Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

[This story contains spoilers from the season two finale of The Gilded Age.]
In HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age, the character of Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) offers a solitary glimpse into the life of the Black upper class in New York City in the 1880s. Yet in season two, that contextual lens is expanded when the secretary and aspiring journalist, just one generation removed from slavery, ventures to the South and witnesses both the progressive educational strides made by and for African Americans at the dawn of the establishment of historically Black colleges and universities, as well as the social prejudices that threaten their existence.
“Peggy gets to explore so many different textures of the Black world this season, from going to Tuskegee, to meeting Sarah Garnet and seeing the community organizing that was happening during that time, and getting to see a Black social gathering for the fireworks at the Brooklyn Bridge, which was one of the first in the series,...

This article contains spoilers for The Gilded Age season 2 episode 5.
The Gilded Age has woven the story of Black New Yorkers into the larger fabric of its depiction of 1880’s society. Season 2 expands on this foundation by also showing a slice of what life was like in the South during the same period.
Peggy (Denée Benton) is very eager to cover the most important stories of the day for T. Thomas Fortune’s (Sullivan Jones) newspaper. Covering the Red Cross’s relief work last season has also whet her appetite for traveling beyond the city. During season 2 the opportunity to cover a big and meaningful story presents itself when Booker T. Washington offers Peggy and Fortune the opportunity to cover the opening of a new dormitory at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
The Tuskegee Institute, now called Tuskegee University, was founded in 1881 just two years before the main plot of the series begins.

Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” delves deeper into the steel strikers and railroad labor unions that loomed in Season 1 — a storyline that parallels the recent entertainment industry strikes, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield says.
On Sunday episode, railroad magnate George Russell (Morgan Spector) met with the captain of a labor union Mr. Henderson (Darren Goldstein) in an attempt to quell the rising tensions from the many men he employed to construct the life-changing railroads that made him rich. There’s also a new cast of guest stars and supporting characters creating tension for our established characters.
Season one left off with George Russell (Morgan Spector) successfully avoiding financial ruin because of the railroad accident. This season, George’s employees are growing frustrated with working long hours in the steel mills while George is concerned that the possibilities of strikes and boycotts will cost him his own livelihood and those who depend on his railroad company for theirs.
Season two continues the ensemble format established in season one by centering the storylines of the Van Rhijins and Russells plus the stories of their respective household members. Peggy Scott’s plotline takes a deeper look into African-American society beyond the city. There’s also a new cast of guest stars and supporting characters creating tension for our established characters.

“The Gilded Age” is back for a second season, moving to the coveted Sunday night slot on HBO and Max. Creator and co-showrunner Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”) worked with co-showrunner Sonja Warfield to bring the American period drama to life, incorporating historical accuracy with the help of Dr. Erica Dunbar. Directors included Michael Engler, Salli Richardson Whitfield and Deborah Kampmeier.
Season 1 left off with the threat of an opera house battle — not one involving troops and guns, but socialites and wealth. “The Gilded Age” was peppered with historical events and landmarks, including the introduction of electricity by Thomas Edison, and the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The hand of the Statue of Liberty that holds the torch, which was delivered before the rest of the statue from France, served as a date spot, and Clara Barton and the American Red Cross made an important appearance. Fellowes also injected servant-class stories into the ensemble cast,...

Nothing stays the same forever — not even on a show from Julian Fellowes, the creator best known for the comforting (and occasionally chaotic) vibes of “Downton Abbey.”
Fellowes’ latest HBO drama, “The Gilded Age,” returns soon for its second season — another installment full of lavish costumes, clashes of new and old ideology, and Carrie Coon waging psychological warfare on an impervious Christine Baranski. That’s right, Bertha Russell (Coon) and Agnes Van Rhijn (Baranski) are still at it in Season 2, the former while she pushes New York toward the urban, modern, and industrial; the latter by gatekeeping from her tea room and insisting that her niece Marian (Louisa Jacobson) focus on getting married — and ostensibly feeling less enthused when Agnes’ sister Ada (Cynthia Nixon) appears to be finding love. The trailer uses words like “fighter,” “battle,” and “war,” leaving no ambiguity as to what exactly is going on between these...

Things will heat up in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” Season 2, and not just on the railroads.
As Ward McAllister (Nathan Lane) escorts Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) to some sort of social event, his voiceover reminds viewers that Bertha has almost everything she could ever want.
“Mrs. Russell, you conquered New York,” Lane’s McAllister says at the beginning of the clip released by Max Wednesday morning. “You dine in the best houses. But are you sure it’s wise to start the war with New York society? Aren’t you asking for trouble?”
“Yes, and you’ll need to pick a team,” Coon’s Russell responds. “Head-to-head and one will be the winner.”

“I got interested in the Gilded Age a long time before I was thinking of it in terms of a TV show,” shares “The Gilded Age” creator, writer and executive producer Julian Fellowes. The HBO drama series is set in 1882 and explores the contest between “old money” New York, represented by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon’s characters, and the nouveau riche, portrayed by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector. The writer explains that what fascinates him most about this period of American history is the “development of this country turning into a world power, or at least recognizing that it was already a world power.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Gilded Age” had a very long development period, beginning many years ago at NBC before moving to its home on HBO. During that time, Fellowes noticed in the history he read that these post-Civil War years were “very much dominated by women.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of “The Gilded Age,” which premiered on HBO on March 21 and is now available to stream on HBO Max.
At last.
After all of the scheming and manipulating, the leveraging of favors and fortune, Bertha Russell has her ball. And it’s a complete and total triumph with Mrs. Caroline Astor (Donna Murphy), the social doyenne that Bertha (Carrie Coon) has spent the bulk of “The Gilded Age’s” nine-episode season attempting to win over, not only attending, but bringing along the other members of the social hierarchy.
It’s the result of a risky bet by Bertha that making Mrs. Astor’s attendance contingent on her daughter Carrie (Amy Forsyth) being allowed to perform at the costume ball would pay off in the kind of visit that seemed so out of reach when we first met the Russells at the beginning of the show.

Denée Benton isn’t one to be silenced. The Tony-nominated actress shared an early experience when she was cast in the lead role of Natasha Rostova in the Broadway show “Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812.”
“I had tweeted something about Malcolm X and one of the producers gave me this whole spiel about not burning bridges and how there would be a lot of people who are rooting for me to fail,” Benton said. “It was essentially ‘little Black girl shut up and be grateful.’ It’s 2016, I’m playing this Russian countess, and in your mind, I should be kissing your feet. It has nothing to do with my skill. The fact that my parents paid for my expensive education, but in your mind, I should be thankful for whatever scraps.”
That passion and fire would take Benton far in her career. She would move on to star in another Broadway behemoth,...

Julian Fellowes knows exactly what viewers will nickname his new period drama, The Gilded Age, set among the super-rich and their servants in late 19th Century New York City. “People will call this ‘the American Downton Abbey,’” says Fellowes. But Fellowes goes on to point out there are distinct differences: The Gilded Age is set about 30 years earlier, and instead of focusing on a British aristocracy in decline, it tackles ambitious Americans on the rise. Plus, Fellowes has a co-writer, Sonja Warfield, who brings a fresh, young sensibility. “Some of these stories are drawn from my life, which might surprise people,” says Warfield, who was a Black debutante. Parts of the drama take place in Brooklyn, where successful Black families live in wealth and luxury, completely separately from their white counterparts in Manhattan. Check out this video to hear more from Fellowes and Warfield about how they joined creative forces...
