- He once damaged the wing of an airplane by hitting a fence post while taxiing the airplane down a country road about a mile from the airport where he had just landed. He taxied back to the airport, taped the dents in the wing and then flew on to his destination.
- Graduated United States Marine Corp Boot Camp aboard Parris Island, SC (Platoon 242), in 1961...Qualified Expert Rifleman with the M-1. He spent one day in the Parris Island Brig after punching out another recruit, whom he says, "was asking for it." He later received a rare inter-service transfer from the USMC to a U.S. Army Officer Candidate Program and subsequently into the Georgia National Guard where he served as a Military Police Officer.
- Deeply moved by Sara Stein's book, Noah's Garden, he planted over 450 indigenous trees and shrubs on his 1/2 acre suburban lot, then turned his swimming pool into a pond, with fish, frogs, and turtles. He was aided in the subsequent fight with resistant neighbors, the HOA, the City, and County, by famed environmental attorney Jim Blackburn, of Houston, Texas. His neighbors have given him the moniker, "Jungle Jim," and seem to have accepted him, and his forest, which due to global climate change is now being threatened by drought.
- As one of the youngest Atlanta Police Officers (age 20) he graduated second in his academy class. At graduation he was required to give a one-minute speech and was so shy that even though his classmates cheered him on he almost bolted from the room.
- Grad school Psychology professor at Texas Women's University, where Schleyer was registered as both graduate Psychology student and upper-level nursing student, lured him into taking a "non-parametric" statistics course by telling him, "...there is a cute, smart, tiny, female student in the class". He signed up immediately, but found the course impossibly boring! She made an "A," and went on to become a Doctor. He made a "D," and went on to become an actor. They've been happily married since 1980. And yes...he did go on and earn a Master of Arts in Psychology.
- Dr. Milton Bocato, a well regarded psychiatrist in Brazil, is his half-brother. They grew up not knowing of each other's existence.
- He is a "voted member" of the American Psychological Association and holds a Master of Arts degree in Psychology.
- During the filming of 26 Mirror, to get into character, he spent the night sleeping on the set...
- In the movie Paradise Texas, he appears in several scenes with the love of his life, his wife of 32 years, Dr. Maryann Kelly.
- His first leading role (as Sam, the dying painter) in the film, 26 Mirror: Montage of Lives, premiered at Santiko's Mayan Palace Theater in San Antonio, Texas August 11, 2005...
- Schleyer often says that the journey to becoming a "working" actor is a lot like becoming a professional pilot - "The training cost a lot. You spend a lot of time working for little, or no pay. And who you know is very important." He holds the highest of all pilot licenses, an Airline Transport Certificate, with both single and multi-engine ratings. He is a Commercial Seaplane Pilot with both single and multi-engine ratings. He has flown thousands of hours as a Flight Instructor in single and multi-engine airplanes and has trained several hundred pilots, some of whom are now active airline pilots.
- Steve McQueen was the first person to tell him he should be an actor. This was during filming of The Sand Pebbles in 1966 aboard Battleship Texas. Schleyer was featured as a Botswain's Mate in the movie - and - he was also a reporter for the Houston Post sent to interview McQueen and director Robert Wise. This was Schleyer's first movie - and - it also was his first news story as a reporter. Sadly, his scenes were cut, and his news story did not run. Interestingly, McQueen, a brother Marine, belonged to the same Marine unit aboard Camp LeJeune.
- Dan Haggerty suggested that he should become an actor. They met as a result of a charter flight which Schleyer had piloted.
- During the filming of Paradise Texas he met Brandon Smith who introduced him to Connie Cooper, who became a mentor.
- Has been employed as, among other things: electric motor mechanic, plumber's apprentice, laborer, millwright, grocery produce manager, grocery stocker, chicken ranch worker, farmer, longshoreman, long shore-checker, newspaper reporter, salesman, mechanic, U.S. Marine, U. - Turned down the role of Boris in the Greg Carter film A Gang Land Love Story (formerly Elbows and Vogues) because of a pay dispute. His friend Brandon Smith (No Time For Old Men) replaced him.
