas Boas has come under incredible scrutiny and many are starting to wonder whether he will make it to the end of the season as the boss at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea currently top the group with eight points attained from four matches, Leverkusen currently two points behind in second. Certainly if Chelsea don’t qualify for the knockout phases you can guarantee Villas-Boas will be gone as Roman Abramovich’s main agenda is to win the competition. To progress tonight they need to be aware of former midfielder Michael Ballack will be playing his 100th European tie and will be desperate to put one over his former side.

A highly polished performance from Andre Villas-Boas’ Chelsea enabled them to come out on top over strong opposition in the form of Bayer Leverkusen. Second half goals from David Luiz and Juan Mata earned the Blues 3 vital points in their opening group game, though the game could have been different had ex-Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack scored an easy chance at the beginning of the second half. A frustrating display from Fernando Torres was eventually capped with two assists.
Chelsea welcomed Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge for their first Champion’s League group game of the season and were hoping to get three points on the board after a successful but unexceptional start to the domestic campaign. The Blues had never lost at home to a German team, but a strong Leverkusen side were looking to change this, led by ex-Chelsea midfielder Ballack.

And so it begins once again tonight for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, his annual quest for the holy grail of the Champions League that he so desperately wants to bring to Stamford Bridge and will spend hundreds of millions and sack any and every manager who is unable to deliver it.
New boss Andre-Villas Boas must know that the Champions League is what turns the Russian owner on and he will want to get off to a storming start tonight at home to Bayer Leverkusen. And history is definitely on their side as Chelsea have never lost at home to German opposition and they are unbeaten in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge in eight years, whilst Leverkusen usually come unstuck against English sides, winning just 2 of 15 attempts against Premier League sides.

German National Football Team takes third place at World Cup
A German sports agent named Michael Becker is making some interesting claims about the current lineup Germany's national football team.
Der Spiegel quotes him as claiming there's a "bunch of gays" in the new lineup and under the leadership of new head coach Joachim Löw there's some sort of gay conspiracy afoot.
Becker comes off as quite the patriarchal blowhard in this piece. He has an apparent axe to grind since his big client is the German team's injured captain Michael "the bulge" Ballack.
Michael Ballack
Ballack wasn't able to play at the World Cup, but that "bunch of gays" seemed to do quite well without him – securing a third-place finish. And that's not all, young player Thomas Muller got the World Cup's coveted Golden Boot award for most goals by an individual player. (For more on the World Cup generally,...

The 2010 Fifa World Cup kicked off last week in Johannesburg, South Africa reuniting thirty-two elite futbol teams from around the world. Every four years, the best of the best meet to play for the title of the best team in the world. These games are highly watched and in the 2006 finals in Germany, 715.1 million viewers tuned in to see Italy take out France 5-3. While many are intensely fixated on the games, we can't stop and notice the sizzling shirtless studs on the field! Before tracking down to South Africa for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, some of the stars gathered for a photoshoot with Vanity Fair. Thirty-eight days before the games began, famed photographer Annie Leibovitz gathered; Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, the U.S.A.’s Landon Donovan, Brazil’s Kaka and Pato, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon,...

Artwork courtesy of Espn and the Am I Collective. The German soccer team is commonly labeled as clinical, ruthless, and utterly determined. These are words that bend both ways. You might not want to share a beer with someone with those qualities, but you might not mind rooting for a team that bears them. Germany has won the World Cup three times; only Brazil and Italy have won more. The last time Germany didn’t reach the quarterfinals was in 1978. But perhaps most impressive of all, Germany has appeared in four of the last seven finals. Up until last fall, it looked dead on track to reap another round of devastation on its opponents, as it sailed through qualifying without a loss in ten matches—that included handing Guus Hiddink-coached Russia its first-ever World Cup qualifying defeat on home soil. But in November, Robert Enke, the team’s starting goalkeeper,...

Artwork courtesy of Espn and the Am I Collective. Beware the Black Stars! With three cornerstone players—Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, and John Mensah—struggling to return to form after injuries, you might be tempted to dismiss Ghana as a threat. That would be a mistake. At the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, the team relied heavily on young call-ups from the Satellites—the Ghanaian side that beat Brazil to win the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup—and made it all the way to the finals before bowing to Egypt 1-0. Ghana may lack a defining presence up front, but with or without the veterans the defense is stellar and the midfield is rock solid. Now that Germany has lost Michael Ballack to injury, Group D might be wide open. Oh, and about that injury—it was the result of a heel to Ballack’s foot, dished out by Kevin-Prince Boateng, a...

Los Angeles - Football has long been called 'the beautiful game,' and now even people who don't follow the world's favourite sport might agree. On Tuesday, Us magazine published photos of some of the biggest football stars in the world stripped down to their underpants. The magazine placed semi-nude Ronaldo and Drogba on its front cover, while on the inside pages fans could ogle the scantily clad figures...

The publicity machine for Matt Damon and Emily Blunt in an intriguing Philip K. Dick project grinds into action and a sneak preview of a second flick screens in London…
Movie makers love Philip K. Dick. It's all Ridley Scott's fault. Hey, they don't always treat his stories with great respect, but his work continues to prove a rich source of ideas for Hollywood.
Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report are all legendary in their own ways. A Scanner Darkly is a bit of a cult classic. Paycheck and Next? Well, let's move on, eh?
This year will see two more of his stories hit the big screen. Of those two, The Adjustment Bureau is certainly the higher profile one, and it also happens to be the most interesting.
Radio Free Abelmuth is the other and has Alanis Morisette in it. I'm saying no more, apart from blessing...
