If you’ve ever found yourself thinking that Terrence Malick’s lyrical approach to filmmaking would be conducive to, say, a perfume commercial, your time has come. The director has helmed a commercial for Guerlain’s fragrance Mon Guerlain, with Angelina Jolie in the lead. Watch below, with thanks to the Film Stage.

Set to Andy Quin’s “Awakening,” which was also featured in the trailer for “To the Wonder,” the one-minute spot is exactly what you’d expect of a perfume commercial directed by the man responsible for “Days of Heaven,” “The Thin Red Line” and “The Tree of Life.” Balletic movements and cutaways to nature abound; if you include the female voice speaking “Mon Guerlain” at the end, there’s even narration.

It was precisely a month ago when we learned — along with premiering two new films this year — Terrence Malick was planning to direct a perfume commercial for Guerlain starring Angelina Jolie. As the new face of the French company’s campaign for their fragrance Mon Guerlain, Jolie is donating her entire paycheck to a charity of her choosing, and now they’ve kicked things off with the launch of the ad.
Backed by Andy Quin‘s gorgeous song “Awakening” — used previously by Malick in the trailer for To the Wonder — it’s a beautiful, one-minute commercial that features the director’s angelic imagery of nature, his star, and, of course, some perfume. As we await the forthcoming premiere of Song to Song, check out the spot below as well as the To the Wonder trailer to see his past use of the music.

Mexican director Carlos Reygadas (Japón, Silent Light) had critics divided with his latest, Post Tenebras Lux (the title is a Latin phrase meaning “after darkness, light”). Met with boos following its premiere at Cannes last year (although it went on to win the Best Director prize), Post Tenebras Lux represents the director’s attempt to make a personal work. This week we sit down and discuss its many unforgettable and ominous images. After we take time to also discuss Terence Malick’s beautiful, compassionate, tragic and transcendent To The Wonder – also booed at Cannes. Joining us this week is Sound On Sight contributor Zachary Lewis – also of In Review Online.
