If you make seven seasons of a show, change comes with the territory. It’s something that Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein and Jonathan Krisel, the principals behind IFC’s “Portlandia,” acknowledge fully. But the stars and director also point out that what’s made their extended run possible is their ability to play around with the show’s format.

“We’ve had the latitude with which to be experimental,” Brownstein said to IndieWire during the Television Critics Association press tour. “To go from something that started out as pretty traditional sketch, in terms of laying the subject matter, and then working with longer narrative forms in Seasons 3, 4, and 5. And then this year we went back to sketch. So there is an elasticity that I think we really relish.

You know you're in for a good hour of television when the first thing you hear is the opening guitar riff to Boston's "More Than a Feeling," and that was certainly the case on tonight's installment of "The Walking Dead." The episode was filled with inspired music cues – including a great Old 97's tune that scored Daryl and Rick's scavenging road trip – but that first scene really set the tone for the episode, and almost read to me like the beginning of a romantic comedy (leading man gets ready for his day to the strains of classic rock, banters with his children, teases his live-in girlfriend friend about toothpaste). Taking that lighthearted introduction into account, the episode's amorous ending really shouldn't have come as much of a shock.

As Guardians Of The Galaxy gears up for its Blu-ray/DVD release, director James Gunn has shared an alternate soundtrack to the film which he's dubbed "Awesome Mix Volume Zero". These songs are much more high energy and definitely a little more obscure than most of the classics from Volume 1, but there's a few great tunes in there. Take a look, see which ones you recognize and if there's any you don't, get listening! 1. Never Wanted to Dance - Mindless Self Indulgence 2. Party Hard - Andrew W.K. 3. The Way It Was - Aceyalone (feat Bionik) 4. I Like It, I Love It - Lyrics Born 5. Let's Dance to Joy Division - The Wombats 6. Start Wearing Purple - Gogol Bordello 7. Ben Vereen - Pigeon John 8. Teenagers - My Chemical Romance 9. Black Fist - Juskwam and Lyrikill 10. Timebomb - The Old 97's Here's what Gunn had to say about this new compilation: On lighter days,...

The soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy set a record this year by becoming the first to top the charts without any new songs on it, and the album – Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 – has since been certified gold. Now director James Gunn, who selected the record's songs and even wrote them into the script, has shared a playlist for a new mixtape, Awesome Mix Volume Zero, which features music by more contemporary artists, like Andrew W.K., the Old 97's and Lyrics Born, than the Seventies-centric artists of its predecessor.

Movie cliches are unavoidable; the director only has two-odd hours to take you from start to finish, so whether a high school's social structure is built on a thin foundation of classic nerd and jock stereotypes or a wedding is abruptly interrupted by the aw-shucks nice guy who's finally ready to spill his guts, there's bound to be some shortcuts along the way.
But sometimes Hollywood takes it a bit further, hitting us with cliches that are so oddly specific (and frequently divorced from reality) that they make you wonder if they've been written by a random plot-generating robot with limited resources and a tenuous grasp on the human experience. So sit back, relax, and set your deja vu detectors to "on" as we break down ten insanely specific things that are commonplace in the movieverse.

It's time once again for the annual lineup announcement for the Austin City Limits music festival, the increasingly popular fall gathering in Texas that last year delivered new music from Coldplay and a stirring performance by Kanye West.
Last year, festival organizers went outside the box with their preannouncement teasers and unveiled a few noteworthy players via a series of lo-fi scratch-off cards and their "Acl Lineup Lottery." The scratch-off cards proved to be such a big hit last year that the fest's organizers once again teased their lineup with the lottery, which the crafty folks at Brooklyn Vegan used to reveal that Steve Earle, Delta Spirit, Punch Brothers, Quiet Company and LP would be a part of the 130-band lineup. If you've never been to San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Park then you may not know that it's the kind of place where barefoot types are very likely to break out into spontaneous dance between bouts of stick juggling and hula hooping.
Which is why the lineup for the 2011 Outside Lands Music & Art Festival is perfect for the historic patch of green in the City by the Bay. The fourth annual edition of the fest, scheduled for August 12-14, will be headlined by Muse, Phish (who will play two sets), Arcade Fire, the Black Keys, Mgmt, the Decemberists, Erykah Badu and the Warren Haynes Band.

This morning I was woken up nearly two hours before my alarm was supposed to go off in such a way that I knew I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep in time to make it worthwhile. It's a special kind of frustrating, realizing that you're up too early without enough sleep but that trying to get back to sleep will only be a pointless and frustrating endeavor that will probably result in you falling back asleep 20 minutes before your alarm goes off which will just make you cranky for the rest of the day. Instead, I got up which will assure that I'm just kind of slow and tired for the rest of the day. Yay for no-win scenarios! Here's your Wednesday night TV:

I caught up with Old 97's frontman Rhett Miller at the record release party for his new self-titled album. And while everyone else was kissing his butt and fawning over his good looks, I had a more serious agenda -- although, I gotta say the album is good. Is that ass-kissing? I met with Rhett to test this guy's Pop Culture I.Q. Here's the test I gave him -- five questions about singer-songwriters. I'll give you 10. If you pass them all, you can go through the rest of your day confident in the knowledge that you're smarter than Rhett Miller. Honor System Instructions:1. Click on question for correct answer2. Keep your own score3. No checking Wikipedia or other reference sources4. Answers are also at the bottom1. Who wrote the Monkees' 1966 hit, "I'm a Believer"? a. Neil Youngb. Neil Sedakac. Neil...

Alt-country music arguably peaked in 1995, with the formation of Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks' Tomorrow the Green Grass, Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball, Old 97's Wreck Your Life, Steve Earle's Train a Comin', and the releases of the debut Wilco, Son Volt, and Buddy Miller albums. Don't look now, but that was almost a decade and a half ago. In the meantime, the genre, which once seemed to breathe fresh, new life into hoary country music, has gotten a little long in the tooth. Tastes have changed, and the audience, for the most part, has moved on. That's most evident in the demise of No Depression Magazine, which championed this music throughout its history, and which closed its doors a year ago. But don't write off the old warhorse just yet. Here are three new albums that hearken back to the days when the music was a thoroughbred. One of them...
