In addition to performing two songs as musical guest, Ariana Grande popped up in a couple sketches on the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, including one that poked fun at Moulin Rouge!
The sketch recreated scenes from the 2001 movie musical, with Grande portraying Nicole Kidman’s Satine and Bowen Yang as Ewan McGregor’s Christian. The original Baz Luhrmann film took contemporary pop songs, mashed them up, and placed them 1900 Paris. The SNL sketch also did that, but to the extreme, using Grande’s vocal talents to create ridiculous musical mash-ups.

Ariana Grande wasn’t just the musical guest during the March 9 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” While she took the stage to perform two songs from “Eternal Sunshine,” her just-released sixth album, “We Can’t Be Friends” and “Imperfect For You” — and was introduced by her mom, Joan Grande, for the second number — she also took on two different sketches.
After appearing as a patient in a group therapy session during the first half of the show, she was invited back to the stage later on in the night for a “Moulin Rouge” spoof, giving her the opportunity to sing covers of multiple hit songs.
The sketch created a PBS special, hosted by Mikey Day, taking a look at what the “Elephant Love Medley” would have looked like had director Baz Luhrmann known they’d be able to get the rights to other love songs; Bowen Yang and Grande played Christian and Satine,...

Widely considered one of the greatest remakes of a UK series of all time, American Idol, based on the Brits' Pop Idol, stormed to the top of the viewing charts when it first debuted on Fox in 2002. The series would then front the American portion of the reality TV movement of the noughties alongside a plethora of other competitions and MTV shows that, combined, crafted a golden age of television that proved real people might truly be the stars. By birthing multi-platinum-selling recording artists like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as many stars who didn't even win their season on the show, American Idol proved itself as, not just one of the best singing competitions on TV, but one of the hottest shows on TV full stop.

Since its first episode in 2002, American Idol has been a star maker. From Kelly Clarkson to Carrie Underwood, the singing competition is responsible for some major careers. Not only has Idol had its fair share of fruitful winners, but it was one of the first reality shows to prove that coming in first doesn't always mean you find the most success. Contestant Jennifer Hudson went on to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Dreamgirls; Adam Lambert is now the lead singer of the epic rock band, Queen; Tori Kelly, who was labeled by then-judge Simon Cowell as "annoying," and didn't make it far in the competition has won multiple Grammy Awards and is returning in Season 22 to be a mentor in the Hawaii episode, which is now a staple location on the show.

Derek Hough and his wife Hayley Erbert, who underwent an emergency craniectomy before Christmas, posted an update Monday on social media about her health.
Sitting with Hough in front of the camera, Erbert admitted she’s had both good days and bad after she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel. The couple, who were married in August, were performing their Symphony of Dance tour in December when she became disoriented and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
“I’m doing so much better every single day, so much progress every single day,” she said. “There was a moment in the hospital when I had just woken up from my first surgery and Derek was sitting at the bottom at bed, saying so many people were thinking about [her].”
“Through this experience this woman has been unbelievable,” Hough continued. “Her perseverance, her acceptance has been remarkable to witness firsthand.

The music business is all about the next big act, the next big performer. Who’s going to break out. Who’s going to be the next household name. The Grammys, over the years and to varying degrees of success, has delivered that prediction with its Best New Artist prize.
Starting with Bobby Darin in 1960, the award has been the harbinger of who’s going to be topping the music world … some of the time. Darin didn’t do too bad in his long music and acting career. In 1965, a little combo from the UK made the cut and The Beatles went on to become one of the greatest bands ever.
Some other highlights of the Best New Artist roster. In 1962, Peter Nero was the first jazz musician to win. Bobbie Gentry was the first woman to win in 1968. The Carpenters, Richard and Karen, was the first duo to win...

Gone are the days when American Idol produced superstars like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. The Voice seems to get more recognition for which coaches will be occupying the fabulous turning chairs. While reality singing competitions in America seem to ebb and flow, the juggernauts are not quite creating the next big thing in music. They're there to be there and fulfill a time slot. But if the shows go back and bring in a little edge from the judges and coaches, perhaps a megastar can be born again. The kid gloves need to come off, so the singers can understand that tough critiques are valid and viewers can feel validated that their opinions matter.

Like most singers new in town, Brittney Spencer spent the bulk of her first decade in Nashville paying dues. She busked to passersby, sang backup for Carrie Underwood, and carved out a space for provocative songwriting in the city’s Christian worship-music community. Then, in 2020, in the wake of country music’s reckoning with its long history of racial exclusion, Spencer uploaded a viral acoustic cover of the Highwomen’s “Crowded Table.” Since then, she’s opened for Willie Nelson and Megan Thee Stallion, sang at the CMAs, and even...

Hough and Erbert, who were married in August, were performing their Symphony of Dance tour earlier this month when she became disoriented and was rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required emergency surgery.

In a post on Instagram where he has been updating fans about his wife’s difficult journey, Hough on Monday wrote, “cherishing the greatest gift of all. The precious gift of life and the love we share. Hold your loved ones close and treasure every moment.”
